Do you know how to become a millionaire? You can win a million in a famous TV game, or you can find a little-known, but beautiful and unpretentious flower in nature, invest in its reproduction and advertising, and get rich. This is exactly what happened to a certain enterprising American. Once, while walking, he noticed a curtain of bright unusual colors. They had strong, leafy stems, slightly similar to those of lilies, and spiky inflorescences that were bluish-purple in color, reminiscent of a dishwashing brush. The fat bumblebee busily examined every flower in the inflorescence, several butterflies fluttered from place to place, as if afraid that they would not get the fragrant nectar.

The plant lover liked the flower so much that he transplanted it into his garden. Later it turned out that this is a spicate liatrix from the Aster family and that he has a wonderful "character". Liatris prefers fertilized, drained soils and light spots. It is in such conditions that it is especially luxurious: numerous peduncles sometimes reach 2 m, and the length of the inflorescence reaches 35 cm. Under less favorable conditions, this plant is about 60 cm high and with fewer peduncles in the bush. During drought, liatris requires watering, but at the same time it does not tolerate waterlogging of the soil. Therefore, it is better not to plant it in damp places. But he is winter-hardy.

Liatris propagates by seeds and by dividing tuberous roots. A great many seeds are formed on the plant. They have good germination and when sown, they usually emerge with a "brush". When the first true leaf grows, the liatris seedlings have a very characteristic appearance, at this time they cannot be confused with anything: they look like miniature swords stuck with a handle into the ground. Seedlings bloom in the second or third year.

As the liatris grows and develops, numerous tuberous roots are formed, collected in a dense ball. They can also be used for breeding. It is better to divide the plants in the spring, when leaves begin to appear from the ground. Separate corms, into which the dug nest is divided, outwardly resemble crocus corms. The largest ones - up to 2 cm in diameter - will most likely bloom in the same summer, the small ones require growing.

Tuberous roots are planted to a depth of 5-10 cm, at a distance of 15-20 cm from each other. Liatris blooms in July-August. In Liatris, even the inflorescence is original. As a rule, in other plants with a spike-shaped inflorescence, flowers bloom from bottom to top. In Liatris, the opposite is true, at first the upper flowers open, and only at the end of flowering - the lower ones.

The nectar produced by the flowers attracts bees, bumblebees, butterflies and other insects.

Liatris looks great in mixborders, rockeries, in flower beds. Flowers cut into a bouquet stand in the water for a long time, retaining an attractive appearance, and dried plants can be used for winter compositions.

Liatris turned out to be such a wonderful plant. The businessman's desire to acquaint other people with this miracle of nature coincided with his desire to get rich. So a new millionaire was born in America, and the spikelet liatris became known to the whole world.

Since then, not only new garden forms have been obtained, such as liatris with white flowers, but even new varieties with a longer than the original species, inflorescence (Callilepis) or unusual color of flowers (Blue Bird).
