5. Feathers, spots and symmetrical patterns of calatas
Among decorative foliage crops, you will not find another plant of the same type with unusual patterns on the leaves, which would cause associations with different "animal" motives. Qalat (Calathea) - not the easiest in the cultivation of a culture, but they can boast an enviable variety.
The capricious calathea flaunts a surprisingly rich palette of colors. The reverse side of the leaves is reddish-purple. But on the top plate, the basic pure green color is combined with spots and stripes of yellow, emerald, silver, pink, purple, whitish tones.
Calatheas can grow up to 70-80 cm. These rhizome herbaceous perennials produce large oval leaves on long petioles, creating lush clumps. Leaves develop from rosettes on short vertical shoots extending from underground shoots.
The oval shape of calathea leaves is not at all monotonous. Broader or more elongated, with or without a rounded tip, straight-leaved or with a wavy edge, all calatheas are equally easily recognizable. The size of the leaves ranges from 10 to almost 30 cm.
But the main secret of the popularity of calathea is not at all in the form, but in the patterns on the leaves. Calathea's patterns are really original, they resemble tropical birds, peacocks, parrots. But there are also more original variations, when patterns and spots add up to whole pictures and outlines.
The flowering of kalata is the advantage of only selected species, in which the leaves are much more ordinary-looking.
Calathei are rightfully considered capricious cultures. They grow in diffused bright light or in light partial shade, and lose their color when shaded. These plants require watering with soft water, abundant enough in summer, and very high humidity - about 90%. Calatheas are transplanted once every 2 years.
Calathei are decorative deciduous soloists who, however, can cope with the task of decorating groups and collections of indoor plants just as well. They look great both in living rooms and in other areas of the house. Plants can be grown not only in the substrate, but also hydroponically.
The role of calathea in the interior
- as a smart accent;
- as a textural accent;
- compensate for boredom and design flaws;
- bring liveliness to the decor of the room.
Among the kalata there are many original species and even more inimitable varieties. In fact, each calathea, with rare exceptions, boasts its own special "feathers" or "twigs" on the leaves. For example, the pinkish-colored calathea (Calathea roseopicta) flaunts with oval leaves separated by a central bright pink line and thin side stripes, as if outlining another leaf inside. And the wonderful calathea (Calathea crotalifera) is an absolutely amazing species with wavy bright light green leaves of a lanceolate-elongated shape, on which a "branch" of oval dark green spots is symmetrically located.
