In this article, I will talk about the Virginia Cheryomukha, an ornamental culture that is happily grown on plots for its beauty. Sometimes they call it that - red bird cherry. They brought her from North America. More often found in the form of a large multi-stemmed bush up to 5 m in height, less often as a small tree. Growing fast. Can grow into dense clumps.
Description of the virgin bird cherry, or red
The virgin bird cherry blossoms a little later than the common bird cherry, which contributes to higher yields, since the color is not damaged by spring frosts. Abundant flowering, the tree seems to be shrouded in white openwork foam, which gives the plant an unusually beautiful look. The flowers are small, two-toed, odorless, collected in clusters up to 15 cm in length. Blooms for about two weeks.
The fruits also ripen later than the common bird cherry, in August-September. They look bright or dark red, the taste is sweet and sour, pleasant, not as tart as that of its ordinary relative, and fruiting is more regular. In addition, the fruits do not fall off for a long time. They can hang on a tree until next spring, decorating it even in winter.
Fruits contain sugars, organic acids, tannins, seeds - oil. By the way, they can be used to make bird cherry flour, which is used as a filling for pies. To prepare such flour, the stalks are separated from the berries, washed, allowed to dry in the air, and then dried in the oven at a temperature not exceeding 50 degrees. Dry fruits are ground. In addition, berries are eaten fresh, added to compotes.
Virginia bird cherry care
Virginia bird cherry does not need special care. Less demanding on soils than common bird cherry, but loves loose, fertile, well-moisturized places. Therefore, it often grows along river banks. Can grow in light shade, but is best planted in a spacious, open, well-lit area. Bird cherry virgin, culture resistant to drought, frost, pests and diseases. It drains the soil well, and fallen leaves have a beneficial effect on its composition.

The Virginia bird cherry is propagated by seeds, cuttings, shoots and root layers. It begins to bear fruit already in the 3rd year after planting when propagating by shoots and in the 6-7th year - with the seed method. The seeds are planted in the fall to a depth of 5-6 cm. If the sowing is carried out in the spring, the seeds are stratified for 3–4 months. in wet sand at 3-5 degrees Celsius. The seedlings grow slowly for the first 2 years.
Bird cherry trees can be planted both in spring and autumn. Pits are dug to a depth of 40 cm and 60 cm in diameter. On heavy soils, peat and sand are added; it is useful to add up to 300 g of superphosphate to each planting pit. For better pollination, several bushes are planted at once at a distance of 1.5-2 m from each other.
When planting virgin bird cherry, remember that, unlike ordinary bird cherry, it gives abundant growth and self-seeding. Such seedlings can be planted in a permanent place as early as 2 years of age. The Schubert variety is especially decorative.
