4. Fragrant Miracle - Turmeric Tsedoaria

The flowering of turmeric (Curcuma zedoaria) can be called anything but standard. Actually, the flowers of this plant, which became famous primarily as a spice and little known as indoor decorative culture, are not visible. A spectacular inflorescence, crowning a peduncle with leaves of a strict geometric shape, conquers not only with its bright color, but also with the perfection of its shape. Turmeric blooms more reminiscent of lotuses than classic herbaceous perennials.

The flowering of turmeric is short-lived, but it is worth waiting for a whole year. In June, the plant produces powerful flower stalks that do not immediately reveal their beauty. But on the other hand, its colorful peaks will delight until the beginning of autumn.

Turmeric can rightfully be called an exotic plant. Also known as cytvar root, turmeric zedoaria is a unique member of the Ginger family, a perennial herb rich in dyes and essential oils in the rhizome. But in indoor culture, this plant is not grown at all as a potential source of spices. The tuberous rhizome produces short underground shoots; only a bunch of leaves and peduncles emerges from the rhizome. The basal leaves with a long stalk, reaching from 30 cm in length, are linear, with beautiful purple or red veins on a light green background, decorate turmeric regardless of the season.

The funnel-shaped apical inflorescence consists of 6-7 flowers, but they are not visible due to their location deep in the axils of the bracts. Powerful peduncles are crowned with a rather large and massive spike, at the bottom of which there are bright green leaves of a more rounded shape, turning into lanceolate-triangular upper brightly colored bracts. They form a brighter funnel at the top, although the entire inflorescence looks quite harmonious and whole. The transition from light green to bright pink or bright yellow seems surprisingly exotic.

  • Plant height: from 20 to 50 cm, peduncles sometimes stretch up to 80 cm.
  • The palette of colors: white, pink, purple and yellow light pastel colors of the apical inflorescences.

Turmeric is not an easy crop to grow, but the difficulty is mainly related to the correct dormancy period. This plant is able to adapt to both light and semi-shady places, perfectly tolerates room temperature during the active period of growth. For turmeric, it is desirable to maintain a high humidity.

After wilting of greenery and peduncles, the plants must be transferred to a dry period of dormancy, with the desired removal of the rhizome from the pot and storage at a temperature of 15-18 degrees in a dark place. Planting in soil and transferring to heat activates the beginning of new growth, but with watering it is better to wait until signs of active development appear. Turmeric will need top dressing only during the period of active growth and the beginning of flowering, and the plant is watered carefully, avoiding overflow and drought. Otherwise, turmeric won't be a hassle.

The tsitvary root is propagated very simply by dividing the rhizome (the plant actively forms daughter plants).
