Fishing belts are considered one of the most reliable means of the so-called biomechanical plant protection. They are used for garden trees and shrubs, mainly for fruit plants. But despite its status as a simple and plant-friendly means of pest control, trapping belts should be used very carefully. Like any other method of prevention and protection, they have their advantages and disadvantages. And you should not forget about the latter in any case.

Pest trap

Chemical methods of pest and disease control for both purely ornamental and fruit trees today have become almost the absolute norm for growing plants in your own garden. The use of even the most mild chemicals from among insecticides and fungicides is invariably associated not only with consideration for the environment, but also with the risk of soil contamination and an increase in the level of toxicity of fruits. Unlike chemical agents, biological and mechanical methods of plant protection are much easier to tolerate by the plants themselves, and do not cause such harm to the environment. But they should not be considered absolutely safe and harmless. As with any measure aimed primarily at protecting plants from pests and various garden infections, their impact is largely traumatic and quite "tough".

Popular biological measures include the use of decoctions and infusions of plants, microbiological preparations and other products. Along with them, trapping belts are also ecologically safe means of protection - devices for collecting and destroying pests in the form of a tape, which is fixed on tree trunks, creating a kind of belt. It plays the role of a trap set so that pests of fruit species cannot climb the trunk and lay eggs on tree branches.

Fishing belts are designed to combat such insects that cause a lot of harm to the most beloved fruit trees (plums, peaches, apple trees, pears, etc.), such as leaf rollers and moths. These insect pests reproduce very actively, their caterpillars cause significant harm not only to the yield, but also to the tree itself, damaging the ovaries, leaves, branches, bark and even the trunk of majestic woody plants. Moreover, the most common apple, pear, plum, fruit, oriental caterpillars are just as dangerous as the less common species.

The greatest activity for these pests is characteristic during the period of fruit formation, during their ripening and harvesting. Caterpillars are actually dangerous throughout the summer and autumn. As a result of damage by such pests, about half of the crop can be lost. And if you do not fight, the situation will worsen exponentially.

Types of trapping belts

Fishing belts play the role of both preventive and plant protection measures. In fact, the technology of their production and application has not changed for hundreds of years. The fishing belts can be treated with special insecticides or act purely "mechanically".

By impregnation, they are divided into several types

  • dry trapping belts, which are actually a trap made of cloth or burlap;
  • trapping belts treated with insecticides, which lead to the death of insects as a result of contact with a special agent;
  • sticky trapping belts, treated with a special adhesive, viscous mass and fixed to trees, which act like a conventional fly or aphid trap.

Since the process of making trapping belts is rather complicated and time-consuming, the simplest option is to purchase ready-made "funnels" - devices in the form of a wide strip about 15-20 cm wide with a sticky or non-sticky surface, consisting of several layers of paper, various fabrics and more often all also impregnating material (insecticide or sticky substance), which are designed to collect and destroy insects. This tape is applied to tree trunks in rings and tied very tightly to them. In addition to the classic hunting belts, there is also a substitute for them - glue, which is simply applied to the bark in the desired area.

How to make trapping belts with your own hands?

Some master gardeners prefer to make their own trapping belts. They can be created on the basis of compacted cardboard, burlap or fabric, thin foam rubber, cut into strips about 20 cm wide and with a length necessary to grip the trunk. The fabric or its analogue is folded in several layers and smeared with resin or tar, covered with polyethylene or several layers with folds are folded, in which caterpillars can "get stuck".

Fishing belts should be applied carefully

A certain negative effect both on the plants themselves and on the garden as a whole is also characteristic of such a simple means as trapping belts.

Trapping belts are put on precisely to protect against insect pests, but they are not at all designed for a specific, narrow circle of insects. Sticky and ordinary trapping belts stop pests and garden insects that try to climb the trunk to the same extent. In fact, along with stopping the spread of caterpillars, weevils and moths, they also reduce the garden population of beneficial insects, thereby depriving you of a reliable means of environmental protection. This is the biggest drawback of hunting belts and it is because of this that they are recommended to be worn only as a last resort.

It is worth using trapping belts only when it is really necessary. And this should be done wisely. The trapping belts must be fixed on the bark of the tree very securely, leaving no free space under them, since insects can get through, crawling under the adhesive tape and not falling on the protective layer. Don't go overboard with the sticky area. Even a minimal hunting belt fulfills its functions, and there is no need to create double or triple zones with adhesive tape; it is not necessary to wrap almost the entire trunk with it from top to bottom.

Hunting belts have another significant drawback - labor intensity. They are used in a small orchard, and even then they require a lot of time and effort.

How to use trapping belts?

The use of trapping belts has its own characteristics

  1. They are placed on tree trunks at a height of about 1-1.5 m.
  2. It is best to tie dry trapping belts no earlier than 2 weeks after flowering, but sticky and etched ones - before bud break.
  3. Before applying the trapping belt, it is necessary to clean the trunk of peeling old bark, remove moss and other contaminants by cleaning both on the trunk itself and on the lower skeletal shoots.
  4. Fishing belts should be inspected at a frequency of about 1 time per week, cleaning or replacing them.
  5. One belt can be used no more than 2 times, and even then it must be disinfected before the next use.
