The system of garden paths and paths not only helps us to move around the site comfortably, but also performs many important other functions. Some of the most important are zoning, dividing the garden and giving it an attractive structure and expressiveness. Paths and paths emphasize and reveal the design style and create the base on which the landscaping is based. And also - they help to emphasize the spaciousness and give the garden mystery and mystery. One of the easiest ways to accomplish this last task is to use masking groups of shrubs and perennials along the paths to play with panoramas and perspective.

Why hide the open, or a little about garden magic

The system of paths and paths is not accidentally called the “arteries” of the garden. The network of communications and paved paths serves not only the purpose of the convenience of movement around the site, but also determines its style, structure, zoning and expressiveness, functionality and general perception.

The paths most often divide the garden into separate isolated zones or attract the eyes to winning and important objects and corners. But the path is not always enough for a harmonious design, and the paths themselves, without additional framing, will not make the design more expressive.

Ways to make paths a garden decoration are very diverse:

  • decoration of curbs or low hedges on the sides;
  • design of narrow mixborders;
  • "Bringing" to the path of flower beds or a bed;
  • placing of "guards" - paired plants-accents;
  • using lighting to play with illusions;
  • combining coverings, varying the width and paving of paths for additional structuring.

But it is difficult to find an option as effective and bright as the use of small in terms of occupied area, but very effective masking groups.

In fact, the masking group along the path is a small ensemble of shrubs and perennials, which is perceived as a complete and harmonious composition. She plays the role of decoration, vertical accent, and concealer. Such groups are divided into a minimum area. They use woody shrubs of the most expressive forms and compact sizes and the best herbaceous perennials that can do without maintenance and grow in some shade.

The main task of the masking group is to split the view and panorama so that a new and unexpected perspective opens up around every turn or on every section of the path and path, so that the garden does not reveal all its secrets at first glance and there is more mystery in it. In a word, so that any walk in the garden and even the thousandth passage would always be perceived as an unexpected journey, one involuntarily wanted to reveal its secrets to infinity.

They (groups) are placed where it becomes boring, the eye has nothing to catch on, the panorama and the view from the path seem too flat and banal, there is a feeling of obviousness and commonness.

With the help of masking groups, you can hide certain corners or areas of the garden from view, mask the view that opens around the bend, make a "secret" bench near the hedge or a corner for rest, prevent you from directly seeing a gazebo, a pond, a vegetable garden - add mystery to the garden and awaken interest.

Flat design devoid of intrigue is the main enemy of the pleasure of walking and relaxing in the garden. And where the path simply runs through an open area or there is clearly a lack of some kind of "eye catching" element, you can safely plant masking plants.

Such landings also have one more, often underestimated function: with the help of simple masking groups, you can adjust the wind situation and lighting on the site, remove blown open spaces, create additional noise and wind insulation. And also to protect yourself from prying eyes by completing several tasks at once with the help of a very simple decorative group.

Masking groups can be created for any garden and any path

A small arrangement of plants that are placed along the path and help hide the view is often called a technique for decorating gardens in a natural style. But such "tricks" may well be used in a regular garden. After all, it is enough to replace ordinary shrubs or trees with shorn ones, to approach the selection of perennials in a different way - and such a group will no longer look like a picturesque wild, but will appear as a classical and strict symphony of geometry and lush flowers.

Of course, in those gardens where the paths are laid nonlinearly, windingly, where the paths themselves give the garden a romantic and mysterious look and visually enlarge the site, it is easier to use masking tricks (there are more turns and bends). But this is not the only option.

Camouflage plantings, most often, are placed on the bends of the path, at the very turn or behind it in such a way as to hide the panorama from the strolling through the garden and add better structure to the garden. But such placement is not the only and far from obligatory way. If you have straight paths, not winding ones, or a path that crosses a space with boring vertical relief, "planes", then you can place the masking group literally anywhere, where it will change the perception of the view and make it more interesting.

If the path is combined with a staircase, then masking groups are placed, as if enclosing the upper steps in the wings. If you want to hide the view of one of the resting corners, then it is enough to walk along the path and find the point from which you will see this corner for the first time. This is where you need to place the group that hides the overview.

Plants for camouflage plantings

Two types of plants are used to create masking groups:

  1. 2-3 large shrubs or compact woody - vertical elements or vertical base;
  2. From 2 to 5 perennials and creeping shrubs at their foot, linking the whole group together - the "pillow" of the group.

Placing them is very simple: vertical accents are literally placed in one line, varying the height and volume to achieve an expressive base. And the area under and around them is filled with large groups of perennials, creating a kind of frame and a single composition.

One plant in a pillow under the bushes is not planted: since this is an ensemble of only a few plants, it is better to reveal the beauty of each and emphasize the idea of planting in large spots. And large groups of perennial crops will better balance the shrubs and visually compensate for their size.

Finding plant species that can do a good job is easy. After all, all used crops - both shrub-woody and herbaceous - must meet fairly strict criteria:

  • put up with shading or grow in the shade if they are placed under dominant shrubs;
  • be hardy and unpretentious;
  • keep decorativeness during the entire active season, and at least 2 plants in a group - also their attractiveness in winter;
  • be distinguished by beautiful and textured foliage;
  • contrast with any neighbor in texture, color, shape and size of the leaves;
  • match the style of the garden.

It is best to start “screening” candidates from plants that have already been used in landscaping the site. The most spectacular and easy-to-grow types of ornamental plants will tell you which crops are best to choose so as not to be disappointed over time. It is necessary to take into account the color scheme of the garden, and the blooming cultures dominating in it, and the main design motives.

It will be difficult, and more often than not impossible, to create a group in which the flowering of plants would pick up each other. So bet on one season or one plant for each season, and form the core of a group of versatile plants. The main thing is textural expressiveness, accuracy, splendor and integrity, a complete image, and not flowering.

Evergreens allow you to create a group that will fulfill its function even in winter, give the garden integrity and fit into skeletal plantings. One of the best candidates is a creeping juniper, which can be added to perennials at the foot of large shrubs. Growing and getting better over the years, it will create a very beautiful and lush base for the composition.

Also, the number of low crops can be supplemented with creeping euonymus, among which you can choose variegated variations to your taste. They will also highlight the composition, add an interesting glowing effect and modern texture to it.

There are also plenty to choose from with high winter green accents. Spruce prickly or blue, columnar junipers, thujas and yews, pines or euonymus are beautiful, strict, always attractive and great-looking plants all year round.

Ornamental deciduous and flowering large shrubs can be selected to your liking. Gorgeous decorative willows or derins are great candidates. As well as compact maples, rhododendrons, lilacs, chubushnik, decorative viburnum, apple or cherry trees.

Herbaceous perennials from among the favorites will perfectly cope with the task of harmoniously complementing shrubs. Yarrow, penstemone, catnip, sage, coreopsis, bluehead, geranium, echinacea are favorites among the flowering species. And among the ornamental-deciduous, pay attention to ferns, wormwood, purse, hosts and co. Consider the lighting and plant groups of shade-tolerant crops under dense bushes, and more light-loving species around the perimeter of the group.
