Iris reminds me of my childhood, as my grandmother had many varieties of iris in her garden. And remembering my childhood, I realized that the iris had completely disappeared from our flower beds. Taking into account the drought resistance of irises, their insufficient use in the flower decoration of southern cities is completely unjustified.

Due to the majesty and originality of the flower structure, even wild-growing irises can take a worthy place among the leading perennials. Iris can be used to create colorful flower spots where other, more demanding plants feel oppressed. The range of use of irises is quite wide - from single plantings in rocky gardens and combinations with other perennials in mixborders to large uniform plantings in flower beds, ridges, borders, group clumps on the lawn. In rocky gardens, mostly low and compact plants are planted. Planting a plant among the stones makes it possible to highlight the beauty of each individual plant.
For borders, mainly low-growing species and varieties are used. The property of irises to create a strict line, especially at a young age, before they have had time to grow, makes them one of the best components of floral design. The color of the flowers in this case plays an essential role. It should be solid and emphasize the line of the border. For this, planting must be carried out with a homogeneous pure-grade material.

In mixborders, iris goes well with perennial poppies, lupines, phloxes, peonies, delphiniums and other perennials. Considering that after flowering, iris does not lose its decorative effect due to its beautiful leaves that remain until the end of the growing season, it is planted mainly in front of those plants that lose their decorative effect in the second half of summer (poppy, lupine). To preserve a neat appearance of iris plantings until autumn, it is enough just to remove wilted flowers and peduncles.
In a uniform planting, irises should create an array, densely covering the ground, which is achieved by a certain density of standing and an abundance of plants in planting. Therefore, it is necessary to approach very strictly to the norms of planting per 1m², depending on the planting material. The range of planted plants must be carefully selected taking into account their height, flowering time and color, avoiding variegation and disharmony. A great advantage of irises is their early flowering (May), when there is still no lush flowering of cannes, phlox, lilies and other perennials that bloom only in the middle or late summer. Although iris blooms are relatively short-lived (about a month), the rich color palette that creates the impression of a rainbow leaves a vivid impression.

Irises can be an excellent cut material, provided the bouquets are not overwhelmed. The bouquet is made taking into account the original bizarre structure of the flower, so that each flower is freely visible and that the color of the flowers that make up the bouquet is harmoniously combined. The flower-bearing stems of the iris are cut at the beginning of the second flower, the rest of the buds open in the water. Flowers cut in bud state are excellent for long-distance transportation.
