Securinega can rightfully be called one of the most unusual garden shrubs. Despite the fact that this plant has been used as an ornamental crop for more than two hundred years, it remains rare and exclusive today. The main advantage of securinega is the inimitable graphic crown, it attracts everyone's admiring attention and invites you to admire the pattern of the branches, which creates intricate openwork patterns. In cultivation, this plant is simple, undemanding, it can give odds to absolutely any more popular garden shrub. Considering its smart look and indispensability for modern landscape design, the still low popularity of securinega seems rather strange.

The neglected securinega

Securinega (Securinega), or Flyugeya (Flueggea) - unappreciated, deprived attention plant growers. She has practically no drawbacks, while the advantages can "confuse" and the most popular garden species. But nevertheless, the securinega is still difficult to find, it is found so far only in truly select gardens. Such low popularity of this shrub remains a mystery.

Despite the rather exotic name, securinega is found in nature and here. This oriental plant, the wood of which is very hard and valuable, literally defies an ax (for which the securinega got its name from the Latin "securis" and "negare" - "ax" and "deny"). Securinega's decorative career has been going on for 200 years. And it remains to be hoped that the plant will experience a long-awaited explosion in popularity in the coming decades.

Securinega is a fairly extensive genus of compact shrubs. But a greater number of species of this plant are common in the tropics and subtropics. And we Securinega represented by only one plant, and which is used as an ornamental plant, and is referred to the best natural types - Flueggea Suffruticosa or Securinega vetvetsvetnaya (Securinega suffruticosa). Today it reclassified into the genus Flug - Flyugeya suffrutescent (Flueggea suffruticosa), but both names are synonyms are equally unpopular.

In the genus of flugea, to which this beauty is now attributed, there are much more cultivated plants: the number of known species of flugea is measured by almost ten. True, these Pyrenean plants are even less common in our country, they cannot be found in garden catalogs, and only seeds are occasionally found on sale as tropical shrubs that can take root only in the south.

Flugeya-securinega semi-shrub or branch-flowering is a low shrub, in which, even in nature, the maximum height is limited to 3 meters. In culture, it usually does not grow above 2 meters, reaching such sizes at a very respectable age. But this does not mean at all that the securinega grows slowly: the plant annually grows by about half a meter in diameter, actively releases more and more spreading thin shoots and literally transforms before our eyes.

The diameter of the crown of the securinega always exceeds the height, the shrub is open, similar to thickets. The plant sometimes forms one or two curved, inclined trunks up to 10 cm in diameter, adorned with a gray, rough textured bark. At the top of the shoots is a kind of fan, or a bunch of twig-like twigs, which create a graphic lace.

But most often, securinega develops as a sprawling shrub with twig-like, spreading, straight, slightly curving or arched hanging, thin shoots. The bark is light yellow, grayish on old branches. Thin and innumerable, the Securinega shoots are definitely its main decoration. Even the leaves, which bloom on the plant unusually late, do not hide their airy openwork.

Elliptical, solid, modest, but so harmoniously combined with the plant itself, they are arranged alternately and create a pretty green lace. And the rich, light and bright color visually distinguishes securinega against the background of other shrubs and seems to highlight the composition.

This shrub blooms quite late, in July. The flowering of the securinega is not as impressive as the crown, but it lasts about 50 days, and sometimes longer. It is a dioecious shrub in which the female flowers are arranged one at a time, and the male flowers are collected in few-flowered bundle-shaped inflorescences. Unlike women, they are fragrant, but also inconspicuous: greenish, small, they will not attract attention up close, but they will perfectly complement the image of an openwork plant.

The fruits of the plant ripen in September, they are spheroidal capsules that open very abruptly, shooting out with seeds. When spreading seeds, Securinega will attract attention even from a distance. But the fruits themselves adorn the shrub. Small boxes that hang like beads from the underside of the shoots on surprisingly long and thin pedicels seem to be almost jewelry pendants on this airy plant. The bush begins to bear fruit from the age of three.

For securinega, an unusual vegetation is characteristic: the stage of active development in a shrub lasts only a little more than four months. The plant starts to grow very late, decorating the spring garden with graphic patterns and a bizarre pattern of bare branches. Only at the end of May leaves begin to bloom on the plant and the securinega transforms into bright green lace.

On the eve of July, the openwork is enhanced by flowering, which perfectly complements the appearance of the crown. And with the arrival of autumn, the securinega quickly tries on a brighter outfit: its beautiful crown is painted in a uniform light yellow, which also seems to be a rather unusual color against the background of standard shrubs. The beauty of the autumn crown is further emphasized by the fruits.

The use of securinega in ornamental gardening

Securinega can be called a unique shrub. It is indispensable for modern styles of landscape design, since everything seems to be composed of fine lines, intricately intertwined into unusual lace. The graphic quality of the crown is not the only one, but certainly not in vain has deserved the title of the main, the trump card of this spreading plant. Thin twigs create a luxurious, bold, expressive decoration and allow the decoration to play with texture and volume of visual effects.

Another important feature of the securinega is that this shrub, despite its deciduous nature, adorns the garden literally throughout the year. The Securinega leaves late, but from the shedding of its bright fall foliage to the release of new greenery, the plant reveals its true beauty and uniqueness.

Graphic designs of securinega adorn the garden in winter, look great under a blanket of snow, and in spring, with an amazing contrast, they emphasize the beauty of primroses and main stars, bringing unusual, daring accents to the garden. In summer, a plant with a translucent crown instead of a pattern of shoots conquers with the openwork of unusual leaves, and in autumn it again manages to stand out against the background of all its neighbors. In terms of playing with patterns, drawings, textures, securinega is a plant that is truly unique and irreplaceable.

In the design of the garden, securinegu is used

  • as a graphic accent, soloist against the background of lawns or flat areas;
  • as a background plant in modern design that brings graphic textures and fills ensembles with new sounds;
  • for the edges;
  • to create a translucent graphic canopy under tall plants;
  • as a skeletal culture attractive throughout the year;
  • as a filler shrub;
  • in landscape plantings with playing on textures;
  • in corner or "blind" places against the background of decorative compositions;
  • in mixborders and as a background plant in flower beds;
  • for creating low hedges.

Securinega goes well with large woody and other shrubs. Moreover, it can be mixed not only with deciduous crops, but also with winter-green species and conifers to create striking texture contrasts. When planting as a background, it can be used with any perennials. This plant is not afraid of the neighborhood of even the brightest soloists.

Conditions for growing securinega

This is one of the most undemanding shrubs you can find. In nature, securinega grows equally well on forest edges, in cracks in rocks, and on slopes, in ordinary and rocky soils. The plant retains its undemandingness to the ground in the garden. Of course, it is better to choose high-quality, worked, loose soils for securinega. But securinega will also take root on depleted, sandy or rocky soil.

The main thing is to avoid neglected areas and overly compacted, acidic or damp soils and make sure that the soil is sufficiently air and water permeable.

Securinega can take root in any light except thick shade. She feels well in the sparse shade of large trees, in partial shade or in lighted areas.

Planting and caring for securinega

This shrub in the middle lane is planted only in spring. When planting, it is better to lay drainage at the bottom of the planting holes, add loosening additives or sand to the soil. The introduction of organic matter and complex fertilizers is encouraged.

Pleasingly surprising with its endurance, the securinega needs almost no maintenance. The plant does not need watering, it even tolerates prolonged drought well. Usually, no feeding is carried out for securinega. In fact, the only thing to take care of is removing damaged shoots and loosening the soil. The shrub reacts well to mulching. Young securinegs need weeding in the trunk circle.

The securinega is pruned in early June. The late "start" of this shrub, the growing season of which begins in late May or even later, forces you to prune in the summer. But for the securinega, it is not dangerous, and still pruning occurs at the very beginning of the stage of active development.

On securinega, they do not carry out the formation, but are limited to only sanitary cleaning: it is necessary to remove from the bush all the dead areas of the shoots that have not been restored after winter. Previously, pruning is not worth it: it is impossible to judge how much the young growth of this plant is frozen before the leaves are released.

Securinega wintering and pest and disease control

This shrub, in contrast to the related classic fluge, has sufficient frost resistance for the middle strip. Partial frosting of branches does not affect their attractiveness, and only young growths in securinega freeze (in unsuccessful winters - up to half the height). Such freezing does not bear any damage to the decorativeness of the bush either in winter or in any of the seasons. The Securinega actively releases thin young lashes and recovers quickly.

This shrub is remarkably resilient. Securinega does not suffer from pests or diseases, does not require preventive treatments.

Reproduction of securinega

The beautiful semi-shrub securinega flugea can be propagated both vegetatively and by seeds.

Cutting of young shoots is considered to be quite effective: in the plant, when treated with growth stimulants, slightly more than half of the cuttings take root. They are rooted using standard technology in a mixture of sand and substrate, under a film or hood with frequent ventilation and regular moistening. It is better to transfer rooted cuttings to a permanent place immediately.

Securinega seeds germinate only during cold stratification, therefore they are sown under snow or in spring after aging for 3 to 4 months at temperatures from 0 to 3 degrees Celsius. Sowing in a permanent location is ineffective due to the requirement for a shallow burial. Seeds are sown in shallow containers, in any nutrient substrate to a depth of about 0.5 cm. Young plants, as they grow, are transferred to individual containers, large boxes or greenhouses, and then to a permanent place. Securinega develops very quickly, in the first year it will reach half a meter in height and will surprise with a large number of shoots.
