Of all the ampelous crops, perhaps it is the Columnea that has the most luxurious flowering. It is an amazing plant with hard leaves and long shoots, whose tubular flowers give the whole crown an exotic "fiery" look.
Columnians belong to ampelous indoor plants, but they are grown not only in hanging baskets. This beauty can be planted in ordinary pots to create cascades and the effect of a living waterfall, and grown on a support.
Hanging, thin and long shoots of kolumnei are densely leafy. Small, ideally oval shaped with a pointed edge, leaves 1 to 3 cm long sit in pairs and create a neat ornamental pattern. The glossy sheen of the dense leathery leaves of the columnea makes the plant even more elegant. And the palette of varieties of columnea allows you to choose both classic and white-green or yellow-green options, plants with lanceolate or rounded leaves. The length of the shoots ranges from 40 to 80 cm.
The asymmetric tubular flowers of the columnea conquer with their length - up to 7 cm.The narrow tube gradually expands into a claw-like bent pharynx. Flowers bloom in the axils of the leaves along the entire length of the branches.
The color range of Columnea is limited to red and orange shades, but sometimes yellow Columnea and plants in which the base of tubular flowers are decorated with a yellow spot are found. Columnea blooms traditionally in autumn, although today many varieties have a shifted flowering period.
Columnea is used in rooms: bathroom, kitchen, living room, work areas, winter garden.
Columnea breeding methods: cuttings.
Columnians adapt well to lighting, bloom profusely in bright diffused light or partial shade. The plant does not react very well to the coolness in summer (optimal temperatures are about 30 degrees), but room temperatures are quite comfortable for it. In winter, the ampel is kept cool, because the number of flowers depends on the temperature. Annually after flowering, the columnea is transplanted into slightly acidic soil.
Columnea wintering: from 15 to 18 degrees.
Columnians are not difficult to grow, but they require care of plants. It is impossible to achieve success without maintaining high humidity, and spraying is not suitable for plants. Column is watered only with soft water, maintaining constant humidity even in winter. Top dressing is carried out at a standard frequency.
