"Prepare the sleigh from the summer …" - a saying that every gardener should be guided by. And all because in winter our gardens have a hard time - frosts mercilessly affect the shoots of tree crops, thereby causing serious damage to the future harvest.

But if you know what the resistance of trees and shrubs to low temperatures is and, based on this knowledge, take good care of the garden, large losses can be avoided, and along with them, and spring frustration. Let's take a look at how to help your garden survive the winter frosts.

What is frost resistance is clear to everyone: it is the ability of plants to withstand low temperatures, below 0 ° C, for a fairly long period of time. It depends on several factors: first of all, on the varietal characteristics of the culture, and secondly, on the degree of ripening of the wood. And if it is impossible to influence the varietal characteristics, then the ripening process can well be facilitated.

Ripening of wood is one of the phases of the growing season of woody plants, which occurs with a decrease in daylight hours, a decrease in moisture entering the root zone and an increase in the amplitude of day and night temperatures.

It consists in covering the cell membranes with lignin "F" and then "M" (as a result of which the shoots acquire strength and flexibility), a decrease in the content of free water in plant tissues, corking of the integument, structural changes in the protoplasm of tissues and the accumulation of nutrients. Ripening continues until the very end of the growing season and has the goal of preparing the plants for wintering.

If, for some reason, the combination of factors influencing this process is disturbed (cold summer, large amount of precipitation in the second half of it, a sharp cold snap), the winter hardiness of woody crops drops significantly and can lead to serious damage.

It is possible to determine the readiness of plants for winter by the color of the growth bark, the appearance of the buds, fragility and flexibility of the shoots. Ripe shoots have a straw-brown color, well-formed apical buds (the bud is clearly expressed, has distinguishable covering scales), break when bent.

If such branches are cut off, then a clear boundary between wood and cambium will be distinguished on the cut - in frost-resistant varieties, in non-frost-resistant plants there will be no such boundary - they go into hibernation with an unfinished process of wood differentiation and therefore are more sensitive to frost.

The ripening of wood continues in different cultures in different ways - in some until the very cold, in others, frost-resistant varieties, it can end in August. Moreover, the earlier the growth of shoots stops, the more fully they ripen.

How to influence the aging of wood

As noted above, a number of factors contribute to the maturation of wood at once, and one of them is a lack of moisture in combination with high temperatures. In such conditions, plants mainly fall in the second half of summer, and therefore, if your garden has artificial irrigation, watering in late July - early August should be significantly reduced, carefully looking closely, unless only annual trees - they need to be watered in the heat as needs.

The second factor is top dressing. Based on the fact that the presence of nitrogen in fertilizers provokes plants to grow - from the second half of the summer, it is recommended to fertilize with only phosphorus-potassium fertilizers. Phosphorus has an effect on enhancing the formation of fruit organs of trees and shrubs, which means the formation of the next year's harvest, potassium - increases their winter hardiness.

Suitable for use: superphosphate, sulfuric potassium, potassium magnesium, potassium phosphate, wood ash. It is better not to use chlorine-containing fertilizers, since some crops, in particular berry crops, react to chlorine by dropping foliage.

The third factor is pruning. In order not to prevent woody plants from entering the winter cold season prepared, starting from the middle of summer it is impossible to carry out unjustified pruning that can provoke a second wave of shoot growth.

And finally, pinching, or pinching. This event should be carried out where other techniques did not work, for example, due to atypical weather conditions for the zone, and the plants did not stop growing in time. Removing the tops of the shoots in this case switches them to ripening of fruits, development of the root system and the formation (maturation) of wood.


Scientists have noticed that different parts of plants have different resistance to frost. Leaf buds and annual shoots tolerate low temperatures better than buds located on pods, ringlets and fruit twigs. The trunk is more hardy in relation to the root system. The flowers are more resistant than the ovary. A rare crown copes better with cold weather than a heavily thickened crown. The most sensitive area of ​​trees is the base of the trunk and the branches of the skeletal branches.
