In mid-May, one of the main adornments of the flower garden is the elegant and unpretentious Bathers, or Trollius. Different regions have their own names for different types of swimsuits: kupava, bells, frying, lights, Siberian rose, avdotkas, beaters, coachman's grass, etc. Florists, on the other hand, often call the swimsuit trollius, which is an adaptation of its Latin name.
In total, there are about 30 types of swimwear, common in Eurasia and North America. About 20 species grow on our territory, found mainly in Siberia and the Far East, some of them grow in the European part.
Some types of swimwear
In our northern forests near water, in wet meadows, the European Bathing Lady (Trollius europaeus) lives. Its flowers are shaped like a bell (hence the popular name - "bells"). At the beginning of flowering, they are a shiny, soft lemon ball of tightly closed sepals, which gradually move apart, and then in the center a dense bunch of nectaries interspersed with stamens is visible.
A curious feature: sepals play the role of petals in the swimsuit, and real petals have turned into small tails - nectaries that attract insects. At the base of the plant there is a large basal rosette of beautiful finger-dissected leaves on long stalks. From its center upwards by 50 cm, or even more, a straight, strong stem rises, crowned with a beautiful flower. Large, numerous roots grow from the short branchy rhizome of the swimsuit.
In fry - the Asian swimsuit (Trollius asiaticus), widespread in our gardens, the flower is bright orange, its sepals are spread apart and nectaries and stamens are also clearly visible in the middle.
The larger Chinese swimsuit (Trollius chinensis) up to 120 cm high with even more expanded flowers is also popular. Its sepals are yellowish-golden, broadly oval. In the lower Ledebour swimsuit (Trollius ledebourii), no more than 80 cm high, yellow flowers up to 8 cm in diameter.
The cultural swimsuit (Trollius × cultorum) is also widespread, the numerous forms and varieties of which, mainly with orange and intense orange flowers, represent various hybrid versions of the Asian swimsuit, European swimsuit and Chinese swimsuit.
Popular varieties of swimwear
Some of the hybrids of the cultural swimsuit have large, original flowers. So, the Maygold variety combines the features of both frying and bells. The flower of the Orange ball variety is really a closed ball of sepals, through a small hole in the center of it you can see the inner content of an elegant flower. The Orange Queen swimsuit variety is distinguished by the grace of tall flower stalks with orange flowers and numerous, as if luminous stamens.
Swimsuit care
Bathing suits do not require much care, they are unpretentious. They grow well on humus-rich soils. You can plant the bushes throughout the summer, until the end of August. First, prepare a place for planting, taking into account that the plants should be at least 20 cm apart from each other. Then, dig out the bush that you intend to divide into several parts. Shake off the roots of the swimsuit, rinse in a weak solution of potassium permanganate. Using a sharp knife or pruning shears, divide the rhizome into several parts according to the daughter rosettes, sprinkle the cuts with ash. Plant in a prepared planting site, water well to strengthen the roots.
Leotards are decorative in summer, after flowering. When the elegant sepals fall off, first green and then drying brown boats of carpels remain, in the middle of which seeds ripen with good germination. They can be sown both in boxes and in open ground. Plants will not begin to bloom for the third year. But keep in mind that swimsuits are easily pollinated. And if you have several varieties growing side by side, then you can get a new hybrid, which for sure will not have the qualities of a variety. To preserve varietal qualities, cover some flowers with a paper cap during flowering.
