Two - leaved is a small genus of perennial herbaceous plants of the Barberry family. The genus contains only three species. Gray's bifolia is common in Russia in the Far East (Sakhalin, Kuril Islands), in Japan and China. Two-leaved Chinese is common in East Asia. Corymbose bifolia is a North American species.
The Latin name for two-leaved plant - diphylleia (Diphylleia) comes from the Greek. dio - two and phillon - leaf. This is due to the fact that the plant has only two leaves on long (up to 20 cm) petioles.
Bifolia is a very rare (listed in the Red Book) plant with beautiful white flowers and large leaves, perfect for use as an ornamental plant. The bifolia blooms in late May - June for several weeks. Thanks to its beautiful foliage, it is decorative throughout the growing season.
Description of two-leaved
Bifolia is a perennial herb 40-50 cm high with a horizontal rhizome. The rhizome is located at a depth of 3-6 cm from the soil surface. Leaves up to 50 cm wide, including 2, thyroid, finger-venated, palmate-lobed. The first leaf is larger than the second. Apical inflorescence. The scutellum has an average of 8-10, sometimes up to 30 flowers.
The diameter of the bifolia inflorescence is on average 6 cm (up to 8 cm). The flowers are white; 6 sepals, similar to petals; petals 6, flat. 6 free stamens; anthers open upwards with two flaps; one pistil; stigma rounded, flatly compressed from above; ovules are few in number, two-rowed.
Two-leaved fruits are juicy, dark blue, up to 2 cm in diameter, similar to small grapes. Ripen in July. Each berry contains 6-9 pear-shaped seeds. In August, the entire aboveground part dies off.
Two-leaved care
Two-leaved mesophyte - this means that it is adapted to living in sufficiently (but not excessively) moist soil. It grows best in shady or semi-shady places, such as under tree crowns. Grows well on loose fertile soils.
Two-leaved plant is large, but fragile. Its delicate leaves need protection from the wind and sufficient air humidity.
Two-leaved breeding
The two-leaved plant grows rather slowly. Propagated both by division and by seeds. When grown by seed, stratification is required over several months.
The plant blooms in the 4-5th year.
Two-leaved species
The genus includes three types:
- Gray's bifolia (Diphylleia grayi)
- Chinese bifolia (Diphylleia sinensis)
- Two-leaved corymbose (Diphylleia cymosa)
Why "transparent flower"?
An interesting feature of the two-leaved plant is that its flowers become translucent after rain. Therefore, abroad it is often called the Skeleton Flower. Also in America, the name of the two-leaved plant is common - Umbrella-leaf.
