4. Okra, or okra

Okra, or okra, has no close relatives among the usual garden crops, but its "sister" mallow is very often found in flower beds and in front gardens. And such a relationship could not but affect the appearance of the overseas beauty.

During flowering, it is very difficult to immediately say what kind of plant has settled in the garden - a vegetable or a flower? The flowers of the okra are large, light yellow in color and have a typical mallow shape, resembling hibiscus, lavatera, malopa or non-double mallow. After flowering, original fruits are formed in their place, which can further mislead novice gardeners - either it is a large pod, or a small pepper.

In okra, it is these young "pods" that are used in food like asparagus beans.

Interesting Okra varieties and hybrids

Thanks to the work of breeders, okra fruits are no less attractive than its large flowers. For example, the varieties of okra "Alabama red", "Jing" and some other pods have a bright red hue. By the way, due to the presence of edges when cutting the pods, charming stars are formed that can decorate any dish.

This property was improved by the development of the Star of David okra hybrid, which has the most facets in the fruit. It is difficult not to want to grow a vegetable with such an original appearance, among other things, also endowed with the title of "medicine for all diseases." Among the diseases for which it is recommended to use okra are atherosclerosis, diabetes, diseases of the respiratory tract, eyes, digestive and nervous systems, and even cancers.

Due to its high content of mucous substances, okra is considered an ideal ingredient in soups, and we regularly use its fruits for preparing first courses. When okra is added to vegetable soups, they become thicker and look very original and appetizing. In vegetable stews, okra is also the main decorative and nutritional element that adds an eggplant flavor to the dish. It is no less delicious to grill faceted pencils.

But if you missed the moment of harvesting, then from ripe okra seeds, ground and fried in a pan, you can make a coffee drink like "Chicory".

Features of growing okra

In the wild, okra grows in tropical Africa, so the main feature of the plant can be considered its extreme thermophilicity. In the middle lane, the okra can be grown exclusively by seedlings. And when planting seedlings in the ground, take special care. In my garden practice, it happened twice that bad weather ruined healthy large seedlings.

Okra shoots, although they look quite massive, at first do not tolerate strong winds at all, so it is better to place the okra bed in the most windless places. Cold weather has no less detrimental effect on young crops, and not only a noticeable frost, but also a drop in temperature to + 1 … + 2 degrees can lead to the death of plants.

To insure yourself against such problems, it is better to postpone planting okra in the ground until early June (when sowing seeds indoors in mid-April). For full growth and a bountiful harvest, African culture requires a sunny place, regular fertilizing with complex fertilizers and timely watering.
