January. It would seem that the garden is asleep, the garden is dull, but neither the gardener nor the gardener has to completely forget about the troubles. How carefully we treat what nature gives us this month, how well we spend the time for rest, depends on how the plants will survive the winter, and how the earth will prepare for spring, and what will grow on our beds in the new season. In a word, the saying “prepare the sleigh in the summer and the cart in the winter” is about this period.
Snow to help
If the ground is covered with snow, that's good. It protects plant roots from freezing. And therefore, in the garden and in the garden, you need to do a little housekeeping: throw snow under the trees, on the shoots of raspberries and grapes bent to the ground, on currant and gooseberry bushes, on the beds. Strawberries are especially sensitive to severe frosts - you need to take care of them first. In areas with strong winds, it is a good idea to set up snow deflectors.
But it is better to shake off snow from tree branches, especially if it is one-, two- or three-year-old seedlings. This should be done at noon, when the snow has melted a little, using a long pole, starting from the lower tier of the branches. In order not to damage the frozen bark, it is better to wrap the end of the device with a rag.
Feeders for birds
If there are bird feeders in your garden, it's time to clean them and refill them. What do our feathered neighbors eat? Sunflower seeds, millet, oats, wheat, dried hawthorn and rowan berries. Tits and nuthatches will not give up lard or meat, which can be strung on a string, but they must be bland.
If there is no feeder yet, but there is a desire to make it, then it is not necessary to tinker with a complex structure. It is quite enough to adapt for this good deed a plastic bottle, a box of chocolates, a tetra-pack of juice. Hanging up the "bird's dining room" is necessary taking into account the fact that local cats may want to hunt for visitors. You also need to think about so that the goodies are not blown away by the wind and covered with snow.
Uninvited guests
But with mice and hares it is better not to stand on ceremony. If they get into the habit of visiting you, then you will not end up with problems. Therefore, it is necessary to constantly inspect the territory of the garden-vegetable garden for traces of their stay, and if they are found, urgently take action.
If everything was done in advance, then in January it remains only to fix the strapping on the tree boles and, in order to destroy the mouse passages, trample their near-stem circles.
But, the garden and the beds are not the only place where rodents can appear. Basement, cellar, sheds - the territory where mice and rats like to visit. It is necessary to set traps in them, and a mesh on the ventilation ducts.
Large size
In January, you can start planting trees, but this rule is only suitable for large growers. Transplanted during this period, they take root more easily. At the same time, an apple tree, a pear and a plum easily tolerate this procedure, but a cherry over 10 years old requires caution and special attention.
Greenhouses
If you have polycarbonate greenhouses, and you did not remove polycarbonate from them for the winter, be sure to put supports from the inside and regularly sweep the snow from the roof. In addition, it will not be superfluous to throw snow inside the structure, as well as clear it around the structure if the height of the snow cover starts to reach 50 cm.
Unheated glass greenhouses can also suffer under the weight of snow. But the snow will melt off the heated ones. In January, if this was not done in December, tomato seedlings are planted in them, as well as early ripening green ones.
Vegetable garden on the window
If you are missing greens and want to grow fresh vitamins on the window - it's time to start forcing onions on a feather, plant root parsley, garlic cloves in pots or boxes. If you want to tinker with more serious plantings, then you can sow watercress, spinach, rucolla. But for the latter, it is imperative to organize more careful care and high-quality supplementary lighting (the duration of daylight hours for them should be from 13 to 15 hours a day).
If you plan to grow root or petiole celery, seed potatoes, late varieties of peppers in the garden, it's time to sow them to get seedlings. And also, in January, seeds of certain strawberry varieties are sown.
Vaults
Mandatory in the middle of winter and revision of storages. Thorough inspection of vegetables and fruits, elimination of rotten specimens, maintaining the correct temperature and humidity are the guarantors of the safety of the bulk of the workpieces.
garden tools
In the period of relatively free winter days, you need to take care of garden tools. And here we are talking not only about repairs, but about the selection and purchase of new tools. And also the purchase of mineral fertilizers, land for sowing seeds for seedlings, films, non-woven covering material and other things necessary for the garden and vegetable garden.
In addition, it's time to prepare a new set of clothes for working with chemicals, review buckets and baskets, and buy gloves. It is worth remembering that gloves are different: for working with the soil, for caring for trees and shrubs, for pruning prickly plants, for harvesting, for contact with liquids …
Seeds
And, of course, in the midst of winter, you need, and, frankly, really want to think about spring plantings. In January, you can make a crop rotation, study new varieties of varieties, buy seed.
