The word phlox, which comes from the Greek language, means flame. This is the name of an unpretentious and familiar plant - a flame. Of more than 85 species of phlox, Drummond is the only one-year-old, therefore it is also often called an annual phlox.
Drummond's phlox is native to the southern states of the United States, introduced to Europe in 1835 by the Scottish botanist Thomas Drummond. Annual phlox is in no way inferior to perennial species.
Phlox Drummondii (Phlox drummondii) has a bright color, early and fairly long blooms. Low-growing varieties (10-15cm) are used for gardens and rock gardens. Medium-sized (20-30cm) are used for planting in curbs and flower beds. Tall ones (40-50cm) are planted in flower beds and used for cutting.
Drummond's various forms and varieties of phlox differ not only in height, but also in shape, size, color of bushes and flowers.
The corolla of flowers of annual phlox are of two types: wheel-shaped and star-shaped. Wheel shapes are more suitable for planting in groups. Star-shaped - in alpine slides or flower beds.
Growing Drummond Phlox
Growing Drummond phlox is possible with seeds or seedlings.
Planting seedlings of annual phlox
Drummond phlox seeds should be planted in early March in a room with a temperature no higher than + 22 °. Before sprouting, the container with the sown seeds must be covered with foil. Shoots appear in 8-12 days.
After germination, annual phlox should be provided with good lighting and moderate soil moisture to prevent stretching and the formation of rot (blackleg).
After the appearance of the real first leaf, the seedlings dive. After the onset of warm weather, seedlings are planted in flower beds or pots. When grown by seedlings, the annual phlox will bloom in June.
Planting Drummond phlox seeds in open ground
In the open field, annual phlox seeds are planted after the soil warms up enough (in April-March). With this method of planting, flowering occurs later, in July. Plant several seeds in separate holes.
It is possible to plant Drummond phlox before winter, but with this method, the plant often dies from recurrent frosts, starting to germinate during the thaw period. Therefore, it makes sense to provide for a shelter (with snow or covering material) during winter sowing, and plant an annual phlox before winter as late as possible.
Drummond phlox care
Phlox Drummond is undemanding to the composition of the soil, but the fertile and light soil contributes to better growth and flowering. It is not recommended to apply manure as a fertilizer; it increases the vegetative mass and negatively affects flowering. Waterlogged and shady areas are also not suitable for phlox. Open areas with light soil are most suitable.
With regular loosening and watering of the land, Drummond's phlox will bloom until late autumn, firmly enduring rain and light frost.
During the summer, the plant should be fed 2-3 times with complex mineral fertilizer. Such feeding will only improve the appearance of the plant.
Seeds should only be harvested from the finest flowers. After the boxes turn yellow, tear them off and dry in paper bags.
Drummond's phlox will look attractive longer if wilted buds are removed in time.
