Zephyranthes. What a sonorous, beautiful word! Imagination immediately draws something graceful, gentle, touching … And few people realize that we are talking about an "upstart" that has firmly taken its place on many window sills. However, this plant does well in the open field.

In the room, mainly yellow zephyrantheses (Zephyranthe flavissima), pink (Zephyranthe citrina), large-flowered (Zephyranthe grandiflora) and white (Zephyranthe kandida) are grown. Only the last two can live in the garden, and you need to take care of them, like gladioli.

Zephyranthes have small (about 3 cm in diameter) ovoid bulbs, covered with dark brown, almost black, membranous scales. They are planted in spring with curtains at a distance of 5-7 cm from each other, buried in the soil by 7-8 cm. The most suitable soil for planting is light, well-drained, rich in humus. Plants love the sun, they are not afraid of light frosts. Responsive to feeding and watering, do not suffer from pests and diseases. But in our conditions, the seeds for some reason are not tied.

Delicate pink flowers of large-flowered Zephyranthes bloom until leaves appear. Each bulb grows two or three thin peduncles 20 cm long, on which slender bell-shaped flowers bloom, somewhat reminiscent of colchicum. And although each flower lasts for two or three days, if there are many bulbs in the curtain, it does not lose its decorative effect for a long time. By the way, the older the bulb, the more powerfully it blooms.

Then, dark green, narrow (1 × 20 cm) leaves begin to grow quickly. Re-flowering in this species usually occurs in late summer.

Zephyranthes white differs from large-flowered in narrower, thicker, long leaves and smaller flowers. At the end of summer, white funnel flowers bloom, slightly shaded pink on the outside.

In autumn, zephyranthes are dug up simultaneously with gladioli. Green leaves are not immediately cut off, but given time to dry out. Peeled bulbs are stored in boxes at room temperature until spring. After digging, you can do another thing with zephyranthes white after digging - transplant it into pots, and it will continue to grow all winter on the window. Zephyranthes reproduce well by children, which bloom in the third or fourth year.
