In a number of previous posts on our website, we talked about dwarf (columnar) apple trees. They take up little space in the garden, start bearing fruit early, and it is much easier to harvest. Is it possible to grow dwarf cherries and are there such varieties?

Due to the intensification of gardening, botanists have long thought about how to breed similar varieties of cherries. And such targeted selection is being carried out. However, unlike apples and pears, cherries (like almost all stone fruits) are vigorous plants. Then the scientists turned their eyes to the cherry. It is not high (up to 3 m), but the taste of the fruit turned out to be somewhat different.

Attempts were made to create hybrids of sweet cherry and steppe cherry, however, they did not give the desired results. The sign of weakness is recessive and this caused certain difficulties. Nevertheless, breeders managed to create a number of promising undersized and medium-sized sweet cherries with a spreading or weeping crown (varieties Stark Hardy Giant, Weeping, Original, Plakuchaya).

With the help of radiation, Canadian scientists obtained low-growing clones of the Compact Lambert and Compact Stella varieties. In the CIS, low-growing clones of the Valeria variety are a successful experience in this direction, but they are not characterized by winter hardiness.

Clonal rootstocks are much better results in this regard. They are obtained by propagation by part of an adult plant, and special uniform forms or clones are used.

Clonal rootstocks give a noticeable reduction in tree height (up to 30%). For Russia, the most successful was the group of rootstocks: low-growing - VSL-1 and 2, and medium-sized - VTs-13, L-2, LC-52, etc. (they are included in the State Register of the Russian Federation). Many gardeners are trying to breed fashionable foreign novelties (in France Edabriz, Germany Weiroot 158, in a number of European countries and the USA - Gisela 5). However, the soil and climate in Russia and the CIS varies in a very wide range and in different regions different rootstocks in different regions behave differently. It takes a lot of trial and practice.

One of the best low-growing rootstocks for dwarf cherries was created by the Russian Experimental Gardening Station - VSL-2. This is a small tree (up to 2.5 m), easily propagates by cuttings and does not form shoots. The tree that forms early enters the fruiting period, and its root system can withstand low soil temperatures.

Proper crown formation is of great importance when growing dwarf cherries. Most often it is cupped, in the form of a hedge, palmette, or as a spindle. At the same time, different techniques are used: shortening the tops of the shoots, bending and thinning the branches, and also using chemical branching regulators.

Once the tree has begun to bear fruit, regulate pruning begins. It is carried out in the spring, when the tops of the shoots are shortened, and the crown is thinned out in the summer. Strong pruning slightly reduces the yield, but the quality of the fruit is higher. It is very important to strike a balance between the growth of shoots and the formation of fruit-bearing wood.

The fusiform crown is also widespread. It is shaped like a Christmas tree with a central conductor and lateral branches extending from it at angles of up to 90 degrees. At the same time, they try to make the lower branches the longest. They try to keep the height of the trees at the level of 4-5 meters. However, such an operation is laborious and requires certain qualifications. At first, you can get by with the formation of a rounded crown.

In Ukraine, a bushy shape of the cherry crown has recently been bred. In the spring, a strong shortening of the central conductor is carried out (up to 20 cm), and in the summer period of all shoots (up to 45 cm). In this case, unnecessary branches are removed.

Some practical tips for cherry seedlings. It is desirable that when buying seedlings in the fall, they do not have foliage. The foliage of a dug out seedling wastes moisture unproductively. When the seedling has dropped the foliage, this means that the life processes are completed and the tree is ready for winter. The optimal planting dates are in late September - early October.

So that cherries are not empty flowers, it is better to pair them. As a rule, all varieties are self-fertile or only partially self-fertile and require a pollinator. It is better to immediately buy two seedlings and different varieties at once. In this case, pollination is guaranteed.
