Horseradish is a perennial, frost-resistant plant. Its roots contain essential oils (mustard, allyl), which give it a burning taste, as well as vitamin C, calcium, potassium, sodium and other substances.

Horseradish is a valuable vegetable and medicinal plant. It stimulates the secretion of gastric juice, improves digestion, has a diuretic and antimicrobial effect. Horseradish is used grated with red beet juice, with sour cream, served with any meat dish.

Growing horseradish

Horseradish propagates vegetatively, that is, parts of the roots. It is grown in fertile areas, since woody, very bitter roots are formed on heavy clay soils.

Preparing the soil for planting horseradish

On the selected bed, 1 bucket of humus and 2-3 tablespoons of wood ash, 1-2 tablespoons of nitrophosphate are applied to 1 m². Carefully, dig deeper, level, water and start planting.

Long horseradish roots are cut into 2-3 pieces. The most suitable cuttings are finger-thick (1-1.5 cm) and up to 12-15 cm long. For planting, you can take and trim the roots up to 5-8 cm

Horseradish does not like shading, although it is often grown among fruit and berry crops.

Planting horseradish

The best time for planting horseradish is the third decade of April, but you can plant it both in summer and autumn. 4-6 plants are grown per 1 m².

Root cuttings are planted obliquely, at an angle of 45 °, so that the lower end of the cutting is covered with a layer of earth up to 12-15 cm, and the upper end is 3-5 cm from the surface of the bed. The distance between the cuttings is 35-40 cm.

To obtain even, smooth horseradish roots, before planting, the buds in the middle part of the cutting are removed by wiping them with burlap.

Only the buds are left on the upper (1-1.5 cm) and lower (2-3 cm) ends of the horseradish cutting. Leaves grow from the upper ones, and roots grow from the lower ones.

Horseradish care

The opinion that horseradish culture does not require any maintenance is deeply mistaken. Planting needs loosening, fertilizing and watering.

To obtain straight rhizomes, the following technique is used: when the leaves of the plants reach a height of 15-18 cm, they carefully scoop the soil from the root and, exposing it, wipe it with a coarse rag and break off all the side roots. Then the horseradish root crop is again covered with earth. This operation is done in cloudy weather or in the evening, then the root crop grows large and even.

Horseradish is stored cut into pieces 20-25 cm long, 2-3 cm thick. They are cleaned of lateral roots, tied in bundles, sprinkled with sand and stored in the basement.
