A shovel, a rake, a hoe - traditional tillage tools in the country - are slowly becoming a thing of the past. They are being replaced by more perfect tools for working in the garden and vegetable garden. So, comparatively, a new tool is the plane cutter of the engineer-inventor V. V. Fokin. It allows you to perform more than 10 types of soil cultivation without the involvement of other tools and special loads on the lower back and legs. How to work with a flat cutter correctly, and whether it has any drawbacks, let's try to figure it out in the article.

How did you come up with a flat cutter?

Vladimir Vasilyevich Fokin owes his invention to … a heart attack! After a serious illness that overtook the inventor in 1987, he could not, as before, work in the garden. The burden was too great for his weakened health. And Fokin came up with a tool with which it was not difficult even for him to process 20 acres of a vegetable garden.

In 1997, the Fokin plane cutter was patented by the creator, and today this tool is used not only in Russia and neighboring countries, but also in Europe and the USA.

Types of flat cutters

Fokin's flat cutter is made of high-carbon alloy steel. Outwardly, it looks like a plate bent in a certain way. It is sharpened by 3 cutting edges (two long on the sides and one short on the sharp end of the plane cutter), which must be additionally sharpened periodically during use. The sharper the tool is sharpened, the easier it is for them to work (almost effortlessly).

Fokin's universal flat cutter is always sold as a set ("Small" and "Large " flat cutters), packed in a box with a logo, which contains:

  • two products identical in design, but different sizes (large and small) and fasteners to them;
  • the tool and fasteners (4 nuts, 4 bolts and 4 lock washers) have an anti-corrosion coating;
  • the set is accompanied by a certificate of product quality from the manufacturer.

But a typical (universal) set of two tools is sufficient in an ordinary dacha, not exceeding 4-8 acres, but what about the adjoining plot, which sometimes amounts to 20-40 or even more acres?

Currently, several varieties of Fokin's plane cutter are produced. It is more convenient for them to work on large areas ("Large carpet", "Small carpet"). The tool body is longer and narrower than that of conventional large and small flat cutters.

For hilling plantings and shoots of beds of any height, we offer the model of the Mogushnik plane cutter, which has a wide blade.

For work on heavy alumina soils and virgin soil, it is more convenient to use "Krepysh" - another type of flat cutter. Compared to a conventional large flat cutter, the Krepysh blade is shortened without changing the blade width.

Basic rules for customizing a plane cutter "for yourself"

To bring the tool into working condition, it is enough to attach it with fastening bolts to the handle. It is better to use a flat handle, to which it is more convenient to attach a steel tool. There is a third hole in the Fokine plane cutter, designed to secure the tool to the handle at a certain angle, which turns it into a simulated hoe.

Having assembled the plane cutter, do not rush directly to the site. Be sure to adjust it to your height, working hand (right, left). It is convenient to hold the handle when working with two hands, located on it after about 10-12 cm.

Fokin's plane cutter, correctly adjusted for height, will move parallel to the soil level. In this case, the back will be straight. Only hands work.

If the plane of the blade deviates up or down, the worker is forced to exert more force to do the job or to bend over, this means that the angle of inclination of the mount must be changed. The angle of inclination is changed by moving and fixing the blade in another, adjacent hole on the handle.

Most often, negative reviews about Fokin's flat cutter are due to the fact that the gardener simply incorrectly "adjusted" it for himself.

Examples of work that can be done with a flat cutter

As mentioned above, with a Fokin flat cutter, you can perform almost all work related to the care of soil and plants. Tilling the soil with a flat cutter does not violate the structure of the soil, retains beneficial microorganisms in the upper layer, which are necessary for processing coarse organic matter into vermicompost.

Using a flat cutter for soil cultivation reduces the time required, requires less effort when performing various works. One tool allows you to perform at least 12 works in the country and the local area.

1. "Digging" the soil in autumn and spring

The "sting" of the Fokin plane cutter is stuck into the ground at a convenient angle for the entire length of the blade before turning ("heel"). A loosened row 10-15 cm deep is formed. The next run is pulled side by side. Such "digging" is several times faster than if you dig with a shovel. It is especially convenient in this way to "dig up" narrow beds, on which the gardener does not trample (trampling the soil).

2. Crevice of soil

The blade, as well as when loosening, is stuck into the soil to its full length and pulled along. If necessary, cut the same strip twice with a flat cutter.

3. Leveling the soil and breaking up large clods

To level the loosened surface of the site, the Fokin plane cutter is placed flat on the soil with its tip to the right. Forward and backward movements, the loosened area is leveled. Break large lumps with the heel.

4. Formation of beds

So that when watering the water does not go beyond the borders of the garden, its edges are raised, throwing over the soil with a flat cutter, as when working with a hoe. The blade with the long side is placed on the soil parallel to the bed, the cutting should be perpendicular. The blade is slightly deepened into the soil at an angle, and with movements from oneself to the bed, they rake and throw soil over it, forming the required height.

5. Thinning of crops

Dense (thickened) crops of dill, carrots, parsley, celery are usually thinned out with a small Fokin flat cutter, processing the plants with a narrow part of the tool across the planting.

6. Weeding of row spacings with weed control

The tool is placed flat on the ground, the blade is turned to the left (right-handed). Slightly deepening the long side of the blade (3-5 cm), pull it with you. No need to strain your back, raising and lowering, like a regular hoe, when removing weeds. Weeds are best removed when young. Tall overgrown weeds are dug in with the edge of a blade and pulled out of the soil with a Fokin flat cutter or cut with a rounded "heel".

7. Sowing seeds

Rows of the required depth are cut with the edge of the plane cutter recessed to the required depth. They bring in the seeds (here you have to bend over) and cover them with movements, as when leveling the soil.

8. Preparing holes for planting seedlings

With the sharp end of the Fokin flat cutter, they dig holes of the required size, plant it and huddle with the same movements as when forming a bed.

9. Strawberry / strawberry whisker trimming

In narrow aisles, the mustache is cropped with a sharp end, and in wide spacings, just like weeds. Simultaneously with trimming the whiskers with a Fokin flat cutter, weeds are also removed. The tool is slightly buried in a wide strip in the soil, placing the "heel" to the row and pulling it along, cutting off a thin layer of soil with weeds and whiskers.

10. Spreading mulch, compost, humus

These materials are pulled apart from the heap in a beam-like plane cutter in different directions.

11. Cutting green manure for mulch

Fokin's flat cutter can replace the scythe, cutting off the aerial part of the green manure, which can be left in place or used for mulching the area.

12. Destruction of soil crust after irrigation or precipitation

You can work in the vegetable garden, orchard, berry. Together with surface loosening of the soil, weeds are cut off. With the wide side, the blade of the plane cutter is placed flat on the soil, slightly deepened and pulled the tool towards itself, cutting a thin layer of soil along with weeds.

In addition to those listed, Fokin flat cutters can perform other work. The owners (more often women), who are in love with this miracle tool, say that if the farm has a Fokin flat cutter, other tools for tillage can "rest". Is it really?

Fokin's flat cutter - for and against

The flat cutter loosens well (imitation of digging without turning the layer) developed soils, better - formed in the form of narrow ridges. Trampled soil during autumn loosening is difficult to cultivate. The loosening depth is reduced.

The virgin land, overgrown with sod and mature, well-developed weeds, is very difficult to master with Fokin's flat cutters, even of various modifications.

If the site is clogged with rhizome weeds, Fokin's flat cutter, cutting the underground part of the plants during deep loosening, contributes only to their reproduction.

It is convenient to use a flat cutter to spread organic fertilizers, but it is impossible to apply them with a flat cutter into the soil (inside).

When hilling garden crops with a Fokin flat cutter, the straight back rests, but the hands perform more movements, raking the ground under the bushes.

If necessary, the oblique is still easier and faster to mow green manure.

Fokin's flat cutter was designed specifically to reduce stress on the spine, which is very important for sciatica and for elderly gardeners. Working with a flat cutter, you protect your back and other organs from undue stress while doing garden work.

True, today, due to the increase in demand for Fokin flat cutters, it is increasingly possible to buy their cheap fakes. Usually, fake:

  • made of thin low-quality metal;
  • bends easily with increased bending;
  • the tool does not have an anti-corrosion coating, it is simply painted;
  • often sold without packaging;
  • the mounting holes are sloppy;
  • bolts and nuts to secure the tool to the handle are very demanding.

But there is one more condition, without which even a real Fokin plane cutter will not meet the stated capabilities. This tool should be as sharp as possible when working! If the plane cutter is not sharpened from time to time, then all the work performed with its help will require physical strength no less than digging up the soil with a shovel.
