Moroccan watercress is a new mid-strip salad variety (Lactuca sativa) that has been gaining popularity since around 2010. Its other names are Catalan salad, zerbiatta, Canarian salad, Canary tongues (Laitue langue de Canari, Cressonnette marocaine, Radichetta). It is called tongues for the elongated leaves with deep slots.
The lettuce is very resistant to powdery mildew, but when there were a lot of snails in Europe in 2010, the crops suffered greatly. Its greens have a rather intense taste, the plant is high-yielding, with abundant green mass, stable and undemanding. It can be sown outdoors, and in greenhouses it gives early harvests. Moroccan watercress can be sown even on the balcony. It is sown in greenhouses from the end of January, and in open ground - from mid-March to early July. It is recommended to soak the seeds in water for several hours before sowing. 2-3 seeds are planted in the hole and covered with a layer of earth about twice as many seeds. The soil moisture is maintained until the seeds germinate.
The plant is quite beautiful and decorative. Even if this salad is collected in forks, the leaves will still not become tough. Moroccan watercress is popular not least for its long harvest time. As a mixed crop, it is recommended in combination with tomatoes, beans, onions, strawberries, cabbage and spinach. Moroccan watercress needs a sunny area and fertile soil, however, it is not recommended to fertilize it with manure. When watering, you need to pay attention so that the water gets under the plant. Lettuce should not be planted too deeply in the ground, otherwise it will rot.
Moroccan watercress leaves are low in calories, contain a lot of vitamin C, provitamin A, have antioxidant properties and reduce blood cholesterol. At the Green Week exhibition, it was shown to amateur gardeners as a new crop recommended for garden plots and greenhouses.
