2. Geranium blood red
One of the most famous representatives of genuine garden geraniums, hardy, durable, surprisingly plastic in requirements, blood-red geranium is an inimitable plant. It is beautiful both in bloom and when the leaves remain the main decoration of the plant. Decorativeness throughout the season with its complete undemandingness - these are the reasons why this species has become legendary.
Despite the fact that the blood-red geranium became famous for the change in the autumn color of the leaves to a bloody and delicate, lilac-pink shade of the color of the flowers, it has many varieties that allow you to choose brighter colors. The favorite of many gardeners is the magnificent undersized geranium "Nana" that forms a dense cushion in the bush ; snow-white, with light leaves that change color to yellow in the fall, blood-red geranium of the Album variety, the light pink Vision variety and the soft pink Compactum.
They differ not only in the shade of flowers, but also in the color of summer leaves - sometimes bright green, sometimes emerald. Varietal plants in blood-red geraniums are preferable because of the extended flowering period: if the base plant starts only in June, then varietal blood-red geraniums delight in May and do not leave the stage at the end of summer.
Blood-red geranium is one of the most powerful geraniums with a long and knobby rhizome and very beautiful rounded bushes. A more austere shape and height up to 60 cm with the possibility of choosing dwarf varieties allow you to place noble accents, and not just create a bright background.
Deeply dissected, with linear-lanceolate lobules, rounded in general shape, the leaves of this geranium sit on densely pubescent petioles. In the mass of leaves, almost no stems are visible, crowned with loose inflorescences or single, lilac-pink-red, large, up to 4 cm in diameter flowers.
The striking uniformity of the distribution of flowers across the bush creates the effect of calico patterns. Starting in late spring, this geranium blooms profusely until August and often self-seeds, which allows it to spread and fill the soil without replanting new bushes.
The stable, unchanging, almost not suffering from bad weather, decorativeness of this long-lasting geranium is a trait that many competitors can envy. Blood-red geranium wakes up very early, but the main decoration of spring flower beds is its brownish overwintered leaves, which further emphasize the light young greenery.
The bloom highlights the beauty of the leaf texture in the young, shining bushes, and by fall, when the petioles, stems and lower leaves begin to turn red, a striking contrast is created with the still vibrant green at the top of the bushes.
Growth conditions and care for blood-red geraniums
It is not by chance that blood-red geranium has become one of the exemplary plants for decorating flower beds. In the front garden, it can be grown both as a curb crop, as a partner perennial, and as one of the main stars.
She is content with the standard conditions for all geraniums - fertile soil with good water permeability, partial shade or sunny place and modest care. In fact, it boils down only to weeding in early spring and the removal of faded shoots.
