A winter full of expectations and anticipation is finally over. But only on the calendar. Indeed, in March, in the middle lane, and even more so to the north, gardens and suburban areas are still freezing. However, this does not mean at all that the first truly active garden work, not related to monitoring and planning, will have to be postponed further. In March, the long-awaited new season really starts, and there will be enough trouble on all fronts. And the first timid signs of the awakening of nature will certainly inspire increased activity.

Latest control checks

In March, when the anticipation of the beginning of garden miracles is literally in the air, you should not forget to check your readiness for the active season for the last time. Mandatory measures include:

  • checking stocks of planting material;
  • the last correction of plans for the creation and improvement of decorative compositions;
  • purchase of seeds and bulbs, ordering perennials and seedlings for the implementation of the plan;
  • verification of plant information and compliance of planting and seeding plans with their requirements.

All these works have already been done during the winter, but it will be quite useful to check again. A little later, when spring has shown itself in full force, there will simply be no time to engage in planning and purchasing. Therefore, do not regret a few hours for "reinsurance" in March.

Seedlings and more seedlings

Despite the fact that March is the main month for sowing vegetables for the garden, you should not forget about ornamental plants. Moreover: the main seedlings for flower beds, balconies, terraces, ampels in the middle lane are sown in March.

Everyone's favorites - long-flowering annuals - love the March landing. Sowing this month is the seed of all the classic favorites in balcony landscaping, from snapdragon and verbena to scented tobacco, asters and celosia. Study the preferences of each plant carefully. For example, snapdragons and tobacco are sown without soil cover, the levkoy is deepened by 0.5-0.6 cm, and the rest of the annuals are generally content with covering 3-4 mm of soil.

But it is not only good to sow annuals in March. Delphiniums and lemongrass do best when sowing in March, especially if fresh seeds are used. Do not forget about spicy herbs, whose place in flower beds and in flower beds is difficult to dispute today. If you want to save on seedlings and cuttings, get a large amount of planting material at a minimal price, then it is worthwhile to allocate time for sowing priceless spicy-aromatic crops for seedlings.

In March, the seeds of catnip, lemon balm, mint, tarragon, oregano are sown. Sowing of these plants is carried out according to the standard scheme: the seeds are sprinkled less often on a nutritious loose substrate and covered with soil for no more than 0.5 cm. The dive is carried out only after the appearance of the second pair of leaves.

In March, diving will also be needed for crops sown in February, in which, a week after transplanting, you can feed and start pinching to thicken.

Think about forcing, sprouting, for the earliest possible start of the season, tubers of begonia, dahlias, acidantera, galtoria, crocosmia and other bulbous exotic plants. If in March you plant them in containers and pots, placing them at the optimal depth (for begonias, for example, it is desirable that a distance of about 1 cm remains from the top of the tubers to the soil surface), put the pots in a bright place with a temperature of 18 degrees Celsius, the plants will start growing earlier.

And by the time of planting on flower beds and in flower beds, a significant segment of the growing season has already passed and, accordingly, they will be able to bloom earlier. Study the characteristics of plants separately, but do not forget about the importance of disinfecting soaking in a weak solution of potassium permanganate and preparing tubers for planting, which is carried out in the same way as for open soil.

The first planting of new plants

It is better to plant shrubs and trees from among the ornamental species in spring as early as possible, while the heat has not taken full effect. As soon as the soil thaws, the seedlings should be transferred to a permanent place, digging large holes and not forgetting the correct choice of soil. For planting plants, it is better to choose fine, warm days, and the planting itself should not be postponed until the afternoon, but carried out early in the morning.

You should not postpone the purchase of new plants: it is better to buy plants a few days earlier, let the rhizomes be saturated with moisture, put them in a bucket of water for half a day and just dig in until a full planting can be carried out.

Retaining snow for effective hydration

You should not waste priceless natural resources and complicate your gardening work by neglecting the process of snow melting in the garden. After all, it is snow that is the main source of moisture and the only way to effectively moisturize the soil at the beginning of the garden year. And when it falls out a little, then wasting a precious resource is a real crime.

It is better to hold the snow cover on the site, slow down the melting of the snow so that it does not come off quickly, but slowly, effectively saturating the soil with moisture exactly where you need it. The task of keeping snow is easy: trample it where you can, cover it from the sun with mulch or peat, direct the streams of water with ridges of snow or stones.

But when performing work to optimize soil moisture, do not forget that snow is far from being necessary everywhere, and for some plants it is dangerous. Keep an eye on the snow cover and regularly shake off wet, melting snow from the branches of ornamental shrubs and trees, because at the very beginning of spring it can cause serious injury to plants. Avoid trampling and even walking on lawns and where ground cover grows.

Be sure to pay attention to the drainage system, if necessary, clean the drains.

Don't forget about sun protection

Every day the sun warms up more and more, and the contrast between the temperature of the frozen earth, air and sunlight becomes simply dangerous. And throughout March, plants prone to frost breaks and sunburn need to be given increased attention. This month is especially dangerous for conifers and young seedlings. Even those species that are not prone to burning out needles can be seriously affected as a result of dehydration.

Protect your plants throughout the month, check whether the crowns are securely wrapped with non-woven materials or paper, whether the winding has not been unwound on the trunks of young seedlings. And where you have not yet managed to create protection in February, be sure to fill the gap. Trunks of trees and shrubs can be whitewashed and covered with protective compounds at the beginning of the calendar spring.

It is in March that it is better to clean woody ones from moss and lichen before whitewashing. For plants that have suffered from sun exposure, especially conifers, which show signs of yellowing of the entire crown, water as soon as the weather permits and repeat the procedure at least 2-3 times.

After-winter cleaning of decorative compositions and objects

You cannot walk on a green carpet not only in winter, but also in early spring. Even if all the snow has melted from the lawn, but at least slightly frosty weather still persists, it is extremely undesirable to step on the surface of the lawn. Only after the snow has completely melted and even in the morning there is no frost on the grass, debris and moss pads can be removed from the lawn for the first time. After cleaning, it is worth scattering the sand on the green carpet in a thin, even layer. It will improve the water permeability of the turf, speed up their drying and allow the grasses to recover faster.

A similar cleaning is needed for all perennial plants in decorative ensembles. Dead leaves and shoots should be cut off immediately after the snow cover melts. Cleaning the clumps will help the plants to release young shoots faster. But do not rush to immediately remove and destroy such plant residues from the site: it is in the dry sods of garden perennials that useful garden insects most often winter.

And dry leaves and shoots should be put in one pile and left until warming, so that your assistants have time to wake up and not die. There is no need to be afraid of leaving pests along with beneficial insects: they rarely choose flowering perennials as a wintering place.

As the soil becomes bare, examine the clumps of plants in rock gardens and flower beds, in mixborders and other ensembles. If the plants rise above the soil, their roots are exposed, add soil and mulch.

Pay special attention to cleaning perennial crops that grow near ponds, streams, and other bodies of water. After all, if you delay cleaning, then the dead parts of the plants will jeopardize the health of the entire ecosystem. Remove old shoots and leaves from the plants themselves, from the surface of the water surface, and from the bottom of the pond as soon as the snow and ice melt. After finishing spring cleaning, install oxygen enrichment devices.

Trimming comes first

Shrubs and trees should be in the spotlight this month, because a haircut is needed not only for berry crops, but also for purely decorative species. True, not all crops will need pruning. You cannot touch those blooming on the shoots of last year, and those that bloom on young branches had to be cut back in February and in March they only work with them if the buds have not swollen.

But evergreen trees and shrubs are cut mainly in March. Their function of the main decoration of the winter garden has already been fulfilled, and it's time to take care of the beauty in the current season, to carry out shaping, rejuvenation, and cleaning.

You can work in March with winter-green crops and other shrubs and in hedges, in groups, and growing as soloists. The timing of pruning is limited: it can be carried out only until the buds of the plants swell and active sap flow begins. In those shrubs that combine beautiful flowering with decorative fruits, the shoots are shortened to 2-4 buds. For the rest, pruning is carried out individually, in the form of thinning, rejuvenation or formation.

Removing damaged, dry, crown-thickening shoots is a must for any tree or shrub. It is impossible to maintain the health and attractiveness of plants without sanitizing, so problems should not be ignored. Each plant, even in dense groups, must be examined, evaluated, and tried to predict its development for several years ahead.

If the plants are unstable or capricious, then immediately after pruning it is better to carry out preventive spraying. The first treatment against diseases and pests should be carried out in March for decorative flowering shrubs.

It is critical to unravel roses in time, for which drying out is one of the most dangerous factors

Slowly removing cover

Whether or not it is necessary to remove winter shelters from plants in March, and the timing of unwrapping directly depends on the weather. If March is favorable, then in the second half of the month you can at least begin to remove the first layers of shelters from plants. But if there is no above-zero temperature, the cold continues, then you should start unpacking much later.

The main guideline, however, should remain the "behavior" of the plants themselves. And the terms for each need to be determined individually. As soon as the daytime temperature begins to rise above zero, regularly look under the shelter and monitor the development: it is important not to miss the moment when the buds swell and the plant activates. While the plants remain "dormant", you need to start airing the shelters, opening first on one side on sunny days for airing.

The shelter is removed gradually, from the upper layers. While the frost remains at night, spruce branches, the spud with dry foliage must be preserved, especially protecting the grafting sites and root necks. It is better to protect the plants from sunburn and provide shading and protection with spruce branches for the first time after removing the shelter.

It is critical to unravel roses in time, for which damping is one of the most dangerous factors. They begin to ventilate from the beginning of March. Most plants can wait until mid-March with the beginning of the procedure, and bulbous plants should be freed from shelter only after severe frosts and most of the snow have left (the maximum negative temperature should not exceed -7 degrees).

Do not forget about our smaller brothers

Despite the fact that spring begins for gardeners regardless of the weather in March, it is still difficult for the animals in the garden to find food for themselves. Do not forget to take care of them in March too, regularly filling feeders and birdhouses with goodies. Better yet, hang new bird houses in the garden in March. It is in this month that not only the first plants wake up, but also insect pests. And it will not be superfluous to attract birds to the site so that they help fight harmful pests.

Pots and tubs in anticipation of the warmth

The time when it will be possible to decorate the garden with the first potted gardens and take out your favorite container plants into the fresh air is still far away. But all horticultural crops wintering indoors require attention already in March. It is in this month that you need to carry out a transplant or transshipment. And for those plants whose roots have not yet filled with an earthen ball, it is better to simply replace the top layer of the substrate in the containers.

Airing should also become more active. But plants need to be protected from drafts and the bright spring sun, because for them contrasting drops are just as dangerous as for garden crops. With the appearance of the first signs of active growth, garden crops should be rearranged to brighter lighting and the air temperature should be raised in order to avoid stretching the shoots.

Plant monitoring, shoot and leaf inspections should be done as often as possible. Watch not only for the slightest signs of pests and diseases, but also for the condition of the branches and leaves. The sooner measures are taken to correct insufficient lighting or watering and combat problems, the better.

If you have some tub plants hibernating under a thick shelter in the garden, then it is in March that you need to start raising the shelter, check the moisture content of the soil and air under it, make regular ventilation and take additional measures to protect against rodents, wind, and sun.

In addition to transplanting, attention should be paid to the preparation of containers for planting plants. Balcony and window boxes, containers, pots, all containers that you plan to use for planting summer houses, drawing up potted gardens to decorate the site, including hanging pots for ampels, must be checked, cleaned again, and prepared for planting.

It is important to stock up on the substrate, special soil mixtures, a set of fertilizers and plant protection products, check and prepare all the tools and materials necessary for planting seedlings. The more organizational issues you decide in advance, the less time you will spend in April and May.
