In addition, such early carrots have juicier, sweeter and larger fruits than with conventional sowing. And all this because it grows in early spring, when the soil is highly moistened. Moisture is very important for both seed germination and the growth of the root vegetables themselves. The result of such a sub-winter planting is friendly shoots and rapid growth of carrots. This winter sowing has one significant drawback: these root crops cannot be stored for a long time. But the pluses are on the face.

Many gardeners think that carrots will not sprout after winter frosts, and if they do come up on the first warm days, they will freeze even on cold nights. You don't have to worry about this - the sprouts will come out at the right time, and spring gardening troubles can be significantly reduced. Moreover, before winter, you can plant not only carrots, but also other vegetables.

Where to plant?

Before choosing a site for winter sowing of carrots, it is important to remember that they love loose soil. Therefore, the garden should be done where the land is lighter and more fertile. It is advisable that it be in a sunny place so that the snow melts from the garden as early as possible in spring. It is best to plant carrots in the garden before winter, and not scallops, so that in the spring the seeds are not washed away by melt water.

It is better to sow carrots after onions, potatoes, cabbage, cucumbers and tomatoes. After harvesting, all remaining weeds, various residues must be removed from the garden, and then the land must be plowed well. When plowing, you need to apply mineral fertilizers. Organic fertilizers (fresh manure) will not work, since after them carrots cannot be planted in this place for two years. The soil should be ready by mid-October.

When to plant carrots?

You need to sow carrots just before the frosts, on frozen soil. It is very difficult to name specific dates, since the climate in Russia is unpredictable. It is necessary to guess so that the seeds do not germinate before the onset of frost, because every year the cold comes in different ways. Sowing in October is very dangerous, because when the thaw comes, the seeds can germinate, and subsequent frosts will destroy them. Therefore, it is necessary to sow carrots by mid-November, but it is better to increase the seeding rate.

How to sow?

You need to sow carrots before winter with dry seeds (you do not need to soak and germinate them first), since such seeds will not germinate ahead of time. Carrot seeds are small, and you can use a special seeder to ensure accurate sowing.

For the winter, carrots need to be sown according to the following scheme: prepare grooves (1-2 cm deep), add seeds there, and cover them with dry warm earth. After that, lay a layer of peat or humus (about 2 cm) and slightly compact the soil on top. When the first snow falls, you need to scoop it up on the garden bed and press it with spruce branches.

In the spring, when the snow will melt, the spruce branches need to be removed. And as soon as the snow completely disappears from the garden, you need to install low arcs on it and cover them with a film or non-woven material. This will ripen the carrots even faster. Further care consists in loosening, weeding and thinning.
