9. Salvia, or annual sage
Unlike perennial representatives of the huge sage family, annual salvias conquer not with a cold blue-violet palette of inflorescences, but with bright red fairly large and relentlessly blooming flowers throughout the summer and early autumn. This annual is characterized by tetrahedral shoots and tubular flowers that bloom in large quantities at the tops of the branches. Depending on the variety, the height of annual sage ranges from 25 to 80 cm, many salvias today have original colors. Flowering of this plant occurs 70-80 days after sowing.
Salvia seedlings are easy to obtain, sowing is carried out at the end of February and during March. For this plant, it is necessary to prepare containers for sowing and two picks. Unlike most annuals, sage requires the creation of a thick enough bullet of expanded clay or any other drainage material at the bottom of the planting container. The boxes are filled with a light and fertile substrate so that approximately 2 cm of free space remains up to the top of the container. After filling the container, the soil in them is watered abundantly, covered with foil or glass and left overnight. Sowing seeds of annual sage is carried out only the next day.
Small salvia seeds are usually mixed with dry sand in equal parts in order to be able to control the density of their distribution over the surface of the substrate. They are carefully scattered over the ground, moistened with a spray bottle and covered with a very thin layer of soil no more than 2 mm high. After that, moistening is repeated and the seedlings are covered with foil or glass. Sage seeds germinate at temperatures ranging from 20 to 25 ° C. Light for germination of Salvia seeds is not critical, but as soon as the first shoots appear, it is necessary to rearrange the seedlings to the sunniest place or compensate for the lack of lighting with additional lighting.
Young sage will be able to develop and get stronger only if the daylight hours are not shorter than 12 hours. For growing seedlings, it is extremely important to ensure a stable light moisture content of the substrate, without allowing even a slight drying out of the earth, but also without excessive moisture. With excessive watering in young sage, the base of the stem instantly decays. At the very first signs of a "black leg", it is necessary to drastically reduce watering, sprinkle the plants with sand or ash, remove the shelter and conduct an urgent pick.
With the normal development of young seedlings, glass is removed from them only as the plants grow up to its height. Diving sage for the first time must be carried out in common containers or boxes after releasing 2 real leaves. The second dive is carried out after the appearance of the third pair of leaves in individual containers. When diving, it is necessary to protect the seedlings with paper caps or screens from the sun and, be sure, to carry out very abundant post-procedure watering. During the cultivation of seedlings, she needs to provide 3 additional fertilizing with complex fertilizers. After blooming the third pair of leaves and transplanting, the top of the stem must be pinched.
Salvia is transferred to open ground only after the threat of return frosts has completely disappeared. The recommended distance between plants when planting is from 20 to 30 cm. In the initial period of growth in a permanent place, sage seedlings are vulnerable to weeds, which easily suppress its growth, and needs rather intensive fertilizing.
