1. Ageratum Houston

Ageratum of Houston, or Ageratum of Houston, or Ageratum of Gauston, or Ageratum Mexican (Ageratum houstonianum) is one of the best blue-colored annuals.

Despite the fact that all annuals are able to bloom tirelessly from late May or early June to almost frost, the nickname "long-flowered" is inherent in only one of the magnificent annual crops. Ageratum is a special plant that stands out both in the structure of its inflorescences, in texture, and in a rare palette of blue colors.

Unusual fragrant inflorescences of this handsome man with bright and clean, usually acrylic or pastel colors, stand out against the background of any other garden culture and conquer the hearts of an increasing number of flower growers. And although ageratum is not the easiest annual crop to grow, its beauty is more than worth all the efforts.

Ageratums develop in the form of small bushes with numerous straight shoots. The height of the bushes varies, depending on the variety, from 10 cm in dwarf varieties to more than 60 cm in the largest varieties. A powerful fibrous root system allows the plant to easily tolerate a transplant, endows the ageratum with drought resistance and great endurance. The leaves of the plant bloom at the very bottom of the shoots, forming a kind of bright green pillow.

Light green or medium green color of heart-shaped, wrinkled leaves perfectly emphasizes the pure light colors of the inflorescences. Despite the fact that the ageratum is characterized by ordinary inflorescences-baskets, almost filiform reed petals and terry give the inflorescences, collected in complex shields, an amazing fluffiness. Ageratum inflorescences against the background of leaves seem literally furry and always surprise with their unique texture.

Ageratum color scheme: white, blue, lilac, violet and pink in pure variations and tones.

Ageratum belongs to drought-resistant, able to endure light shading of annuals. This is a thermophilic culture that does not tolerate even very light short-term frosts. For this summer, only fertile non-acidic soils with a loose structure, preferably loam, are suitable. Plants don't like fresh organic matter.

Ageratum can be grown through seedlings. This summer plant is not sown into the soil.

Sowing seedlings: traditionally carried out at the classical time, in March or April. Ageratum seedlings are transferred to a permanent place only at the end of May, after the threat of recurrent frosts has completely disappeared.

Planting distance: 10-25 cm.

Ageratum flowering period: from May-June to frost.

Ageratum care is not difficult. Top dressing for the summer season is applied every 10 days or less, it responds well to soil mulching or periodic loosening, requires watering only in drought. Faded inflorescences are cut off completely.
