Today there are so many varieties and hybrids of miniature cherry tomatoes that it is easy to get lost in them. Novice gardeners can be confused by the huge number of colors of these tomatoes. But both beginners and experienced gardeners want to try more and more new varieties every year. During our considerable experience in gardening, we have tested many varieties of mini-tomatoes of all colors of the rainbow. And we would like to share our observations with the readers by assigning grades to grades on a five-point system. Today's article will focus on cherry varieties that have yellow and red fruit colors.

Varieties and hybrids of red cherry tomatoes

Red is the classic color of tomatoes, and many prefer red-fruited varieties to exotic ones, so that the tomato, as they say, looks like a tomato. Traditional red tomatoes are always appropriate in salads and appetizers on the festive table and will not cause unnecessary questions from guests. The classics are also often chosen by elderly people who are conservative.

Provitamin A (beta-carotene) is responsible for the red color of tomatoes, from which it follows that red cherry tomatoes are rich in this useful substance to the greatest extent. In addition, red tomatoes are high in vitamin C, niacin and folic acid. And in terms of the content of lycopene, which is useful for many diseases, including used for the prevention of oncological diseases in men, red tomatoes are second only to dark-colored varieties.

Tomato "Sweet Cherry"

Hybrid "Sweet Cherry" ("Sweet Cherry") fully lives up to its telling name. In our beds, this mini-tomato turned out to be the sweetest of all red-fruited varieties. At the same time, there are no notes of exotic fruits in its taste, as is the case with variegatedly colored varieties, but it is also difficult to call it a classic tomato.

I would characterize the sweet cherry hybrid flavor as fresh, sweet, delicate and very pleasant. When you eat tomatoes straight from the bush, it can be difficult to tear yourself away from them.

The size of the fruits is medium and small, while the bulk of the tomatoes is slightly larger than a large cherry, and a separate trifle closer to the end of the brush is about the size of a medium-sized currant.

The hybrid belongs to the early maturing, and on our site it ripens one of the very first, starting to bloom even in seedling age. The appearance of sweet cherry tomato deserves a separate description. Its perfectly smooth, rounded berries resemble pearls in an unripe state, and when the fruits turn red, they look like beads. In addition, the hybrid has neat twisted stalks and delicate feathery foliage that does not have sharp corners, like most other varieties.

This tomato hybrid belongs to indeterminate and needs pinching and garter. We usually form it into one or two stems. The only drawback of the hybrid is the average yield. But this is not due to reduced fertility, but to the small size of the fruits, as a result of which the yield is usually less than that of larger cherry cherries.

I would give Sweet Cherry a 5 for the sweetest candy taste and totally charming appearance.

Note: last year we also planted the Round Dance cherry tomato variety in our garden. I can't say for sure, but, as it seemed to us, based on the characteristic shape of the foliage, taste and shape of the fruit, under this name is also sold a hybrid "Sweet Cherry". But even if we are wrong, and this is a truly independent variety, the Round Dance cherry also deserves the highest praise.

Tomato "Octopus Cherry"

"Octopus Cherry" - another hybrid with a telling name. If most of the indeterminate varieties of cherry tomatoes need to be formed into one or two trunks, then this hybrid can have many fruiting branches, thereby resembling a multi-segmented octopus.

The leaf of this tomato is a little atypical - rich green, narrower and heavily jagged (jagged) at the edges. Regularly shaped brushes, as a rule, consist of 10-15 rounded, dense tomatoes. The color is bright red when ripe and pale green, almost white when tied.

The fruits are relatively large in size and are close to cocktail varieties in weight of 35 grams. The taste of tomatoes is sweetish with a slight sourness, close to the classic tomato.

A distinctive feature of the hybrid can also be called resistance to cracking and a long fresh shelf life. The berries also stick well on a branch, so you can cut off whole brushes, waiting for the last tomatoes to ripen.

The ripening period of the hybrid is average. Another name for the tomato "Octopus Cherry" is "Tomato tree", but this does not mean at all that the bushes do not need to be formed at all. "Octopus Cherry" has an indomitable growth force, but the more trunks you leave, the more intensive nutrition the bush will need to receive. In this case, the ripening of the fruits becomes significantly extended.

The "tomato tree" will feel the best in the greenhouse, in this case there is a chance to wait for the maximum number of fruits to ripen. On our site, the bush was grown in open ground and formed into 3 trunks. The harvest was rich, but not all tomatoes had time to ripen before the fall.

The tomato hybrid "Sprut Cherry", in my opinion, deserves a "4" point. The rating is lowered based on the need for too frequent pinching and the presence of a noticeable sourness in the taste.

Tomato "Geranium Kiss"

Geranium Kiss is a very unusual variety. Fruits are medium in size for cherry, ribbed with a distinct spout at the end, so sharp that you can literally prick about it. Fruit color is rich orange-red. The taste is excellent, classic tomato with a fruity aftertaste. Due to its dense pulp, the variety tolerates transportation well and is well stored.

In an unripe form, it can have greenish dense blotches that distort the taste, so it is important to wait until the tomatoes are fully ripe. The brush is abundant, loose - up to several dozen fruits, it makes sense to form it into one not very high trunk with several brushes.

At our site, "Geranium Kiss" was distinguished by high yield and increased resistance to fungal diseases. Tomato showed itself very well in salting due to its size and characteristic shape with a spout; it was more convenient to eat it than other varieties.

It is also worth noting that under this name there are two varieties of tomatoes, similar only to the characteristic shape of the fruit - elongated, with a very sharp nose. But otherwise these varieties are different. One of them is a classic tomato with compact bushes and 50 grams of fruit.

The other belongs to the cherry type, the bush is indeterminate, the fruits are in large clusters, have a small size - up to 15 grams. In our garden, we grew the second option. But which of them refers to the real "Kiss of the Geranium", and what the true name of the other - is still a mystery.

Opinions differed in our family regarding the taste of cherry tomato “Geranium Kiss”, lovers of classic tomatoes described it as very tasty, but to me the taste of the fruit did not seem particularly remarkable. But, on the whole, I believe that the variety deserves a “4” grade with a slight minus.

Tomato "Cherry Ira"

"Cherry Ira" is one of the most popular hybrids of recent years. The fruits of "Cherry Ira" are slightly elongated, at the onset of full maturity they acquire a bright red color, the cluster is uniform, the average berry weight is 15 grams.

When I was just picking candidates for planting next season among the tomatoes, reviews of Cherry Ira tomatoes were controversial: someone called them very sweet - “like candy”, and some gardeners noted disappointment in the taste of this tomato. Unfortunately, in my case, the Cherry Ira tomatoes also had a completely inexpressive taste.

Of the features they also can be noted elastic, fleshy pulp and dense peel. Therefore, I would classify this variety, rather, as an industrial one. For me, the too thick skin of tomatoes is a negative quality that interrupts the main taste of the fruit, but some gardeners may regard this feature as positive. For example, thick-skinned cherries are easy to transport over long distances, they crack less, have an increased keeping quality and are well suited for conservation.

Given the not too bright taste, for homemade preparations, I would recommend using the Cherry Ira hybrid not in salting, but for pickling, since the decisive role in this is given to the taste of the marinade, and not the sweetness of the tomatoes themselves. Their dense flesh makes them suitable for pizza making and grilling.

In my opinion, the Cherry Ira tomato hybrid deserves only a "3" point. The decisive factors for such a low rating for me were the insipid, only slightly sweet taste and too thick skin. Another disadvantage is also the high cost of seeds.

Cherry red tomato

This tomato variety cannot be classified as a novelty, since it was obtained by Russian breeders in the early 90s. And in 1997 it was introduced into the State Register as recommended for growing in open ground or in a greenhouse.

The cherry red tomato brushes are very long and beautiful; with good care, one brush can contain up to 35 tomatoes, but they ripen unevenly. The skin is very thin and the fruits do not tolerate transportation well and constantly crack from any external factors. Being on a bush (rain, extreme heat, insufficient or too abundant watering), they turn sour and become completely unpleasant to the taste.

As for the gustatory qualities of this variety as a whole, in our family “Red Cherry” was not appreciated at all. The taste of this variety is completely inexpressive, not sour, not sweet, but simply speaking - "none".

The bushes of "Cherry red" were distinguished by a record yield, they tied beautiful even classic tassels, consisting of bright attractive tomatoes, which seemed to be asking for a mouthful. But due to the presence of truly delicious varieties of cherry tomatoes in the beds, no one ate them here. Tomatoes stood untouched until autumn, "from head to toe" covered with a huge amount of fruit to the envy of their neighbors, who often mistook them from afar for some kind of exotic flowers.

In our unanimous opinion, the Cherry Krasnaya tomato variety deserves an assessment of no higher than a “two”. But I will not be so categorical, because, for sure, this variety also has a lot of fans, therefore, due to the high yield, I give this cherry a solid "3".

Varieties and hybrids of yellow cherry tomatoes

Yellow cherries are attractive and interesting not only for lovers of something unusual. Yellow-fruited varieties are famous for their high content of myocin, a substance that helps to strengthen the walls of blood vessels and has antioxidant properties. In addition, the fruits contain a lot of carotene and B vitamins.

Yellow tomatoes are allowed to be consumed by people prone to allergic reactions and nursing mothers. Yellow-fruited varieties are also indicated for those who suffer from diseases of the gastrointestinal tract, since tomatoes improve motor skills, and yellow tomatoes do not cause heartburn, unlike red ones.

Tomato "Honey Drop"

"Honey drop" is a long-known and popular variety of yellow cherry tomatoes. The shape of the fruit is described as teardrop-shaped, but, in my opinion, looks more like a light bulb or a tiny pear of an appetizing bright yellow color. Because of its attractive appearance, many gardeners grow the Honey Drop as an ornamental plant.

The taste of the fruit can indeed be called very sweet, "honey", but without the fruity notes characteristic of other cherry tomatoes. The plant forms large fruits when it is formed in 1-2 stems. Strong, classic brushes, 8-16 bulbs each.

"Honey Drop" is not stored very well - when mature, the fruit becomes soft to the touch. The variety is early, it ripens unevenly, so cutting it off with a whole brush is unlikely to work. Pear tomatoes do not hang on the brush for a long time and often fall off if they are not picked in time. A distinctive feature of the variety is also a characteristic leaf, atypical for tomatoes, but more like a potato. Therefore, the "Honey Drop" is easy to distinguish from other cherry trees in seedling age.

In my opinion, "Honey Drop" is one of the tastiest and sweetest yellow-fruited varieties of cherry tomatoes, among other things, with an attractive appearance. Therefore, bulb tomatoes deserve a score of "5" points.

Ildi tomato

Tomato "ildi", at first glance, very similar to the "Honey Drops", reduced in size. The size of the fruit is two times smaller than that of "Honey Drop", they are less like a small pear, and more close to a drop. When a bush is formed into one stem, the variety is capable of producing truly impressive brushes of more than a hundred fruits in one brush.

During the flowering period, for a high-quality setting, it is advisable not to leave more than 3 brushes on the bush, otherwise the tomato may not have enough strength, and the flowers, and the ovaries themselves, will fall off. Huge panicle brushes with ripening fruits look very aesthetically pleasing. But to capture the entire brush at the peak of full maturity will not work - the fruiting is very stretched, one brush can gradually set the fruits all summer.

Unlike "Honey Drop" the leaves have no resemblance to potato leaves, but, on the contrary, they are lighter, light green, small and thin. The taste of these cherry tomatoes is also very pleasant and sweet, good to eat fresh from the bush. With the onset of autumn, the taste of tomatoes deteriorates and many of the fruits sour inside, so this variety is suitable only for summer consumption, but it deserves a "4" in my rating.

Tomato "Super Snow White"

Tomato cherry "Super Snow" usually attributed to the varieties "white" cherry. But, as you know, breeders have not yet received really white tomatoes, so I would still classify this variety as yellow. The color of the fruit of Super Snow White is not bright yellow, but rather lemon, and the more ripe the fruit, the more bleached it becomes.

The shape of the tomatoes is round, even, size, by the standards of cherry, medium. A classic brush, as a rule, consists of 10-15 tomatoes. The taste is fruity, very sweet, completely without sourness and almost does not resemble the typical tomato. It is mainly intended for fresh consumption.

Tomatoes are stored and transported very poorly, since in the phase of full ripeness they are very soft, with a thin and fragile skin. This is also associated with the tendency of the fruit to crack under the influence of external factors. It is very important not to overdo the tomatoes on the bush, as they can crack and sour, in addition, overripe fruits easily crumble.

If you do not take into account the aforementioned disadvantages as decisive, then I would put the “Super Snow White” tomato variety “four with a minus”, taking into account the pleasant fruity taste and original colors.

Tomato "Crazy Berries"

"Crazy Berries" is a rather rare tomato variety, its seeds can only be purchased from collectors. Seed sellers present this variety as a gimmick with extraordinary taste and crazy yields. To be honest, until the very last moment I had no doubts whether Crazy Cherry was just another name for the above-described Ildi variety. But it turned out to be a completely independent variety.

Like "Ildi", this tomato forms giant clusters, the size of its fruit is small, and their shape is drop-shaped. But that's where the similarities end. Unlike "Ildi", these tomatoes have a characteristic small spout, and their color, even when fully ripe, remains pale yellow with small greenish areas.

As for the description, the seller really did not cheat with the crazy yield of tomatoes. But how to understand the characteristic "crazy taste" - for me remained a mystery. In terms of taste, these cherry tomatoes really have a significant difference from other varieties, but rather in a negative sense.

Even in their most mature form, their taste is distinguished by a predominance of acid and an almost complete absence of sweetness. But it is also impossible to call tomatoes unpleasant or completely inedible, rather they are bland with sourness. In the summer we practically did not eat the peculiar "Crazy Cherries", spoiled by the presence of super-sweet varieties.

With the onset of autumn, when the summer heat became less and less, on the bushes of most sweet varieties of cherry tomatoes, berries that disappeared and a little sour inside began to come across. Therefore, we threw away all the cherry tomatoes that were removed in mid-October, leaving only the "Crazy Berries", which, surprisingly, retained their peculiar taste unchanged. Not a single missing fruit was found among them. Thus, this variety has proven itself very well in autumn salads.

Honestly, if it were not for the unexpected property of the variety to retain its taste until late autumn, I would give Crazy Berries a confident rating of “2”, despite its high yield. But given that the ability is stored for a long time, I still give these tomatoes a solid three.
