2. Climbing roses
Among the many varieties, forms and varieties of the garden queen, climbing roses have always occupied a special place. Large, fast-growing, requiring careful care in regions with severe winters, they most of all correspond to the title of fabulous vines. After all, the luxurious bloom of climbing roses turns them into soaring clouds.
Climbing representatives of the genus Rosa are divided into two categories - ramblers and climbers.
Real climbing or curly roses or ramblers (Rambler) are roses with very long, thin and flexible, creeping or rising shoots. Dense foliage, height from 1.5 to 5 m, semi-double, double or simple small flowers up to 3 to 4 cm in diameter, collected in inflorescences are the main advantages of ramblers. They bloom for about a month in early summer, delighting with inflorescences along the entire length of last year's branches. But such climbing roses have almost no strong aroma and bloom once.
Climbing hybrids and bud mutations of large-flowered spray roses are large-flowered climbing roses, or Climber, plants with a completely different character. Shoots from 2 to 4 m long are very powerful, long, strong, but not flexible. Unlike ramblers, climbers can boast of very large flowers, from 4 cm in diameter, collected in much more modest inflorescences. They are fragrant and most often capable of re-blooming, disease-resistant, but much more difficult to care for.
- Vine height: from 1.5 to more than 5 m depending on the variety
- Creeper flowering period: summer and early autumn, once or in several waves
In growing climbing roses, location is key. Both bright lighting and access to fresh air are important for plants. Climbing roses are placed in western and southern locations, placing the roses so that the crown is well ventilated, but protecting the plants from cold winds. The soil for climbing roses should be of high quality, nutritious, loose. Most suitable for roses are moisture-consuming, fertile heavy loams. The planting site is prepared in advance. There should be at least 50 cm of free space from the support or objects in the gardening of which a climbing rose is used to the plant itself.
Caring for climbing roses is much easier than for bush princesses. Watering for them is rarely carried out during a prolonged drought. But it must be abundant, soak the soil to the full depth of the roots. Top dressing is applied several times - in early spring, at the stage of budding and flowering. Timely removal of wilting flowers and pruning, depending on the type of flowering, along with mulching, loosening the soil and carefully monitoring the condition of foliage and shoots will help keep bushes healthy and notice signs of problems in the early stages. In the middle lane, climbing roses are covered using air-dry methods.
Climbing roses are propagated mainly by cuttings. The easiest option is to root green cuttings in the second half of summer.
Climbing roses are regal, luxurious tools in the hands of landscape designers. In nobility, beauty, abundant flowering, not a single liana can compete with them. They are appropriate both in classic landscaping styles and in modern trends. There is no garden in which such a rose would not fit and where it would not become the best blooming decoration.
Climbing roses are used in the garden for a variety of purposes. They will cope with the task of landscaping walls and facades, are able to decorate gazebos and pavilions, grow well on pergolas and columns, and are suitable for creating screens and fences. A very popular option is to grow climbing roses on separate curly supports - arches, pyramids, columns.
