6. Turtle-like pumpkin varieties
We owe the emergence of this unique variety to the famous American breeder Luther Burbank, as a result of whose efforts a stable line of turban gourds was obtained from the seeds of the Chilean progenitor.
This variety has long been known as the most beautiful and most useless pumpkin. Indeed, with such a spectacular appearance, there was a tasteless watery pulp inside, not very suitable for eating. But over time, in the process of selection work, its taste has been improved. And today both purely decorative and table varieties can be found on sale.
To figure out who is who, it is better to focus not only on the description of seed producers, but also on the size of the fruit, since small pumpkins are usually bitter (for example, the "Fungus" variety), and they are not used in cooking. But the larger varieties (weighing 4-5 kg) are usually very tasty. On sale they are often found under the names "Little Red Riding Hood", "Turban" or "Turkish turban".
The use of turban pumpkin varieties in cooking
The pulp of these varieties, completely devoid of fibers characteristic of many species, is rather sweet, with a nutty flavor and vaguely resembles the most delicious nutmeg varieties. It is quite possible to use it raw in salads or on its own "like an apple".
Outwardly, the "Turkish turban" is a real handsome man and is really similar to an oriental headdress. Thanks to its characteristic shape, the turban seems to be created in order to be used as an original natural tureen.
Features of growing pumpkin "Turkish turban"
Fancy fruits, which seem to consist of two parts, have a cheerful variegated color of the range of autumn leaves. The upper part is usually dominated by orange color, but the convex base is painted with many bright strokes and spots.
In our conditions, the "Turkish turban" proved to be the most cold-resistant, drought-resistant and disease-resistant pumpkin. In the garden, the plants are relatively compact and the length of the lash does not exceed three meters. In addition, early maturity is also characteristic of the variety, and ready-made variegated pumpkins can be harvested after 90 days.
And at the end of the list, I would also like to draw your attention to the original pumpkin with an interesting name " Finger Fruit", which is also found on sale under the name "Crown".
The fruits of this variety are conditionally edible, because if desired, they can be eaten in the summer, using young "stars" instead of zucchini. But in winter, their pulp dries out rather quickly, and small fancy pumpkins can decorate the kitchen interior for more than one year or serve as a Christmas tree toy.
