Vermicomposting - a biofactory created by nature

The waste products of earthworms are biohumus, or vermicompost, or coprolite. It is not only a crumbly substrate with a pleasant smell of forest land, but also:

  • fully stabilized (storageable) fertilizers with a low carbon to nitrogen ratio C: N;
  • natural growth regulators;
  • antibacterial and suppressing pathogenic fungi substances;
  • substances that repel insect pests.

Vermicompost has a close to neutral acidity level (pH 7.0), which is ideal for growing most types of plants - from tomatoes to orchids.

Most often, manure (compost) worms are used for vermicomposting. They easily adapt to all types of organic matter, grow quickly and are also very prolific.

How to make vermicompost at home?

To obtain vermicompost, you can take a wooden box about 60x30x25 cm in size, but there are compact and easy-to-use plastic vermicomposters - special container systems. First, you need to properly "charge" it. Coconut mats are placed in the lower, main container. They populate the population of worms (they can be purchased from producers selling broodstock). Then the crushed organic waste is placed on the substrate in a thin layer. After 2-4 days - a new layer.

The contents of the container must be watered in moderation 1-2 times a week. As soon as the box is full, the next one is set on top - with a mesh bottom, on which the feed is again layered. After some time, all the worms will crawl into the upper box, and in the lower one there will be practically finished vermicompost (it must be well dried and carefully sieved through a sieve with a mesh size of 3-5 mm).

Conditions for vermicomposting

To breed worms, the following conditions must be observed:

  • substrate temperature 20-28 ° C;
  • humidity 70-80%;
  • pH value of the habitat 5.0-8.0;
  • saturation of the substrate with oxygen;
  • regular addition of good organic materials.

In winter and summer

The vermicomposter is equipped with a ventilation system, protection against flies, an airtight tray with a tap for "vermicom" (by the way, an excellent liquid fertilizer for plants) - all this allows you to avoid unpleasant odors and recycle food waste all year round even in a city apartment, not to mention a country house. where such systems are placed outdoors in the shade in summer, and in any heated room in winter. In the off-season, the resulting vermicompost is fed to indoor plants or the finished product is poured into bags (about 20 liters are produced during the winter).

If worms are unacceptable for you as lodgers, and trips to the country end with the first frost, the worms can be released into the compost heap. Previously, it must be protected from below and around the perimeter with a netting from moles, and then insulated with foliage and straw. In the spring, the worms can be collected in a box with a mesh bottom, putting fresh "food" there.

Waste for vermicompost

Finely ground organic matter is suitable for processing:

  • vegetable waste;
  • food (kitchen) waste;
  • paper and cardboard;
  • dust from the vacuum cleaner, hair or wool after clipping.

In addition to organic matter, worms also need minerals, especially calcium: gypsum, chalk, eggshell, dolomite flour ground into powder. Add them one teaspoon at a time to the substrate weekly.

As a result of the use of vermicompost and biological products based on it:

  • the resistance of plants to diseases and stressful situations increases (drought, transplants, temperature fluctuations, high concentrations of chemicals);
  • the need for irrigation is reduced due to moisture capacity and water-holding capacity;
  • the growth and development of plants, flowering, fruiting and productivity are accelerated;
  • the number of insect pests is reduced, their reproduction is suppressed;
  • the number of soil phytopathogens and phyto-nematodes decreases.
