Life in the forest comes to a standstill in short December days. The paths are covered with snow, and the juniper bushes are covered with a snow blanket over their heads. The taller ones are as beautiful as the fir trees and sometimes serve as a Christmas tree too. This half-tree-half-shrub is very useful.

The essential oil secreted by the needles and fruits of the juniper has a pronounced bactericidal effect. In North America, the Indians of Colorado transferred patients with severe forms of tuberculosis to juniper thickets, because they believed that this method of treatment was most effective. Juniper purifies the air in the suburbs of large cities. During plague epidemics, the premises were fumigated with lit juniper branches, and the threads that were used to sew up wounds were sterilized with oil. And if barrels for pickles are steamed with juniper branches, then pickles, mushrooms, cabbage will not spoil for a long time.

In the mountains of Tajikistan, a juniper grows, which the locals call archa. A ritual is associated with it, similar to those that are known among many peoples as "veneration of the Maypole." In early spring, Tajik youths, having completed a cleansing ablution, went to the mountains and chose a juniper tree. Wine and oil were sprinkled on it, under it they ate the bread and fruits brought with them, after which the tree was cut off and carried to the village. There they were greeted with music and singing.
The tree was set on a stone near the river, and a cheerful holiday began - with dancing and the sacrifice of a goat. After the holiday, the villagers took a general bath in the river. Each took a branch of a ceremonial tree and carried it home. The women poured some of the branches with water and wine and put them on the fire, and one branch was sprinkled with flour and hung to the ceiling, where it hung for a whole year until the next holiday. Maypole in the form of juniper was a symbol of abundance.

The juniper is especially beautiful on the island of Muhu in Estonia. In general, the beauty on this island is fabulous. Ice Age gray boulders are scattered throughout the island in chaotic disarray. Between them pyramidal dark green junipers dance in circles, many of them taller than a person. At their foot there are glades covered with emerald green grass. In this grass bloom in small groups of yellow primroses, lilac lilacs, pink cat paws, white lilies of the valley and many other flowers. And junipers guard this reserved beauty with their spiky branches. No one else is around, only the sea is rustling nearby. Who will guard and guard the juniper?
