1. Amaryllis

The first plant that is ready to replace the hippeastrum and offer an alternative to a more gentle flowering is the true Amaryllis. Hippeastrum is so often called simply amaryllis that many have forgotten about the true carriers of this specific name. And completely in vain. These are gorgeous delicate stars that deserve a return to the windowsills.

Amaryllis are both similar and different from hippeastrum. Bulbs with roots that do not die off for a dormant period produce spectacular, linear-belt-like leaves with a central vein about half a meter long only after flowering and shed them for a dormant period.

Dense peduncles of amaryllis up to 1 m in height develop very quickly, literally in a week or a little more, and are crowned with a multi-flowered umbrella, consisting of more than 12 flowers. Elegant, romantic, with almost perfect six petals, graceful flowers of genuine amaryllis are much smaller in diameter than hippeastrum. But their number compensates for the size, and the watercolor, delicate, pink-cherry palette seems so feminine and delicate that one cannot help but admire the colors.

Fragrant amaryllis traditionally bloom in late summer, not winter, but the flowering period can be shifted. The dormant period occurs in the summer, it boils down to shading, dryness, lack of dressing and a decrease in temperatures.

The conditions for this plant are similar to those of the hippeastrum. Amaryllis like very bright lighting during the flowering stage, but they don't like midday sun rays. During the dormant period, the plant is kept in shade. It is very easy to pick up temperatures: any room values for amaryllis are suitable if at the dormant stage it is possible to rearrange the plant to cool (at least up to 10 degrees).

Amaryllis feels great in a universal loose substrate, not too picky about the composition of the soil. The plant is rarely transplanted, once every 3-5 years, when the substrate is completely filled with children. The plant is very fond of a shallow planting and blooms better when forming a close family.

Caring for amaryllis is not difficult. During the active growing season, amaryllis loves abundant watering. By the rest period, they are gradually reduced. Top dressing is applied at a standard frequency; otherwise, caring for this plant is very simple. After flowering, watering is gradually reduced, maintaining a light soil moisture. Stop feeding and transfer the plant after loss of leaves in the shade and coolness for at least 8 weeks.
