4. Leptotes

This orchid belongs to the fashionable "storytellers", i.e. species whose flowers resemble various creatures and animals. True, it is rather difficult to determine whether the flowers of the leptotes look like fabulous men, fairies or birds.

Leptotes are medium-sized orchids up to 15 cm high, they nevertheless retain the title of one of the most graceful orchids that can be grown indoors. It is an epiphytic sympodial orchid that does not form a pseudobulb. The leaves are cylindrical, developing one of the stems thickened at the bottom.

On squat short peduncles of leptotes, from 1 to 5 flowers open. The diameter of the flowers is up to 5 cm, but against the background of a dwarf bush, they seem huge. Pointed white sepals are combined with narrow, with a rounded edge, slightly curling petals of the corolla and a three-lobed lip, raised on the sides, of a brighter - purple - color.

The flowering period of this orchid covers only a month (each flower lasts up to 10 days). Flowering traditionally occurs at the end of winter.

Leptotes are best grown on blocks or in baskets, without transplanting.

Unlike many indoor orchids, Leptotes will not give up outdoor space in summer. Throughout the year, he needs diffused bright lighting and daylight hours lasting at least 10 hours.

There are two dormant periods in the development of the plant - after flowering and before flowering, when watering is severely limited for the orchid. Top dressing is carried out in the summer, in reduced doses. Watering even during the dormant period is carried out after the substrate has completely dried. The air humidity should be very high.

The temperature regime is restrained. In winter, the air temperature should not drop below 18 degrees. And in the summer, this orchid will put up with any indicators from 14 to 25 degrees. The greater the difference between day and night temperatures, the better.
