The trampled path in the upper reaches of the Black Tisza whimsically winds its way, now going deep into a dark, harsh forest, now crossing with stormy, crystal clear streams, which are here and there blocked by fallen giant trees, now crossing small half-dark glades. After many hours of hard walking along the trail, we come out into a wide expanse of bright green Carpathian valleys. The mountain valley is illuminated by the rays of the generous and seemingly very close sun. How not to rest here, not to admire the fabulous beauty of the boundless blue distances!

As if guessing our thoughts, the guide offers to take a break. Immediately, a conversation is struck about the plant riches of this blessed land. Someone also recalls Michurin's “bread forecast”. Aged, but strong, like a Carpathian beech, our guide reacts vividly to these words.

More than half a million hectares are occupied by the Carpathian beech forests. You cannot remain calm when you are walking in a small protected area - an island of buchin in the Chinandaevsky forestry: giants two meters thick, with a smooth light gray, as if armored bark, cover the sun with their mighty crowns and rustle with branches at the height of a ten-story building. This protected 300-year-old forest is dark and cool even on the hottest summer days. According to the calculations of a local forestry scientist, about 90 thousand nuts can be harvested from one such tree. True, they are not that large: not much more than sunflower seeds (a hundred nuts weigh only 20-22 grams). But a hectare of beech forest yields from 2 to 10 million nuts. Calculate what the entire Carpathian harvest is, and there are also Crimean and Caucasian beech forests!

And again, there is a large list of benefits that can be obtained from a small beech nut and from the whole plant as a whole.

The first is oil, thousands of tons, no worse than Provence and nuts themselves, no worse than cedar ones.

The second is proteins, starch, sugar, valuable acids.

The third is a drink, delicious, satisfying, not inferior to cocoa.

Fourth - cake (protein feed for livestock).

Fifth - a hard nut shell (fuel).

Sixth - wood (used for finishing cabins, saloons, cabins, compartments on ships, airplanes, trains).

Seventh - tar and creosote extracted from beech wood (a remedy used for certain skin diseases).

There are eighth, ninth, tenth. Can you tell about everything?

Across the ocean there is a relative of our beech - American beech. It is close not only to the forest beech from the Carpathians, but also to the eastern one from the Caucasus, which, like its American relative, forms vast forests - buchiny.

In addition, there are many forms of beech created by man for decorative purposes or found in nature. Such is a beech with a spherical, pyramidal and weeping crown, with white-variegated, dark purple and dissected leaves. These shapes decorate our parks and streets.

Beech is a calm, even slow tree. Only when it reaches 45-50 years old, it begins to bloom and bear fruit. However, he has nowhere to rush, because the beech lives up to 300-400, and sometimes even 500 years. Trees rustle on the Carpathian, Caucasian and Crimean mountain slopes, first turning green in the 16th or 17th centuries. And next to it there is a young growth, whose "bread" will go to people of the XXI, XXII, XXIII centuries. Will our distant great-great-grandchildren appreciate his merits so highly?
