Landscape designers and amateurs appreciated the high decorative qualities and originality of the berry yew, as well as the fact that it is one of the most unpretentious and durable plants. By the way, yew is the only plant among conifers without resin, which means it is odorless. Forms drupe berries instead of the usual conifer cones.

It grows very slowly at first. Growth accelerates after 4-6 years. But even at the age of 30, the plant height reaches only about 1 m. The root system is dense, powerful, allowing it to adapt to any conditions. At the same time, the proximity to the yew tree can be detrimental to other plants.

The crown is ovate-cylindrical, dense, often multi-peaked. The needles are soft, flat, dark green, located spirally on the shoots, on the side branches - in pairs. The length of the needles is 2-3.5 cm. Yew is a dioecious plant. That is, it has female and male forms. On the female, numerous bright red berries are formed, which remain on the branches until late autumn. Wood has strong phytoncidal and bactericidal properties. For a long time, people have known that houses in which floors or furniture were made of yew are reliably protected from infections. The beautiful red-brown wood of the yew is very valuable - hard, heavy and almost does not rot, so the plant was named "nogo-tree". Unfortunately, because of this, yew forests were massively cut down, and now the yew is listed in the Red Book. But it can be successfully grown on the site.

Does not need special care. Prefers fertile moist calcareous soils, does not tolerate acidic soils. It can also grow on clay soils. Drainage is desirable, since the plant does not tolerate excess moisture. Yew is planted both in sunny and shaded places. It grows even where other plants do not take root from lack of light. But in light areas, yew gives a greater increase. Afraid of severe frosts. After frosty winters, dried shoots are cut off. Yew is wind-resistant, can take out dirty air. Even in adulthood, it tolerates a transplant well. In drought and at low humidity of air and soil, the needles dries out.

Yew is propagated from seeds and cuttings. They take root easily. Seeds remain viable for 4 years. When sowing in spring, seeds are stratified for 7 months at a temperature of 3-5 degrees, after which they germinate after about 2 months. Unstratified will germinate for 1-3 years.

The distance between plants when planting is 0.6-2.5 m, the planting depth is 60-70 cm. When creating hedges, plants are planted at a distance of 50 cm. The root collar should be at ground level.

Yew tolerates pruning and shearing well, therefore it is often used to form curbs, green fences, figures. It is considered one of the best plants for creating topiary compositions. Due to its slow growth, it retains its shape for a long time. Yews are also used as a background for rock gardens. Thuja western, Japanese quince, juniper look spectacular with yew. It also looks beautiful as a tapeworm. There are many decorative yew forms with different colors of needles and crown shapes. All yews are poisonous. Bark, wood, needles, seeds contain a poisonous alkaloid. People who trim yew often complain of headaches and dizziness - this is how the volatile substances secreted by this plant affect the body. Consider this if there are small children in the yard. And the older the tree, the more toxic its poison.
