It is very difficult to find a more delicate and colorful, abundantly flowering plant than a lavatera. At least from among the annuals. Pure and delicate pinks look dazzling. Hundreds of quivering funnel flowers densely cover the top of the shoots and seem to float in the air, creating charming accents. Lavatera makes any ensemble more elegant and magnificent. And requires nothing but modest care. This is a true worshiper of the sun, requiring good soil. She cannot grow anywhere. But there is a place for a lavater in every garden.

Description of the plant

Lavatera, hatyma or wild rose has earned its special status in the Malvaceae family. It is a delicate but large seasonal accent with dark leaves and very abundant flowering from mid-summer to fall.

The height of the lavater directly depends on the conditions and type. Among them there are compact plants 60 cm high and giants up to 1.5 m in height. But lavaters are always magnificent. Shoots woody at the base, straight, not stable enough. Bushes often fall apart over time and need support (or very careful selection of a place) to maintain their "shape".

The leaves of the lavatera are alternate, large, three- or five-lobed, below the shoots are cordate or rounded, delicate in texture, with coarse-toothed edges. Unusual star-shaped hairs that give a matte effect of rich greenery can only be seen through a magnifying glass.

Large funnel-shaped flowers of the lavater, up to 12 cm in diameter, seem delicate and quivering due to the special wrinkled texture of five thin petals. They bloom one at a time in the leaf axils or in the racemes at the ends of the shoots. The cup only emphasizes the tenderness of the corolla.

The flowering period of garden lavaters starts in the middle of summer, and does not subside until the end of autumn or the first frosts. When grown through seedlings, flowering starts earlier but ends quickly.

Lavater's color scheme is limited to white and pink variations. Exemplary nostalgic and romantic shades of pink watercolors, dazzling candy or pale pastels accentuate the finest dark veins.

Types and varieties of lavatera

The gardens are mainly decorated with varieties of three-month annual lavater. But the perennial rival of the seasonal favorite is also attracting more and more attention.

Three-month Lavatera (Lavatera trimestris) is a lush annual up to 1.2 m in height with dark, large leaves and an abundance of funnel-shaped white or pink flowers. Varieties are dwarf, about 40 cm in height (more suitable for borders and containers), medium-sized and dense or high (from 1 m). Mixed varieties and varieties are often sold without a name at all or with a color mark - "multicolored lavatera", "pink lavatera", "white lavatera".

But there are also special plants-legends:

  • miniature watercolor purple-pink variety "Novella» (Novella The);
  • half-meter densely branched, dark pink variety "Mont Rose";

Thuringian Lavatera (Lavatera thuringiaca) is the only perennial species also known as the dog rose. It is a bushy plant with straight shoots, large grayish leaves and single pink flowers up to 10 cm in diameter.

She also has a lot of interesting hybrid varieties, which are sometimes marked in the catalog as lavatera Clement (Lavatera x clementii):

  • sprawling, bright crimson "Brandon Springs" (Bredon Springs);
  • white, graceful, with pointed petals and a crimson brushstroke in the throat of "Barnsley Baby" (Barnsley Baby);
  • pale lilac, with thin purple veins and almost flat flowers " Lilac Lady";
  • dark raspberry hybrid with narrow petals "Burgundy Wine";
  • pale pink variety with a dark throat and veins " Eye Catcher".

Using Lavater in Garden Design

Despite the status of a conditionally cut plant and the talent not to wither in bouquets for more than a week, the most spectacular thing in the Lavater is the relentless flowering throughout the second half of the season. Even perennial lavaters should be considered as a seasonal accent for decorating the garden with ornate blooming spots from July.

It is better to plant Lavater in mixed plantings, to introduce where there is not enough volume and lush flowers. But not necessarily: perennial and tall lavaters look good as a group on the lawn, especially when using decorative garter options.

Lavatera can be grown in summer beds, or it can be introduced into all types of flower beds with perennials, as a long blooming accent, or to fill voids. It perfectly masks the foundations of fences and buildings, it is suitable for creating dividing strips and curbs that cover imperfections.

It is easy to find partners for the Lavatera: it looks good in the company of any summer party, including verbena, scented tobacco, asters, nasturtium, cosme, marigolds and perennials - from sage and delphinium, lavender and catnip, veronica and chrysanthemums to irises and roses.

Conditions comfortable for a plant in the garden

Lavater's ability to grow well on any good quality “medium” soil is surprising. Despite the clear preference for loose, light, breathable and medium-fertile soils, the lavater will take root in any well-developed, lightweight and not moist soil. Before planting, the soil can be improved with at least a small addition of mature compost or humus. But you should not overdo it: on too fertilized soil, lavaters grow vigorously, bloom and stretch worse.

Lavatera is capable of growing and even blooming in partial shade. The stronger the shading, the more the plants stretch and fall apart and the worse they bloom. If possible, it is better to use the lavater to decorate sunny or absent-mindedly bright areas with at least several hours of direct sun a day.

When choosing a place, it is worth remembering that the bushes fall apart under showers and in the wind. And the more protected the site, the more beautiful the lavater will keep, and the less need for a garter.

Lavater care in the garden

The ability to bloom colorfully, profusely and for a long time with minimal maintenance makes the lavater one of the most reliable candidates among the large annuals. Its drought resistance makes it possible to carry out rare maintenance watering only in severe drought (and even then not more often than once a week).

Top dressing for the Lavater is needed only on very poor soils, 1-2 dressings with complex mineral fertilizers are enough, one of which must be adjusted to the budding stage.

Lavatera loves mulching. If a protective layer is not created, one must not forget about weeding of weeds and periodic loosening of the soil.

In addition to watering, in fact, the only truly obligatory care item for a lavater is the garter. At the first sign of collapse of tall bushes, you need to immediately install a support.

Pruning off blooming shoots is a simple measure to stimulate more flowering waves. And you should not neglect it, because this is how the lavaters continue to bloom until frost.

Lavaters often suffer from rust and aphids, when they appear in the garden, you should immediately start preventive treatments. For the lavater, it is better not to hesitate with these measures, the removal of affected plants can be avoided if the treatment is quickly carried out with fungicides and insecticides.

Breeding Lavater

Lavaters are grown from seeds. They can be sown sparsely on separate seedling ridges, in greenhouses or right in a permanent place, before winter or from April to mid-May, in well-shed soil to a depth of 8-10 cm. It is better to cover the crops with foil. Sowing directly into the soil gives a longer flowering, only for the sake of an early start they prefer sowing for seedlings.

Sowing seeds for seedlings is carried out in individual containers or shallow general containers throughout March. For the lavater, only a light substrate and a superficial sparse sowing after preliminary moistening of the soil are suitable. Crops are kept under film or glass until the first signs of growth appear.

Seedlings are planted at a distance of 25-35 cm. When sowing in a permanent place, the seedlings are thinned out at the same distance.
