It is difficult to imagine a garden without an amazing ornamental plant - nasturtium. Delicate green leaves and splashes of bright orange, red, cherry or yellow flowers are unlikely to leave anyone indifferent. And if we add to this the amazing simplicity, long flowering, ease of growing and care … In general, the question is "to grow or not?" usually not worth it - nasturtium be in our gardens!

Among more than 90 different species of the genus nasturtium (Tropaeolum) there are annuals and perennials, growing vertically on supports, creeping along the ground, ampelous species (such as Lobb's nasturtium and shield-bearing). In the middle lane, nasturtium is cultivated, alas, only as an annual, because it does not tolerate frost. Despite the abundance and diversity of species, the most popular is the one-year cultivated nasturtium, which combines hybrids of shield-bearing nasturtium (T. peltophorum) and large (T. majus) and is a dwarf compact (20-40 cm) and climbing (shoot length up to 3 m) plants.

Let's find out how to make the life of this wonderful plant in the garden the most comfortable. Nasturtium is not particularly demanding on soils, prefers moderately fertilized, does not at all tolerate both strong waterlogging and drying out of the earth. You can plant it with seedlings, or you can sow seeds directly into the ground. With the seedling method, seeds are usually sown in April in peat pots (2-3 pcs.). Picking and feeding are not required.

Seedlings are planted in a permanent place when the threat of frost has passed, in late May - early June. The plant does not tolerate transplanting well, so when planting you need to try not to damage the root system. Sowing nasturtium in the ground, preferably in a sunny and sheltered place from cold winds, is carried out in mid - late May. The sowing scheme depends on the selected species and variety. Try not to bury the seeds too much in the soil - it is difficult for fragile sprouts to break through the thick layer of earth.

In June, to stimulate the growth of shoots, plants can be fed with complex fertilizers with a predominance of nitrogen in them. But do not overdo it - on fertilized soil, nasturtium grows strongly to the detriment of flowering. That's all! Now it remains to wait for the first flowers (flowering usually occurs 40-50 days after germination). And what they will be, depends only on you, because the choice of varieties is very diverse - there are curly, ampelous, compact, designed for containers. We list only the most famous and common ones:

  • Variety 'Goldglanz' ("Goldglyants") - golden semi-double flowers, shoots up to 3 m long;
  • Variety 'Royal Cloak' - nasturtium with very decorative foliage, flowers are yellow, orange, red, shoots up to 2 m long, used as a climbing, ampelous or ground cover plant;
  • Variety 'Alaska Salmon Orange' ("Alaska Salmon Orange") - compact bush (up to 40 cm), variegated, perfect for borders and ridges;
  • Variety 'Peach Melba' - a unique variety with cream flowers, suitable for planting in curbs;
  • Variety 'Golden Globe' (Golden Globe) - a compact bush with an abundance of double and semi-double golden yellow flowers;
  • Variety 'Moon Light' ("Moon Light") - flowers are pale yellow, shoots up to 2 m long;
  • Cultivar 'Kaiserin von Indien' ("Kaiserin von Indien") is a spherical compact bush with dark red flowers.

Lovers of exoticism can be advised to plant foreign nasturtium (T. peregrinum), which grows up to 3.5-4 m long and very quickly braids trellises, pergolas and arbors. With its help, you can decorate an unsightly corner of the garden and enjoy the result until the very frost. The flowers of the foreign nasturtium are much smaller (about 2-3 cm in diameter) than those of the cultivated one, but their abundance and rich canary yellow color completely smooth out this deficiency. Foreign nasturtium looks very beautiful in plantings with blue petunias or morning glories - you can't take your eyes off!

With the onset of autumn, seeds of the size of a large pea ripen on nasturtium. The maturity of seeds is very simple to determine. If, when touched, they are easily separated from each other and from the plant itself, then it is time to "harvest". Nasturtium seeds remain viable for 3-5 years. They are best stored in linen bags at room temperature. In this case, you will be sure that next season this plant will decorate your garden and vegetable garden. Garden? Yes, because planting nasturtium in the garden will protect your vegetables from many pests, because it is a repellent plant (repellent), its smell does not like rodents, aphids, the Colorado potato beetle, whitefly and cabbage caterpillars.

By planting nasturtium among vegetables, you, of course, will not completely get rid of these pests, but you will significantly reduce their number. Nasturtium is also planted to protect against nematodes, as well as against viral and fungal diseases of vegetables, potato late blight. Interestingly, the proximity of nasturtium on the same bed, for example, with radishes, will give it a sharper and spicy mustard taste. This flower gets along well with potatoes, beans, beans, cabbage, peas, radishes. But together with parsley it is better not to plant it. Do not forget about decorativeness - nasturtium can turn your beds into beautiful flower beds, which you will never get tired of admiring.

In folk medicine, the healing properties of nasturtium have long been known, in its homeland, in South America, this flower is used for many diseases. Nasturtium is also used by cosmetologists, tincture from its leaves helps to cope with some skin diseases, acne and boils, and also strengthens the hair and returns it the lost shine.

The presence of nasturtium in the kitchen is also quite justified, because it is not only beautiful, healthy, but also tasty. For example, in England they like to add it to salads, in Germany it is used in the preparation of vinegar and various seasonings. Spicy nasturtium and red currant seasoning

Cut the leaves and flowers as small as possible, mix well with mashed red currant berries, add finely grated garlic and vegetable oil (to taste). Nasturtium, currant and garlic are taken in equal parts. Store this seasoning in a cool place

Pickled nasturtium (capers)

Very often in cookbooks you can find the words: "Add capers". Not everyone knows what it is. Capers are pickled buds and fruits of caper plants growing in the south. When added to food, the dish acquires a sour-spicy taste. Our best substitute for capers can be pickled nasturtium, which is very simple to prepare. For pickling, only unripe seeds and buds are harvested. They should be washed, dried, put in sterilized glass jars, filled with hot marinade (prepared in the same way as for cucumbers) and closed tightly. Store in a cool place. Use as a seasoning for meat and fish dishes, add to hodgepodge and soups

Nasturtium vinegar

Put a handful of flowers in a glass opaque jar and pour a glass of 9% table vinegar. After 3-4 weeks strain the infusion and pour into a bottle. The vinegar will acquire an unusual aroma and a pleasant bronze color. It is used as a salad dressing
