August received many popular names - Serpen, Stubble, Gustar, Zornik. He is the border between summer and coming autumn. And although the hot sun still pampers, the summer heat is gradually subsiding. The days are getting shorter, the nights are longer, and the water is colder. There are frequent and prolonged rains without lightning and thunder. The dark night sky is strewn with stars, lightning often blazes - the farewell reflections of the July thunderstorms. In the European part of Russia, by mid-August, aftermath will grow in the meadows - "second hay". At the same time, cold matinees and the first night frosts make themselves felt.

August was popularly called hospitable. The harvest is in full swing. Gradually, the birds that gather for the winter stop singing. The first to fly away are cuckoos and flocks of swifts, followed by swallows. Wild animals are also beginning to prepare for winter: foxes, for example, change their summer dark "clothes" for winter - red. At the end of August, cranes gather on a long journey.

The last month of summer has come. An amateur gardener, as a zealous owner, increasingly thinks about the approaching autumn and draws up a plan for caring for crops, taking into account the impending cold weather, aging of plants, the family's need for storing vitamin products for the winter.

At the beginning of the month, they begin to harvest the garlic. It is impossible to delay the harvesting process, otherwise the shell (shirt) on the bulb will begin to disperse and crumble into separate teeth, which are poorly stored and lose their presentation. Onions and spring garlic varieties, when ripe, soften the neck and lodge the feather. This serves as a signal to start harvesting plants. Do not cut off the tops and roots of dug plants, but put them in boxes, in one layer under a canopy. From the leaves, all the nutrients will gradually pass into the bulb, and it will increase in size. The feather is removed only after it is completely dry.

If the weather is sunny, then the harvested onions can be left right on the ridge for several days, and then after the tops have dried, they are cut off and the bulbs are dried in the sun.

Try to remove zucchini and squash in the green phase, that is, when the peel on the fruit is still quite soft. Then the fruits can be whole pickled and processed.

Some of the fruits can be left until fully ripe for seeds and for winter consumption.

Pumpkins must be removed to a warm room before frost, otherwise they will be poorly stored.

In the area with rooted cuttings of black currant, the soil is loosened and weeds are removed, on the plantings of actinidia and lemongrass, weeding, loosening, watering in dry weather, cutting off excess shoots.

To extend the strawberry season to August and early September, it is necessary to install tunnel-type film shelters over the remontant strawberry bushes. The soil should be loosened often, the plants should be fed and watered abundantly. Partial removal of leaves from strawberries is permissible only on thickened plantings to air the plantation and increase the illumination of the berries.

The first treatment must be carried out at the beginning of the month and then repeated after 10-14 days or after each heavy rain. The defeat of late blight can be weakened if the plantings are covered with a film before the spread of the disease. A harbinger of the appearance of the disease on tomatoes is the defeat (blackening and browning) of the tops of potatoes. In just a few days, the infection spreads to tomato plants. Don't miss a moment for processing! Bordeaux liquid does not penetrate into the fetus through the shell and does not pose a danger to humans.

Trapping belts are examined daily, pests nesting in them are collected and destroyed.

With a strong development of coccomycosis, the crown of cherry trees and fallen leaves are sprayed with a 4% urea solution after harvesting the fruits. When aphids appear on young plants, they are treated with karbofos (7 g per 10 l of water). The same drug is effective against spider mites on black currants and raspberries. You can recommend processing with actellik (200 g per 10 l).

Raspberries with signs of anthracnose and purple spotting are sprayed with cuprozan (400 g per 10 l) or a 1% solution of Bordeaux liquid.

In dry weather, weeds are removed in the near-trunk circles of fruit crops and on berry fields, the soil is loosened and watering is carried out.

The collection of plums, cherries, early varieties of apples and pears begins. Carrion is collected daily. In order for more apples damaged by pests (moth and sawfly) and diseases to fall off, the branches on mature trees are slightly shaken. It is better to pick pear fruits a little unripe. Six days after harvest, they are ready to eat.

In dry weather, fruit trees, especially in a productive year, require abundant watering

When forming the crown of young trees, branches should not be allowed to grow in an arbitrary direction. Use twine to bend them or move them to the side so that the branches use the entire volume of the crown.

In the first decade, budding of stone fruit and pears ends, and they move on to the apple tree. Pome crops are most often inoculated in a T-shaped way. Good results are obtained by budding in the butt method. A cut in the form of a tongue about 3 cm long is made on the rootstock, it is shortened by two-thirds. Cut off the shield with the bud from the graft of the grafted variety and insert it under the tongue so that the edge of the shield coincides with the cut of the bark on the rootstock. The place of budding is tied with foil or insulating tape.

After three to four weeks, an audit is made: if the petioles turn yellow and fall off with light contact, then the vaccinations were successful; if they dry up and do not crumble, the eyes did not take root. A month after budding, the harness is removed.

After collecting red, white and black raspberries, they begin to cut out the fruit-bearing branches. Among the berry crops, the most productive are selected, which can then be propagated.

Dried and diseased branches are cut out in the crowns of trees and shrubs. From trees, mushrooms are removed from the surface of the bark, the influx of gum (juice) from plums and cherries is cut off. The wounds must be covered with pitch, and the cut fruit bodies of the mushrooms must be burned.

The growths of the current year, which are actively growing in plum, pear, apple and black currant, must be pinched. On an apple tree, this work is done only on grafts, the growth of which exceeds 80-100 cm.

They begin to transplant seedlings of biennial flowers to a permanent place. The place and density of planting depend on the purpose of growing and the type of plant. Bells and carnations are immediately planted according to the 30 × 30 cm or 25 × 25 cm scheme, and forget-me-nots and pansies can be transplanted during flowering, so now they can be planted more densely - 15 × 10 cm.

It is necessary to prepare new beds for tulips, as they do not really like to "live" in one place. Tulips need a fertile and carefully prepared soil with a neutral or slightly alkaline reaction, therefore lime (50 t / u2) and superphosphate (80 g / m2) are scattered on the beds before digging, and after planting potassium fertilizer (60-80 g / m2) is applied.

Prepare a fruit storage (repair, disinfection and long-term ventilation). Prepare and repair containers for storage and storage of fruits.

It is necessary to put in order drainage ditches, remove young shrubs, cut down the grass.

At your site, repair old drains, build new ones - open and closed.

Ridges are being prepared for a new strawberry plantation. To do this, add 4 kg of old compost and two buckets of peat per 1 m2, dig in, remove the roots of weeds, after leveling the surface with a rake, the soil must be well watered. After seven to ten days, start planting seedlings.

On wet soils, they are planted in rows every 15-18 cm, when planting in two rows, they are planted in a staggered manner. Solar drying of apples, pears, cherries and plums is continued.

The compost of the last year is passed through a screen: large, non-rotten fractions of the compost mass are placed in a heap of new compost.

At this time, it is necessary to protect the rowan harvest from thrushes. They are scared off with ratchets and blows on metal objects.

When picking cucumbers, remove all ugly and overgrown fruits from the plants, since they delay the formation of healthy fruits.
