In July, with the arrival of real heat and prolonged droughts, not only garden plants but also gardeners themselves are seriously tested. You can only dream of a vacation in the middle of summer! Flower gardens, mixborders, lawns and potted gardens are completely dependent on the quality of care. And despite the fact that attention is almost completely switched to a productive garden, and ornamental plants should not be forgotten. Indeed, for many crops, it is July that is a critical month for laying flowering buds for the next season, determining the duration or stimulating the second wave of flowering.

All focus is on maintaining comfortable humidity

Watering in July is critical for the majority of flowering garden plants. For crops in flower gardens and in flower beds (and even for the most drought-resistant plants on alpine hills), the combination of heat and prolonged drought can significantly reduce flowering and affect the beauty of the inflorescences, and their size, and quantity.

Maintain soil moisture that is comfortable for plants, irrigate at least once a week, and preferably with a frequency of 3 days for all flowering and moisture-loving crops. This will prevent drought from depleting the plants, causing leaves to turn yellow and stop flowering, and providing at least a slight moisture in the soil in the deeper layers.

Pay attention to the procedure itself: do not spray the leaves (especially on roses), water carefully and soak the soil deeply. Do not use cold water and irrigate in the sun - only in the evenings or early in the morning. Plants that love sprinkling should also be sprayed in the evenings in July.

Lawns also need a slightly different approach in July: they also cannot be watered superficially this month, taking care that moisture deeply saturates the soil.

Correct feeding

Even if you grow plants for cutting or for shrubs and perennials that have completed flowering, you need to carry out mandatory feeding, do not forget about reasonable control of the amount of nutrients entering the soil. From mid-July, it is prohibited to use nitrogen for all plants in the middle zone and to the north, except for summer plants. To stimulate the second wave of flowering or its extension, to maintain splendor, only phosphorus-potassium mixtures can be added. At the same time, the amount of phosphorus in the soil is at its peak in July, so it is traditionally applied less than potassium.

Increasing loosening and keeping an eye on mulch

In July, a dense crust is almost instantly created on the ground due to excessively dry temperatures. In order for the soil not to lose air and water permeability, the plants do not suffer from soil compaction, loosening should be increased. Ideally, it is carried out after each rainfall or watering, plowing up the soil. But if there is not enough time and effort for such a frequency, loosen the soil at least every 2 weeks.

Frequent and inspection of the mulch layer. For many ornamental plants, it is not the moisture level that is critical, but protection from elevated soil temperatures near the rhizome. And only a high-quality layer of mulch can protect them from overheating. In July, it must be renewed or poured, monitoring throughout the month so that the layer remains the same and reliably protects your favorite plants.

Weeding and weeding again

Weeds should not be given a chance in July. The amount of moisture in the soil is already critically small, and flowering and ornamental deciduous plants that have reached their peak of development need an increased amount of nutrients. And spending limited resources on "outsiders" is unacceptable. Weed as often as you can (it is most convenient to combine it with loosening). Remove even the slightest weeds from flower beds, ridges and pay special attention to rockeries and alpine hills, where the soil is already depleted.

Tying and guiding

Many seasonal plants reach the most active phase of development by the middle of summer, in particular, vines that are actively gaining length. But not only roses and clematis, annual kobeys and tunbergia should be taken care of: large annuals, in particular phlox, delphiniums, dahlias, gladioli and many other plants, in July begin to need support and tying. Especially if they grow in windy, windy places.

If you did not install a support when planting and did not think about how you will tie up the shoots, it is high time to fill this gap in July. Set up pegs and carry out the first garter of summer creepers, provide support for powerful bushes of other plants, direct shoots for draping walls, obelisks, arches.

Relentlessly removing wilting buds

Abundant and long-lasting flowering in perennials, shrubs and summer plants can be achieved only if the withering flowers and inflorescences are cut in time. Only a few of the blooming beauties are capable of not responding to the beginning of the seed ripening process and fruiting. And if you want to admire the beauty of flowering as long as possible, in a timely manner, at the beginning of wilting, remove the inflorescences from bushes and sods. If you want to prepare seeds, leave a few inflorescences to ripen, but in a reasonable amount.

Disease and pest monitoring

At least weekly, carefully inspect the plants in your decorative compositions, paying particular attention to the back of the leaves. At the first sign of powdery mildew, aphids, and other problems, immediately carry out preventive spraying and start fighting.

Potted plants come first

The heat and lack of rainfall most of all in July are not the plants blooming in flower beds and in the flower beds, but pot and container crops. Magnificent ampels, large tubs, cheerful annuals - they all need extra care.

Plants in balcony and window boxes, on the terrace, in recreation areas and stone flower girls in the heat do not need watering daily, but even more often: the procedures should be carried out up to 2-3 times a day. At the same time, the timing of watering is critical and the procedures cannot be carried out outside the early morning and late evening. You can take a break from the procedures only in rainy weather.

It is necessary to increase not only watering, but also feeding. The usual weekly feeding in July can be replaced with procedures twice as often. You will also have to tirelessly remove wilting inflorescences from such anniversaries as scented tobacco, sweet peas, petunia, pelargonium and many others.

In July, cold-loving indoor plants can be safely taken out into the garden, on terraces and in other places protected from precipitation. Adapt them in the shade, and then expose them in partial shade or in locations where they will not be exposed to direct sunlight.

Roses in the spotlight

The garden princesses are already starting their magnificent parade by July. And in order for them to become a real decoration of the garden, you need to take care of roses tirelessly:

  • loosen the soil and prevent weeds from growing;
  • remove and destroy dry foliage in a timely manner and do not let it accumulate under the bushes;
  • update the mulch layer;
  • feed to stimulate flowering;
  • water roses regularly, maintaining light soil moisture and avoiding prolonged droughts;
  • remove wilting flowers;
  • cut the cuttings for propagation, choosing semi-lignified branches.

Cutting hedges and topiary

Usually, summer pruning of strict hedges and all garden green sculptures, including boxwood borders and spheres, is carried out in July. In plants, only young shoots are shortened, without affecting the skeletal and old branches, forming on a fresh growth. Typically, July pruning is superficial, aimed at thickening and achieving perfect textures and contours.

Moderate lawn mowing

In July, lawns must not be cut low. They are cut to a height of 5 cm. Immediately after cutting, deep watering should be carried out.

We actively plant seedlings of autumn stars

Despite its name, the annuals bloom not only during the hottest season. And in the fall, there are many annual plants that serve as a bright decoration of the garden. And it is in July that you need to take care of planting seedlings of asters, begonias, marigolds and other stars of the second half of the garden year. With their help, you can hide bald spots and imperfections, fill the vacant places after bulbous and other spring plants, add brightness to compositions and replenish potted gardens. It is not too late to decorate your garden with new petunias, calibrachoa, and ipomoea, the seedlings of which are available throughout the summer.

We sow biennials

Even at the height of summer in the garden, you can continue to sow plants for the next year. The July sowing is loved by many of the biennial crops, in particular forget-me-nots, yellow violet, pansies, daisies. Their seeds are best sown on well-shed seedlings. When sowing in July, young seedlings must be carefully looked after, maintaining constant moisture.

Pay attention to late crops made in May and June. Seedlings in July must be thinned out or cut down. At the end of the month, young plants can be transferred to a new location.

We take care of shrubs that have already finished their flowering

By mid-summer, many garden shrubs and dwarf shrubs complete the colorful parade. This month, you need to take care of pruning and additional measures to achieve even more colorful flowering next year:

  • remove all dry inflorescences from the lilac, and if you did not cut it in the spring, slightly shorten the shoots, remove the shoots and, if necessary, form the crown, without cutting off more than a third of the length of the branches;
  • prune wisteria, shortening the branches of young plants by only 10-15 cm and up to 2/3 of adult vines;
  • be sure to feed the peonies using potassium-phosphorus mixtures.

Pruning ground cover

Favorite pillow and carpet plants that have already faded (aubrieta, phlox, etc.) in July need rejuvenation and stimulating pruning. Without it, the bushes will quickly lose their attractiveness and, with their unkempt appearance, will spoil the look of the entire composition. Pruning in July stimulates thickening and active growth, allowing for the most picturesque coatings.

Do not forget about those carpet perennials that have just begun to bloom or are preparing for the most colorful period:

  • shorten their shoots that are too long;
  • pinch the tops of the "naughty" branches;
  • timely remove shoots that crawl into someone else's territory.

Separating irises

It is in July that irises are most often divided. In plants, the leaves are shortened to about 10 cm. Carefully digging out the rhizomes, it is divided into parts with 2-3 links and the same number of buds and a powerful bundle of roots. The length of the cut is about 3-4 cm. All sections must be treated with charcoal, and planting must be carried out only in a day.

We remove the bulbous

Favorite hyacinths, tulips and many other garden stars of the beginning of the year finally leave the garden scene in July. After the foliage turns yellow, the bulbs of all seasonal crops must be carefully dug up, after drying and sorting, they are stored outside the soil, in cool, dry and dark rooms.

Taking care of the pond

In July, algae actively develop in water bodies, and the rate of water evaporation reaches its peak. At the first sign of a green algae blockage, clean the pond. Do not forget to raise the water level, in a drought, gently replenish the loss of moisture with rain or plain water.
