1. Catharanthus pink
The indoor plant, which is known to many gardeners as the pink periwinkle, captivates with its fabulous flowering and amazing simplicity. A very beautiful and spectacular, flowering miracle of the catharanthus can reveal the fact how inimitable plants with the simplest and most unassuming flowers can really be.
The flowering of the pink catharanthus (Catharanthus roseus) continues, although not the whole year, but lasts long enough. From May to October, simple and very beautiful flowers bloom tirelessly on the bushes.
Five-lobed, large, with a small contrasting eye, which forms spots at the base of the petals of the catharanthus, they at the same time resemble the more familiar periwinkle, and at the same time they are radically different from it.
The palette of colors of pink catharanthus includes very original options and bright acrylic tones of orange, red, pink, purple. In modern varieties, you can often observe a two-tone color and a contrasting center of the flower. The most beloved and "visiting" color of the catharanthus is still considered to be salmon-orange, with a unique shade that cannot be called anything other than tasty.
The plant itself is compact and beautiful. At a height of 15 to 30 cm, catharanthus create cushion-shaped, dense bushes of erect shoots and lanceolate-oval leaves large enough for such a crumb. Glossy, with a light central vein, classic shape with a solid edge, they look very elegant and harmonize perfectly with flowering.
The strategy for growing catharanthus is selected in accordance with the desire to achieve the most abundant and long-lasting flowering. A tiny plant is so depleted in almost six months of its flowering that it can bloom again even if the bushes are preserved, it is much less effective.
In a catharanthus, it is almost impossible to achieve several waves of flowering at home, therefore this plant is most often grown as an annual, simply throwing away after the last flowers have faded. The simplicity of reproduction makes it easy to renew the bushes and replace them with new ones, so growing as an indoor summer is the best option.
In order to admire the flowering of the catharanthus, you will have to create complex, but not entirely tropical conditions for it: rather, a comfortable environment for the catharanthus can be called close to the requirements of any evergreen shrub or tree. These compact plants need not only good lighting, but also high humidity. At the same time, catharanthus cannot stand direct sunlight, but bloom much less abundantly in light shade. Temperatures for them, fortunately, are quite typical for rooms (the most comfortable range is from 15 to 20 degrees). In hot weather, plants become more sensitive to changes in air humidity. In summer, the catharanthus does not give up at all a place in the fresh air on a balcony, terrace or in the garden.
Caring for catharanthus is standard and not at all difficult. The plant loves constant average soil moisture, does not respond too well to both insufficient and excessive watering. Measures to increase the humidity of the air are somewhat complicated by the fact that the flowers cannot be soaked during spraying, but the installation of an ordinary pallet filled with wet pebbles or moss is quite suitable for this crumb. Top dressing is applied with the usual frequency from March to September.
Catharanthus reproduce very easily. In order for you to have small plants that can bloom violently next year, it is enough to cut the apical cuttings in August, the plants from which will then replace the discarded mother bush. It is advisable to keep small plants in winter after rooting in a cool place - an air temperature of about 15 degrees. You can get your own catharanthus from seeds.
When working with catharanthus, especially during grafting or transplanting, it should be borne in mind that this species belongs to poisonous crops and requires caution, additional hand protection measures.
