2. Chubushnik

In terms of the degree of aroma, only mock orange, better known here as garden jasmine, can compete with lilacs. One of the easiest shrubs to grow with beautiful flowering has nothing to do with real jasmine, and apart from a very similar sweet, intoxicatingly rich aroma, chubushnik has nothing in common with a thermophilic liana. Unlike lilacs, the mock-orange creates visually lighter and smaller, graceful and very picturesque fences.

Bright color of rather lush greenery, ease of molding, beauty in the spring-summer period are the undoubted advantages of the chubushnik, but nevertheless, the main attention to the shrub is riveted during its flowering. Very fragrant and pretty, double, light cream flowers bloom on the shoots, enveloping the entire surrounding space with a sweet aroma.

Chubushnik hedges can reach a height of 3 m, although if desired, their size can be contained by pruning. Since chubushniki bloom from the age of one, you can appreciate the beauty of the hedge already in the first year after planting.

Due to its complete frost resistance and unpretentiousness, the chubushnik is perfect for planting a richly flowering and dense hedge in the difficult conditions of the middle zone. Despite much more abundant flowering on fertile and high-quality soils, the mock-orange can grow on rather scarce soils. The only thing that this plant cannot tolerate is waterlogging of the soil and its compaction. To create a hedge, it is advisable to select the brightest, sunny areas.

Advantages of the mock-orange hedge:

  • fragrant and visual lightness, bright green;
  • high height with a relatively modest width;
  • ease of shaping and maintenance, the ability to quickly restore the decorativeness of plants due to the good carrying of even cardinal pruning.

Best views for hedges

The most spectacular landscape-type lush-flowering hedges can be obtained from the crown, large-flowered, Caucasian and Shrenk mock-mushrooms. It is better to use not varietal plants, but old and so-called basic forms that are well adapted in your climate. When buying, try to choose chubushniki grown in local nurseries or use your own cuttings.

Landing rules

A garden jasmine hedge can be created from both adult, 2-3-year-old seedlings, and from cuttings, planting them for rooting along the entire future length of the hedge at an optimal distance and providing greenhouse conditions thanks to hoods. But to get the most effective hedge in the shortest possible time, it is better to use already well-rooted seedlings.

Chubushniki are planted in spring or autumn at a distance of 50 cm between the bushes in trenches or pits of approximately the same depth (+ height of the drainage layer). As the latter, it is better to use a mixture of crushed stone or broken bricks and sand. When planting, you need to carefully monitor the depth of the root collar, which should not be lowered below the soil level by more than 3 cm. Usually, the mock-orange tolerates transplanting very well and quickly adapts; to speed up the process, in addition to post-planting, it is better to carry out another 2-3 supporting watering with a difference per week …

Features of caring for a hedge from a chubushnik

Chubushnik hedges are some of the easiest to maintain, but they require timely trimming. In order for the bushes to retain their attractiveness and ability to lush flowering, it is necessary to carry out formative and rejuvenating pruning annually or every 2-3 years, stimulating the active growth of annual shoots. In the early spring, the oldest branches are removed from the chubushnik and the crown is thinned, the tops of strong shoots are shortened and the weak lateral branches are cut more intensively for thickening.

If the bottoms are too bare at the hedge and it looks neglected, they resort to cardinal pruning. It must be carried out within 2 years, in the spring of the first year only 3-4 runs up to 30-40 cm high are left on the bushes, all other branches are cut to the soil level and additional feeding is required. Next spring, cutting is carried out on each of the left shoots, leaving only 2-3 strong branches. After 3 years, the hedge will fully recover and bloom just as intensively. Chubushnik will respond with gratitude to the immediate cutting of the inflorescences that begin to fade.

This plant will not need watering, except for the hottest and driest periods, but it is better to take care of feeding in a timely manner. It is advisable to make them for an adult hedge annually, in early spring. Even rare weeding with simultaneous loosening to a depth of about 5 cm and the creation of a mulching layer of peat will not interfere.
