If the sowing rate was overestimated, and this often happens when the seeds are small, as, for example, in carrots, beets, leeks, lettuce, radishes, parsley, turnips, then as the plants grow, they begin to shade each other, compete with each other for light, soil nutrition, water. Therefore, when two or four true leaves appear, hurry to thin out the seedlings. Lack of light, especially in the first weeks of growth, leads to stretching of plants, root crops form late or do not form root crops at all (for example, radishes), lettuce does not have a head of cabbage. In addition, pests and pathogens "attack" weakened plants. Let's look at the example of specific crops, how many times and at what distances should thinning be carried out.

Thinning is best done in the evening, at which time the plants are less injured. When thinning densely growing root crops, the roots of the remaining plants are exposed. They are sprinkled with soil, carefully leveled and watered from a watering can with a fine strainer. Thinning work is quite time-consuming, but it pays for itself, since as a result you will get large, healthy plants, and not "mouse tails", as is sometimes the case with inexperienced gardeners.

In most varieties of beets, several seedlings develop from each seed (glomerulus). At the first thinning, leave 2-3 cm between the plants in a row. When root crops with a diameter of about 1.5 cm are formed, thin the beets at a distance of 5-8 cm in a row. Plants removed during the first thinning can be planted on the sides of the beds occupied dill. While the seedlings take root and grow, onions and other early ripening vegetables will be ready for harvesting. In order to less injure the roots of the beets, they are planted in holes prepared in advance with a peg. Plants for transplanting should be no higher than 10-12 cm; from larger ones, ugly root crops are formed.
All root plants with a rounded root crop (radish, turnip, rutabaga, etc.) can be planted - they are not threatened with branching of the roots located in the lowest part of the future root crop.

Turnip and radish are thinned out once, leaving 4 cm between plants in a row. Rutabagas have larger leaves, so the plants in a row should be 10-12 cm apart from one another. Early varieties of radish plants give an optimal yield with a distance between them in row 4 -5 cm, late - 6-8 cm.
Plants with a long root vegetable (carrots, parsley, parsnips, etc.) cannot be planted, because the bulk of the root hairs in them are evenly distributed throughout the entire part of the future root vegetable and even the slightest damage to the root growth point leads to branching. As a result, the root crop is crooked, ugly, with intertwined roots.

Shoots carrots thinned out, leaving a first distance between plants in a series of 1-2 cm, and later - 4-5 cm roots remaining in the soil immediately sprinkled with soil, because the thinning of carrot plants produce essential oils that can attract the carrot fly.. She lays eggs on a naked root crop, the larvae penetrate it and gnaw out passages in it. As a result, young plants dry up, and if damaged at a later age, the roots become ugly and even wormy.
Parsley for a root crop is thinned, leaving a distance of 7-8 cm between the plants. If you only need parsley, then thinning can be carried out during the summer, using the plucked plants as fresh herbs to the table.
Parsnips are thinned out only in the late evening, as in the sun the plant releases substances that cause skin burns. It will be useful to wear gloves. Parsnips have large leaves, so the distance between plants should be 10-12 cm.
