What does Reinekia look like?

Reinekias are plants that came to us from China, although in nature these perennials are also found in Japan. Their picturesqueness, modesty and texturality perfectly demonstrate the variability of local decorative leafy cultures. Reinekia evokes associations with oriental design, stylistically it is a plant with more limited uses than its competitors. This plant is represented by the Asparagaceae family.

Reinekias are herbaceous evergreen perennials that are often compared to ophiopogons or lilies of the valley in growth form and character. They are characterized by a bizarre compact ground powerful creeping rhizome, which allows Reinekia to constantly grow in breadth and master the available space.

From the buds on the creeping roots of Reinekia, leaves grow in bundles-rosettes, creating a kind of sod. In fact, Reinekia is a ground cover. It can surprise even fans of selected indoor Spartans with its undemandingness, durability and sustainable decorativeness.

The maximum plant height is limited to 20 cm. The growth rate of Reinekia directly depends on the conditions: in a comfortable environment, the plant develops rapidly, constantly growing, and in case of care violations or carelessness, it can grow slowly.

Features of Reinekia leaves

Linear, tapering to the base, folded-grooved, curving in an arc at the top, but located in rosettes straight, Reinekia leaves surprise not with their complex color, but with elegant simplicity. Basal two-sided rosettes are not visible so well in dense bushes and are perceived quite original, a little reminiscent of bulbous ones.

The texture of the leaves is slightly transparent, they shine through in the light, showing a contrast between the dark veins on the leaves and the leaf itself. The leathery, glossy-smooth surface enhances the beauty of the plant. The leaves grow in length from 10 to 20 cm, depending on age and growing conditions.

The color of Reinekia is deep green. The upper light green side of the leaves is combined with an unevenly developing light reddish color of the lower side of the leaves, which does not seem to be contrasting or bright, but as if blurred from the petioles, surprisingly well emphasizing the beauty of the reddish-brown peduncles.

Reinekia bloom

The flowering of Reinekii can be considered one of the plant's advantages. This plant produces spikelet inflorescences, which are not so small, up to 1.5 cm in length, flowers with a filmy sharp bracts. They are not flashy, but they look very elegant. Light beige-lilac color is in harmony with leaves and their rich tone. Flowers bloom from bottom to top one after another. After flowering, the surprises of Reinekia are just beginning: in place of the flowers, red-carmine berries ripen, somewhat reminiscent of rose hips.

Reinek species

In room culture, only one type of Reinekia is grown - Reineckea carnea, flesh-colored or meat-red (Reineckea carnea). It is a compact herbaceous perennial with very beautiful foliage.

One of the most popular is variegata, a variegated form, in which white and yellow stripes of different thickness appear on a green background of leaves. But there are also brighter and more original plants with silvery stripes or an enhanced red tint, which appears even on the upper side of the leaf plates.

Conditions for growing indoor Reinekii

An unassuming shy woman who is content with almost any conditions - such a Reinekia appears before anyone who decides to replenish the collection with this amazing plant from the Far East. Shade-tolerant, not afraid of changes and drafts, Reinekia feels great in living quarters.

Reinekia is not the most popular plant that is rarely found in rooms. But in the design of winter gardens and greenhouses, especially in the greening of offices, this culture has recently become a real star.

Reinekia has proven itself as a plant for creating groups or arrays in large flower beds, a filler for tropical display windows and gardens, as well as a ground cover, a replacement for cereals and an alternative to continuous lawns and clearings in winter gardens. Reinekia can be used to fill the soil around large shrubs, lianas and trees in tubs. Her ability to get along with other plants is amazing.

Lighting and placement of Reinekia in the interior

Due to its origin, Reinekia has sufficient shade tolerance, which allows the plant to be placed not only on windowsills. Of course, reinekia will feel good on a north or west orientation window if it is protected from any direct sunlight.

But still, this plant reveals its beauty best in partial shade, at some distance from the window. The level of illumination that is uncomfortable for the plant is directly indicated by a change in color or the appearance of brown spots on the leaves. You can try to expose Reinekia in a stronger shade or move it closer to the window, choosing the most comfortable place in the interior.

In winter, the plant in the same place (as in summer) can stretch out and become bare. For Reinekia, it is advisable to organize movement to slightly lighter areas so that the level of illumination remains unchanged. The plant can also overwinter on the windowsill, but even the direct winter sun is contraindicated for this culture.

Reinekia can be planted with other plants or planted in separate containers. It perfectly decorates unusual containers and flower girls, is versatile, quite modern, bringing oriental accents or very interesting textures to accent in landscaping.

Temperature regime and ventilation

Reinekias adapt well to temperature extremes and various conditions. This plant thrives in a temperature-controlled winter garden as well as in ordinary rooms. Moderate temperatures allow Reinekia to develop more actively, the plant pleases with its growth rate at temperatures from +18 to + 23 ° С. But heat is not contraindicated for this plant.

Reinekia retains a high decorative effect only when the temperature drops for the winter. For this culture, it is sufficient to provide a temperature range of +14 to + 16 ° C. Falling below 10 degrees Celsius cannot be allowed for Reinekii.

Reinekia is not afraid of drafts, but to preserve the decorative effect of the leaves, it is better to grow the plant in a more stable environment. Carrying out to fresh air for the summer is not necessary; it can cause a growth disturbance in the plant due to too intense lighting.

Reinekia home care

Reinekia can be recommended for beginner flower growers and those who cannot devote a lot of time to indoor plants. It is unpretentious, it only requires careful watering and very rare dressings. To avoid problems in growing, it is enough to observe the plant and make adjustments to the care program in time.

Watering and air humidity

Reinekias are very moisture-loving plants that love abundant watering. Any extremes - both stagnant water and drying out of the soil are best avoided. Excessive humidity can lead to plant loss due to the spread of rot. The frequency of watering is set, allowing the topsoil to dry out (3-5 cm). After watering, water must be drained from the pallets immediately. In autumn and winter, watering is reduced, allowing the potted substrate to dry out more.

Reinekia loves spraying. It tolerates dry air, but in the heat and during the entire stage of active growth, it is better to spray the leaves of the plant to maintain a fresh look and active growth.

As part of its care, the plant will also need regular cleaning from dust. The rather large glossy leaves of Reinekia should be regularly wiped with a damp sponge, preventing dirt from accumulating. Soul mood is unacceptable for this culture.

Top dressing and composition of fertilizers

Reinekia is afraid of excess fertilizer. Too zealous feeding will cause this crop to lose its characteristic color, growth disturbance, and loss of foliage. It is advisable to apply fertilizers for the plant once a month, using a half-diluted portion of the preparations (in comparison with the manufacturer's recommendations). During the dormant period, in autumn and winter, Reinekia is not fed.

For this plant, it is better to choose universal fertilizers.

Trimming and shaping Reinekia

In this ground cover, pruning is reduced to removing damaged leaves. They are cut with a sharp knife, disinfecting the blades after each cut, at soil level.

Transplant, containers and substrate

Transplanting this plant is carried out only when the sod completely fills the space of the pot. Reinekia quickly grows in breadth, covering all the free space, but usually it does not need an annual transplant. For Reinekia, a transplant can be done during the spring months.

In this case, you can not use any pot that comes across. This plant is grown only in wide and shallow containers that allow the perennial to grow freely in breadth.

This is one of the indoor plants that can be content with any quality soil. Reinekia can be planted in a universal substrate, a mixture for ornamental-deciduous plants, or a self-compiled soil mixture with a neutral reaction. The soil should be permeable, light and medium nutritious. For Reinekia, you can, for example, mix peat, leafy soil and coarse sand in equal parts. This crop can be used for growing in hydroponics or in artificial soil, while the fastest growing rates are characteristic of Reinekia in ion exchange or hydroponics.

Diseases, pests and problems in growing

Reinekia is resistant to pests (with the exception of the risk of being infected by spider mites in the absence of hygiene procedures and dust accumulation in dry air), but diseases in this plant are very common. Reinekia is prone to spreading rot when the soil is waterlogged. It is necessary to fight decay by correcting care, drying the soil or an emergency transplant with root treatment with insecticides.

Common problems in growing Reinekia:

  • yellowing of leaves with excessive watering;
  • dropping leaves in dampness;
  • drying and deformation of leaves with an excess of nutrients.

Reproduction of Reinekia

Growing new Reinekia bushes is not an easy task. This plant is not cuttings and it is impossible to properly care for the seedlings at home. Therefore, the only available breeding method for Reinekia is the separation of mature shrubs. It is carried out on powerful, well-grown plants of 4-6 years of age.

It is necessary to divide Reinekia during transplanting bushes. The rhizomes of the plant are divided into parts, in which at least 2-3 leaves remain. Plants are not divided into large divisions, together with their reproduction they rejuvenate, separating new young shoots that can create high-quality sod over the years.
