Saman is a building material made of clay soil with the addition of straw, dried in the open air. Adobe is still a practical building material, although there are many other more durable building materials such as cinder blocks and foam blocks. Why do people today use adobe for building buildings? There are two main reasons for this: cheap and warm.

Adobe components

Clay is a natural material and therefore can always be found in abundance. Well, another component of adobe is straw, which is also a natural material, and it can be purchased in any quantity. Straw provides thermal insulation to the building. So it turns out - cheap and warm.

As before, you can buy adobe now. But if there is an opportunity to make it yourself, then for this you need to know a simple technology.

Preparatory work and mixture preparation

First you need to prepare the site on which the adobe will be made. It is necessary to clear the place from debris and stones, to level rough irregularities (bumps, holes).

Now you need to bring clay to this site and scatter it into a layer of 30-35 cm in the form of a circle. In the center, make a depression in order to pour water into it.

When this process is complete, the clay should be soaked. This is done simply - with an ordinary garden hose. During the soaking process, the main thing is to ensure that the water does not wash out the edges of the batch. The clay should be soaked well enough to the very edges of the embankment.

When this process is complete, you need to knead the clay. Small mixtures are kneaded with feet, but if the batch is for several thousand adobe, then external force is used. Previously, large batches were kneaded with horses. Currently - a tractor. As a result, the clay should be mixed to the state of "thick sour cream". Who will do it in what way is a personal matter.

Having finished this work, now you should proceed to the next step - mixing straw into the clay. Spread the straw in a thin layer throughout the batch and mix. This process must be done several times, until the mixture ceases to stick to the feet. It should also be noted that with each subsequent addition of straw, it should be sprayed with water so that the batch does not become thick. A thick batch does not mix well.

Making adobe

Having completed the manufacture of the mixture, we proceed to the manufacture of adobe. Special forms are needed for manufacturing. Usually wooden ones are used. Forms can be ordered from a carpenter or you can buy ready-made ones.

Making adobe is laborious and hard work. But if the adobe is done for oneself, then it is worth it. The adobe in which there is a lot of straw is considered to be of high quality. Such adobe will be lightweight, durable, with poor thermal conductivity.

To make the adobe itself, next to the batch, the area is sprinkled with straw, on which adobe will be laid out. Forms are placed on the ground in a row (if there are several of them) and the mixture is laid in them. At the same time, the molds must be wet so that they can be easily removed from the finished adobe and do not crinkle it.

Before each new filling of the mixture, the mold inside must be moistened. This can be done with a damp cloth or sponge. Having laid one row, we move on to the next, so that the mold handle is 5 cm from the finished row. Since the batch will decrease, the rows should be laid towards the batch. Do not forget to scatter straw in place of the future row first so that the adobe does not stick to the ground.

You can put the mixture into molds with ordinary pitchforks, but it will be better if these are vegetable pitchforks. In the filled form, the mixture must be tamped well, and the surface should be smoothed flush with the edges. There should be no emptiness inside adobe. Saman with voids will be fragile.

When all the work is finished, you need to pay attention to the weather. If rain is expected, then the adobe should be covered with straw so that it does not wash out. In good sunny weather, adobe dries up to 10 days. After that, it can be used in construction.
