Hovea saturates the air with moisture and purifies it of harmful chemicals. Hovea is a large palm tree that can grow up to the ceiling indoors. Its trunk is covered with leafy scars in the form of rings, feathery leaves on graceful petioles form a spreading transparent crown. Hove is patronized by Gemini. A beautiful palm tree maintains an atmosphere of kind-heartedness, optimism and cheerfulness, does not allow one to lose heart. The palm tree is especially useful where people are subject to despondency, unreasonable sadness, work through strength, do not find enough strength in themselves to fully communicate with others. Hovea will bring new colors to their lives: they will feel a surge of enthusiasm, they will feel capable of performing decisive actions.

Arec family (palms). Hovei are evergreen, hardy palms that are well suited for indoor cultivation. In nature, there are two species - Howea fosteriana and Howea belmoreana.

Kinds

Hovea Belmora is a slender tall palm tree that grows up to 10 m in height. The trunk is widened at the base, the leaves are pinnate, arcuate, up to 4 m long. The petiole of each leaf is no more than 35-40 cm.

Hovea Foster is a taller palm tree, can reach 12 m in height. The trunk is not widened at the base, the leaves are feathery, less curving, but wider, up to 2.5 m in length, and the leaf petioles are much longer - up to 1.5 m. When grown in a greenhouse, it can bloom and bear fruit.

Features:

Temperature: Moderate throughout the year - 14-18 ° C, preferably not higher. The winter minimum for the Belmore hovei is 16 ° C, for the Forster hovei - 10 ° C. If hovea still grows at higher temperatures of about 22 ° C, then it must be sprayed as often as possible.

Lighting: Hovea needs a bright place, shading from the sun's rays. But don't place this palm in a shaded area. In winter, the lighting should be very good.

Watering: The frequency of watering depends on the temperature at which the plant is kept. But, in general, watering should be uniform, abundant in spring and summer, and moderate in autumn and winter. The soil should not be very moist, otherwise the soil will sour, as evidenced by the brown tips of the leaves. The soil should not dry out either.

Fertilizing watering is carried out from May to September weekly, with a special fertilizer for palms or any liquid fertilizer for indoor plants.

Humidity: Hovea is very fond of spraying and showering, despite the fact that some sources write that these palms carry dry air. Therefore, it would not be bad to make it a rule to spray the hovea in the morning and evening. When kept in the garden in the summer, you can periodically arrange a shower from a garden hose with a spray, while covering the soil from getting wet with a plastic bag.

Transplant: He does not like transplanting very much, so they transplant only when the roots fill the entire pot or tub and begin to crawl out of the container, i.e. after about 2-3 years - young plants, after a few years - old ones. Every year, the top layer of the earth is loosened, very carefully with a thin stick, trying not to damage the roots. Soil - 2 parts of light clay-sod, 2 parts of humus-leaf, 1 part of peat, 1 part of rotted manure, 1 part of sand and a little charcoal.

Reproduction: By seeds, but rather difficult - at a temperature of 23-25 ° C, sown in February-March, it is also possible by dividing old plants.

Care

Hovei can tolerate direct sun, grow well in bright rooms with south-facing windows. Will tolerate some shading. They can grow near windows of the north-west and north-east directions.

Light shading from the direct sun is necessary only in summer - for this it is enough to block the window with a tulle curtain. It should be noted that a recently purchased plant or a plant that has been in partial shade for a long time should be accustomed to direct sun gradually, in order to avoid sunburn.

In the spring-summer period, hovei prefer temperatures around 20-24 ° C. In winter, palms thrive at 18-20 ° C, although they tolerate lower temperatures (12-16 ° C). Adult specimens tolerate cool temperatures more easily. For hovea, it is important that there is an influx of fresh air into the room, at the same time drafts should be avoided.

In the summer, the hoveu is watered abundantly, as the upper layer of the substrate dries up, with soft, settled water. The softness of the water is of fundamental importance, since hovea does not tolerate excess lime well. Since autumn, watering is reduced, however, they do not allow the earthen coma to completely dry out.

Hovei are not too sensitive to dry air, however, in the summer they respond well to spraying with soft, lukewarm, settled water. Do not spray in winter. From time to time it is useful to wash the leaves from dust in the shower, if the plant is large, then the leaves can be wiped with a damp cloth.

Fertilizers are needed not only in summer, but also during other periods. Palm trees are fed with mineral fertilizer of normal concentration, in the summer 2 times a month, in other periods - once a month.

Young hovei are transplanted every year, older ones - once every 2-3 years. Large tubular specimens may not be replanted, however, the top layer of the substrate should be replaced annually in the tub. During transplantation, remove the old drainage layer and the top layer of the earth, avoid damaging the roots. The soil for transplanting can be made up as follows: sod land (4 parts), humus (2 parts), leafy earth (1 part), sand (1 part). With age, the proportion of humus increases. The bottom of the pot provides good drainage.

Hovea can grow hydroponically.

Reproduction

Hovei are propagated mainly by seeds, however, for amateurs this is not too easy, since the early stage of plant development is characterized by extremely slow growth: in order to noticeably grow, hovee takes 5-7 years. Sowing is carried out at the end of winter in peat, and the air temperature during seed germination is maintained at 27 ° C. If the seeds sprout, then, when they have developed enough, they are split (planted) one at a time in 8-centimeter pots. As the plant develops, the size of the pot increases during transplantation; the temperature is maintained within the range of 18-25 ° C.

Diseases and pests

If the optimal growing conditions are not observed (for example, in the case of a lack or excess of water, being in a cold draft), the leaves of the hovea may turn brown.

As for pests, it is damaged by worms: both mealy and pseudococcids, which, sucking the juice from the plant, cause wilting and yellowing of the leaves, and contribute to the appearance of the mob. They are disposed of with a damp cloth or cotton swab dipped in alcohol. Then the plant is treated with an appropriate (anti-coccid) insecticide.

Mites can cause mottling, first yellow, then dark, then more extensive wounds and grooves form, and finally the leaves become transparent. It is necessary to maintain high humidity around the plant - regularly spray the leaves with water - these conditions do not like ticks - and treat with special preparations.
