2. Lobelia Erinus

Blue queen lobelia erinus, or long-petiolized lobelia, or black lobelia (Lobelia erinus).

A plant that is more versatile and talented is difficult to find even among the best compact perennials. And this, not to mention the fact that lobelia is characterized by the most intense blue colors among all the summer, due to which it is considered today an almost irreplaceable crop.

Dense bushes with numerous, very fragile, creeping or drooping shoots, turning during flowering literally into a solid openwork spot - such is the lobelia, whose talents are innumerable. This summer is even suitable for simulating water and playing with a regular style, strict patterned and geometric compositions.

Black lobelia is a very compact summer plant, the height of the bushes of which will not exceed 10 - 20 cm. There are larger and smaller varieties. Thin shoots hanging in ampels or when planted on an alpine slide and supporting walls when planting flower beds and decorative compositions in the soil, spread along the ground, forming semicircular, cushion-shaped, dense and very dense bushes.

The branches of the lobelia branch at the very base, densely covered with lanceolate leaves, arranged alternately. The leaves create a beautiful green lace, but lobelia reaches its full decorative effect only during flowering. Small, strikingly blooming flowers with asymmetrical two sponges bloom in the axils of leaves one by one and sit on short pedicels.

Lobelia colors: white, blue, blue, violet colors of varying intensity and purity, sometimes with a contrasting white eye.

Lobelia more than compensates for its relative moisture-loving and dependence on watering by the ability to endure even fairly strong shading. This plant grows equally well in bright areas and in partial shade. Lobelias prefer high-quality, light and nutritious soils, they are afraid of compacted soils and, like most of the summer, do not tolerate fresh organic matter.

This plant is grown only through seedlings, and the sowing is complicated by almost dusty, strikingly small seeds.

Lobelia sowing dates are from February to April. Lobelias are planted in a permanent place only in the second half of May.

Planting distance: from 10 to 20 cm, depending on the variety.

Lobelia flowering time: from spring (usually flowering begins at the stage of seedling development) to frost.

Lobelia care actually comes down to watering. Plants react poorly to complete drying out of the soil, so it is advisable to water this summer plant during the slightest drought. But on the other hand, feeding for lobelia can be carried out less often than for most of its competitors, and the plant itself after a cardinal haircut grows well and blooms again no less violently than the first time.
