The most interesting types and varieties of thuja for the middle lane
Evergreen thuja - an unpretentious fast-growing coniferous plant - cannot be found in natural conditions on the territory of our country. The thing is that the homeland of these conifers from the cypress family is North America, and various nurseries of ornamental and coniferous plants are engaged in breeding and zoning in our country.
It is no coincidence that the people call the thuyu "the royal tree" - this stately beauty used to decorate only the alleys of the royal palaces. Today, thuja is quite accessible to every amateur gardener, and many species and varieties of this plant are successfully used in the design of gardens, parks and adjoining territories. Many, but not all. It is best to buy thuja from local producers so that it is precisely zoned for growing in your climatic conditions. This is the key to her successful wintering.
By the efforts of breeders, more than 120 various varieties of the existing five types of thuja have been created to date. But, unfortunately, only those that cope well with our climatic conditions can be used in the middle lane. We present to your attention the description of the most interesting of them and, accordingly, the most popular.
Thuja western "Brabant"
"Brabant" is one of the fastest growing thujas. In our climatic conditions, the height of an adult tree rarely exceeds 5 meters, although in favorable conditions of a mild climate it can reach 20 m. A year the growth of shoots in height reaches 30 cm, while the diameter of the needles increases by 15 cm. The needles are of a beautiful bright green color, in some varieties - with golden tips.
The cone-shaped crown of the "Brabant" thuja with numerous branches retains its decorative effect throughout the year. Sometimes the tree grows and doesn't look quite neat. To prevent this from happening, the crown is regularly pruned. Pruning stimulates the formation of numerous new shoots, and, as a result, the tree is covered with dense ("stuffed") needles. Timely pruning can easily correct the shape of the crown.
Thuja "Brabant" is distinguished by good survival rate and unpretentiousness. She prefers well-moistened soils, it is on them that she shows all her beauty and splendor. It will withstand arid areas of the soil, but then it is unlikely to amaze the imagination with its appearance. Its crown, most likely, will thin out, and the color will turn from green to yellowish. Therefore, when planting thuja in poor arid areas, you need to take care of regular watering.
It is advisable to plant the western thuja in partial shade, in the bright sun the needles can dehydrate in winter from frost, and in summer, a strong temperature difference does not benefit the plant. In the early years, young plants are covered with agrofibre for the winter, in one or two layers, depending on the thickness of the tissue. Grown up thuja do not need shelter.
Thuja "Brabant" is effective in any use. With the help of a haircut, you can give it a strict, laconic shape, and it will correspond to the regular style of the garden, or you can “let it go free”, and the resulting “Tousle-tangle” will perfectly fit into the rural landscape.
Thuja western "Smaragd"
Thuja western "Smaragd" is an evergreen coniferous tree of the correct conical shape. Adding 10 cm in height annually, it can grow up to 5-6 m in height. Smaragd has a beautiful symmetrical shape, which practically does not require pruning, and bright emerald needles. The surface of the needles is shiny, and when the sun's rays hit the tree, it shimmers, filling the space around it with a sense of celebration.
Thuja "Smaragd" grows best in places protected from the wind, in areas with fertile moist soil. In dry summers, frequent watering, spraying and mandatory soil mulching are required. Loves a sunny location, but in this case she will need shelter for the winter: the sun and frost can dry out the needles. A good place to plant is shade at noon.
"Smaragd" is the most frost-resistant thuja. It will survive frost and -40 on C, but from sunburn it should be protected. That is why the first 2-3 years she needs shelter for the winter.
Thuja "Smaragd" is one of the favorite plants of many designers. A small group of literally three plants will decorate and make a regular lawn stylish. Thuja planted in a row will form an alley or separate a zone. This beauty will always find a place both in coniferous compositions and in decorative deciduous ones.
Thuja western "Golden Globe"
This is an original spherical shrub. Its name in Russian sounds just like that - a golden ball. A very beautiful miniature coniferous plant. The dimensions of an adult do not go beyond 80 cm both in height and in width. The shrub grows slowly and is finally formed only by 10 years. The effectiveness of thuja is given by needles - bright green with golden-yellow tops of the shoots. By autumn, the golden color changes to copper, and in the spring, with the beginning of growth, the shrub is again covered with gilding.
Like other thuja species, Golden Globe prefers moist, nutritious soils, although it can withstand short-term drought. With a regular lack of water, the needles will lose their brightness, become rare and inconspicuous. Location is very important for this variety - in full shade the needles will not have a golden hue, and in full sun the shoots can burn. Therefore, when landing the "golden ball", it is necessary to find a middle ground. Openwork partial shade is an ideal place. Otherwise, this variety is similar to other western thuja - unpretentious, frost-resistant, reacts well to a haircut. Requires shading from the spring sun.
Thuja "Golden Globe" is one of those plants that always has a place. The "Golden Ball" will decorate any design, be it the landscape of the site on Rublevka or a cozy courtyard in Prostokvashino. Its value also lies in the fact that it is an ideal plant for creating contrast in a lively composition, both in shape and color.
Less common, but other varieties of western thuja also grow and develop well in difficult climatic conditions:
- Thuja western "Sankist" is a cone-shaped shrub with golden needles. The height of an adult plant is 3 m, the diameter of the needles is 1.5 m;
- Thuja western "Reingold" is a slow-growing spherical shrub with yellow-golden needles. Maximum dimensions 3 m in height and in width;
- Thuja western "Teddy" is a globular dwarf among all dwarfs. At 10 years old, the height of the bush can reach as much as 30 cm! The needles are soft, dark green in color, acquire bronze tones by autumn;
- Thuja western "Holmstrup" is a slow- growing tree of a narrow pyramidal shape. The maximum height is 3.5 m, the annual growth is 10-12 cm. The needles are dark green in color, dense;
- Thuja western "Pyramidalis compacta" - thuja with a telling name. A compact pyramidal tree. The height of an adult plant is 5 m. The needles of a juicy green color turn somewhat brown in winter;
- Thuja western "Mr. Bowling Ball" - another type of dwarf spherical thuja. Thanks to the peculiar needles with long tips, it looks like a spiky ball. The height of an adult plant is no more than 70 cm, width is 1 m. It grows slowly, increasing shoots by 5-10 cm per year.
Thuja folded "Kan-kan"
Thuja "Kan-kan" is an original evergreen coniferous plant. Despite its diminutiveness, and an adult tree does not exceed 1.5 m in height, it grows rather quickly. In a year "Kan-kan" increases by about 10 cm in height.
Long shoots of the tree branch well, but chaotically directed. Because of this feature, the young thuja does not look very neat, but with age, the growing shoots, denser, give it a cone shape.
Thuja needles "Kan-kan" are of deep green color, shiny. And one more important feature: it does not change color in winter. At the beginning of summer, thuja looks especially attractive due to the young growth of a pale green color with golden tips.
Thuja "Kan-kan" grows well in openwork shade on moist fertile soils. It lends itself well to haircutting, which is easily tolerated and quickly overgrows with new needles. Easily copes with urban gas pollution, but does not tolerate frosts. Temperatures below 28 to C may affect it is not the best way - shoots with such frosts freeze slightly. Therefore, for this variety, winter shelter is especially important, and you need to cover both the tree itself and the soil around it.
To do this, the thuja tree trunk circle for the winter is covered with a thick layer of sawdust, straw or coniferous litter. The tree itself is first wrapped in twine in a spiral, trying to press the branches to the trunk, and from above it is covered with agrofibre or burlap. This measure will protect branches from falling apart during heavy snowfalls.
For information on how to properly prepare conifers for wintering, including thuja, read the article 7 conditions for the successful wintering of conifers.
All described western thujas, like folded thuja "Kan-kan", are unpretentious, undemanding to soil and weather conditions. With good care, they can withstand both severe frosts and hot dry periods, are little affected by diseases and pests. All thujas respond well to formation. Another thing is that not everyone needs shaping. Each variety can be used in landscape design both as a single plant and in a group of other coniferous or deciduous plants.
Thuja planting subtleties
Thuja, like other conifers, is a long-liver, and with proper care can decorate the site for many years.
Thuja care begins with proper planting. The plant does not impose special requirements for placement and other conditions, however, in order to grow a beautiful healthy plant, some conditions must still be met.
Planting a thuja is a simple matter and rather even pleasant. Seedlings with a closed root system go on sale - it is easy to plant such plants, and their survival rate is very high. When buying a seedling, you need to pay attention to its general condition:
- the arrangement of the branches is uniform and symmetrical;
- healthy needles - no dried or rusty areas;
- slightly damp clod of earth.
It is possible to plant thuja with a closed root system in the summer, but it is better not to tighten and plant the plants before the onset of heat. All thujas love a bright location with light shading at midday - which means that such a place should be chosen. It is important to consider the size of an adult tree, as some varieties grow quite large. The distance between plants depends on the purpose - if it is a hedge, then the plants are planted a meter apart, in other cases - according to the conceived design.
The soil for thuja is preferable to be moist, but without stagnant water, therefore, drainage must be laid in the planting pit, especially on heavy clay soils or with a close location of groundwater. If the site has good fertile soil, the planting process looks like this:
- dig a hole of a suitable size;
- lay a layer of drainage, sprinkle with sand, then - with a layer of soil;
- gently pull the plant out of the pot, trying not to disturb the earthen lump;
- place the seedling in the hole so that the soil surface of the seedling is flush with the surface of the plot;
- sprinkle the seedling with earth, water it well and add soil to the settled places;
- mulch the near-trunk circle with needles, cones, sawdust or peat.
If the soil on the site is sandy, you will have to prepare a special soil for the thuja, since the sand does not hold water well and such soil dries out quickly. Therefore, you need to prepare a mixture of leafy soil, garden soil, peat and humus in a ratio of 1: 1: 0.5: 0.5.
For areas with heavy clay soil, sand and peat are added to the soil. In this case, they dig a large hole - it should be twice or three times the size of a coma with roots.
Features of thuja care on the site
Despite the unpretentiousness of the thuja, it is impossible to plant and forget about it. Watering, feeding and cutting - everything is like any other plants. When pests or diseases are detected, and this also happens - the fight against the disease.
Read more about diseases and pests of coniferous plants in the material Diseases and pests of coniferous plants - prevention and control measures.
Watering and feeding
Watering thuja begins immediately after planting. The frequency of watering depends on the weather - in hot, dry weather, you may have to do this procedure every other day. A thick layer of mulch will help ease the task and significantly reduce watering. By the way, weeding and loosening of the mulched soil is not needed. It is better to water the thuja in the evening, by sprinkling - it loves high humidity.
2-3 weeks after planting, you can feed the thuja with a special mineral fertilizer for conifers. If this is not the case, you can take the usual complex fertilizer, but make the concentration twice weaker than for fruit trees and shrubs. Conifers do not need a large number of dressings, therefore, during the growing season, you can apply fertilizer only twice - at the beginning of summer and in the middle. In the second half of summer, you can do without top dressing or apply an autumn mineral fertilizer without nitrogen once.
Many types of thuja need regular pruning - some to give the desired shape, others - to restrain growth or correct the crown. These plants tolerate haircuts well, quickly grow needles and transform literally before our eyes. There are several simple rules to follow when pruning a thuja:
- Formation should begin from the first years and do it regularly and little by little.
- The best time is the beginning of summer, when the buds open, and the end of summer.
- Do not prune in damp weather - open sections should dry out as quickly as possible.
- You cannot cut a branch more than 1/3 of its length.
Before you start pruning, you need to study the plant and understand what should be the result. You need to start by removing dry and broken branches. Then remove or shorten the shoots that stand out from the general silhouette. Sometimes you need to thin out the crown, you need to do this carefully and slowly: cut it off - walked away, looked and so on. The rule "measure 7 times, cut once" is the main rule when cutting plants.
To restrain the growth of thuja, the conductor is shortened, and after it is overgrown, the crown is corrected. To give the seedling the appearance of a pyramid, ball or spiral, preparation begins several years in advance. Immediately after planting, the thuja is annually pruned, achieving the density of the crown - only from such a plant can a figure be formed.
Depending on the type of pruning, different tools are used - pruning shears, garden shears and a universal brush cutter. All instruments must be sharp and clean. You can disinfect the blades with hydrogen peroxide or any antiseptic.
After pruning, the thuja can be sprayed with a solution of "Epin" or "Zircon", these preparations will help the plant to survive stress faster, and at the same time - increase immunity and accelerate the growth of young shoots.
