6. Autumn crocuses

The group of autumn blooming crocus species on sale today is not as widely represented as spring crocuses. The easiest way to choose plants is according to the color and shape of the flowers, as well as according to your taste, because all autumn crocuses are strikingly similar in character.

Autumn crocuses are amazing plants that produce wide or narrow linear leaves up to 30 cm tall. Most crocuses develop leaves only in spring. There is nothing remarkable in the leaves of autumn flowering crocuses - they are often not even noticed in compositions.

Autumn crocus flowers are always elegant. With a width of 4 to 8 cm, they seem unusually large in autumn. They are easily recognized by their pointed, ovoid or diamond-shaped, lanceolate petals. The flowers rise above the ground on short or longer, but always powerful peduncles.

Autumn crocuses bloom in September, sometimes only in October, when the falling foliage already covers the garden with a soft cover.

Autumn crocuses are different. In some, the flowers are more like stars, while others are in everything similar to ordinary spring species. And the color scale allows you to choose the types and varieties to your liking. A soft palette of colors - soft lilac, white, lilac - is more common than bright lemon-yellow tones or saffron. But almost always the petals are decorated with the finest delicate veins.

Like spring crocuses, autumn species are priceless accents used in groups. They are used to create blooming spots - on the lawn, in the rabat, border, rock garden or rockery.

It is not difficult to choose a suitable place for autumn crocuses. They love lighted, warm places and areas, they never fully reveal their flowers in shade. Crocuses are afraid of getting wet, damp during the dormant period in summer, they grow better on loams, they like fertile and light soils with drainage or raised platforms. Care comes down to top dressing, but crocuses will not give up watering during the spring drought for the development of leaves and bulbs.
