Plants with globular inflorescences occupy a special place in the arsenal of landscape designers and gardeners. They have an amazing harmonizing effect on both individual compositions and the image of the garden as a whole. Perennials and annuals have their own stars with spherical inflorescences. So, the touching and at the same time very persistent gomphrene - an annual-dried flower - does not know any competitors. Easy to grow, it more than compensates for the effort spent on grooming and brings revitalization to flower gardens, pot gardens and winter bouquets.

In gomphrene spherical, the most common representative of the genus as an ornamental plant, all attention is riveted by the inflorescences. Spherical and not so small, they can grow up to 4 cm in diameter and invariably attract attention. Modest bushes up to 40 cm high are not pretentious, the greenery is not the brightest, but dense and attractive, often bluish. But during the flowering gomphren literally transforms. Small flowers in inflorescences are colored purple, red, violet, yellow or white. This summer bloom almost as tirelessly as garden ampels - from June until the arrival of frost.

In addition to the classic spherical homphrene, there is also a scattered, creeping, flexible shoots, and golden- flowered homphrene Hage, and various varieties and dwarf forms of hybrid homphrens.

Comfortable conditions for gomphrena

In order for this beauty to please with a large number of inflorescences-balls, she needs to be provided with the most brightly lit locations. Sunny, warm, open and south-facing areas are perfect for Gomfren. That is why it is recommended to plant it as spots on the lawn or on flower beds with other sun-loving summer gardens. Despite belonging to dried flowers, Gomfrena does not like the wind environment and it is better to protect it from active drafts.

The soil for this beauty is even easier to pick up. Any fertile and loose soils are suitable for Gomfren.

For a potted gomphrene, they choose the sunniest places and a high-quality, universal soil mixture. The optimum soil is considered, consisting of equal parts of sod, leafy soil, sand and peat.

Planting gomphrene

This culture does not like fresh organic matter and any organic fertilizers, even compost can be applied to the soil no less than a year before the planting of gomphrene. In fact, preparing for planting comes down to digging in soil, applying sand or full fertilizer to correct characteristics and carefully selecting weeds and stones.

The distance between the plants should be about 20-25 cm. It is not worth thickening the planting of gomphrene, as well as planting it closer than 20 cm from other garden plants. Planting is carried out in May or June, and individual small pits with abundant watering immediately after the procedure.

Irrigation for gomphrene

It is not for nothing that Gomfrena is considered a dried flower. It is content with minimal maintenance and is one of the most drought tolerant horticultural crops. True, if you want to achieve the most abundant flowering, during the hottest days, especially in July and August, it is better to try to support the plant with additional watering. In this case, the procedures will play the role of compensation for temperatures, and not for the absence of moisture.

Potted gomphrens need irrigation that is common for all annuals - maintaining light constant soil moisture. She will forgive you for the short-term drying out of the substrate, but it is better not to forget about systemic procedures.

Top dressing gomphrena spherical

If you have selected high-quality soil for this plant, then you can forget about feeding. Only on depleted soils will Gomfren need 2-3 dressings, which are carried out a month after planting or emergence of shoots, at the budding stage and a month after the beginning of flowering. If you are growing gomphrena for cutting, at the stage of active growth of seedlings, or within 1 month after planting in the soil in a permanent place, you can use complete mineral fertilizers to stimulate the most active growth as possible. Gomphrene does not tolerate organic matter, it can not be used either during planting or during growth.

For potted gomphren, top dressing should be more active, but still not as frequent as for the rest of the summer. They are introduced only in June and July, using complex universal mineral fertilizers 1 time in 2 weeks in a standard dosage.

Gomphrene pruning

This summer is not afraid of formation, but it is carried out only for potted gomfren. It is better to give the plant freedom and carry out cutting only for bouquets: in place of the cut inflorescence, new flower stalks will grow from the axils of the leaves.

For dry bouquets, the inflorescences are cut at different stages of opening, thus obtaining differently colored balls of different sizes. The inflorescences are most effective when the inflorescence reaches the size and stops development. But if you want to prepare gomfrena for bouquets, then try to remove the inflorescences before the lower scales in the inflorescence balls begin to brown.

Note: Gomphrene is a plant that is not only decorative, but also useful. It is actively used in folk medicine as a strengthening immunity and restoring remedy after illness.

Diseases and pests

Like most dried flowers, gomphrene practically does not get sick, and problems with its cultivation can arise only on damp soil. Pests are not afraid of her.

Reproduction of gomphrene

This summer can only be propagated by seeds. Gomfren can be grown both through seedlings and directly by sowing in open ground. But since sowing can only be carried out in June, it will be possible to enjoy the flowering of gomphrena in the middle lane only in the middle of autumn. That is why, for regions with severe winters, only the seedling method is recommended.

Seedlings are sown for seedlings in March or April. The substrate from among any fertile soil mixtures must first be disinfected with special preparations or scalded with boiling water. Sowing is carried out shallowly, densely, the crops are covered with foil. It is better not to create too hot conditions for gomphrena: 18-20 degrees of heat is enough for it. Be sure to take care of shading. The crops are transferred to a bright place immediately after the emergence of shoots, then the air temperature can be increased. Diving is carried out as it grows, 2 weeks after germination, using individual pots, large boxes or greenhouse soil for growing plants. Gomfrena is not afraid of transplanting, so it can be grown as you like. Gomphrene seedlings are afraid of waterlogging and should be watered sparingly.

Gomphrena can be transferred to open ground only after the threat of even light frosts disappears - at the end of May or June.
