It is very difficult to imagine an autumn garden without bright constellations of tiny stars of blooming sedum. As a rule, from the end of summer until the deepest autumn, bush forms of the stonecrop bloom. Often, due to lack of knowledge, they are all indiscriminately classified as varieties of a prominent stonecrop, but this is not entirely true. In fact, bush seducers have a fairly similar appearance and a similar flowering period, but belong to several different species. Let's find out which tall sedum plants bloom in the fall, how to distinguish them from each other and choose the right varieties.

Ochitnik prominent

Let's start with that very prominent sedum (Hylotelephium spectabile), whose name is on everyone's lips. Sometimes this name for the entire group of bushy sedum plants is used not only by inexperienced growers, but also by some nurseries.

The variety of the sedum plant is easily distinguished by its bluish foliage, which lacks purple shades

Most likely, this name stuck this way, because the appearance of all bush sedum plants is very similar. Their stems are erect, the leaves are large, the bushes are rather tall, and, unlike the creeping forms, they are clearly visible from afar. So it turns out that any tall sedum is "prominent".

Another reason why this name has become a household name lies in the fact that the stonecrop is the most common species, and it is often used in urban landscaping. That very tall sedum plant with green foliage and dirty pink corymbose inflorescences is just the same plant.

By origin, he comes from northern China, and now it is difficult to say whether this popular sedum is a natural form of the species or some kind of old variety. In any case, the variations of the eminent stonecrop are far from limited to this representative.

Currently, it is presented in many varieties, the main difference of which lies in the fact that they are devoid of purple tones. The color of their foliage is light green or bluish, and the inflorescences, as a rule, are colored in shades of pink or have a white or greenish-white color.

Stonecrop varieties prominent

Ochitnik prominent "Brilliant" is one of the most popular varieties of ochitnik prominent, which was created quite a long time ago. Back in 1993, he received the British Royal Horticultural Society Prize.

The height of this bush sedum is 45-60 centimeters, the leaves are large, fleshy, greenish-gray, at the beginning of autumn at the ends of the shoots umbrella-shaped inflorescences of pink-raspberry color bloom. As the bloom fades, the flowers of this stonecrop change color to rusty red, and after flowering they become coppery rusty.

The well-known "Iceberg" grows to a height of 30-40 centimeters. Leaves are light green with a bluish bloom. Flowering begins in late August. This variety is distinguished by bright white large inflorescences, which are additionally decorated with long stamens, making the umbrellas seem fluffy. The white color of the Iceberg sedum is not stable, and sometimes the bushes give out reversible shoots with pinkish flowers, which are recommended to be removed or left as a highlight of the variety.

The prominent "Neon" ochitnik forms vertical or slightly decaying bushes up to 30-40 centimeters in height. This variety is considered an improved variety of the 'Brilliant' sedum. Compared to the predecessor variety, the sedum "Neon" is lower and more compact, its flowers are brighter in color, and the inflorescences are much larger and more rounded.

Otnik ordinary

Other names for the common sedum (Hylotelephium telephium) are squeaky, hare cabbage, and purpurea. As you might guess, the last name indicates the external features of the plant, and, indeed, the common stonecrop from the common stonecrop is mainly distinguished by the presence of a significant amount of purple (up to almost black) shades in the color of leaves and stems.

The color palette of the common stonecrop inflorescences is very wide and varies from cream to deep crimson-red, sometimes varieties with yellow or orange flowers are also found.

This species of sedum grows in the wild on the territory of Russia, in particular in the Far East. It has found application in traditional medicine.

Common sedum varieties

Ochitnik ordinary "Matrona" (Matrona) - one of the most noticeable varieties of sedum, which is distinguished by stately tall bushes up to 70 centimeters in height. At the end of summer, large heads of pale pink inflorescences bloom on ruby stems. The foliage of this sedum plant is large and has a bluish-green color with a purple tint and veins. It is valued for its majestic appearance and large (up to 15 centimeters) inflorescences.

Ochitnik ordinary "Diamond Edge" is a unique bush sedum with variegated foliage (which is not typical for this species). The main feature of the variety is the presence of a thin creamy border along the edge of a large gray leaf. This cultivar was bred on the basis of the Matrona variety and has a flower color and habit similar to it, but it is slightly lower - 40 centimeters.

The common ochiner "Xenox yellow" (Yellow Xenox) is a variety of one of the darkest-colored representatives of the species - the "Xenox" sedum. The main difference is the chameleon flowers, which, as they bloom, change color from pink to pale yellow. Such a rare color of the flower is especially effective against the background of dark purple, almost black leaves. Height 35-40 centimeters.

White-pink litter

All the most variegated variegated varieties belong precisely to the white-pink sedum (Hylotelephium erythrostictum). They are very easy to distinguish by the presence of a wide border of white or golden flowers along the edge of the leaf blade, or the snow-white or yellowish center of the leaf, trimmed with a light green border.

Some varieties of sedum plant have a white-pink border or the middle also has a pale pink color, which changes to white with age. Unlike sedum and purple, the sedum plant has thinner stems and looks more delicate and elegant. The foliage of the white-pink sedum is also slightly smaller in size and has a noticeably jagged edge, and is also often slightly wavy. The flowering of white-pink sedum is often earlier than that of other bush sedum species.

White-pink sedum varieties

White-pink frost maker " Frosty Morn". Variety with a bright wide white edging and cream markings on light green leaves, with very showy flowers. In the budding phase, the flowers are greenish-white, and during blooming, they change from pure white to light pink. Due to this color, the plants seem to be covered with frost. Their height is up to 60 centimeters.

White-pink ochiner "Mediovariegatum". Probably the brightest and most festive sedum in the garden, which retains a similar color throughout the season. The main feature of this cultivar is a very bright golden-cream center of the leaf, shaded with an emerald edge. The leaf blade is slightly wavy. The flowers are pale pink, flowering begins in late summer. The height of the bush is from 30 to 40 centimeters.

White-pink "Pinky" ochiner. A very original variety that is hard to resist. Its unique foliage changes color throughout the season. As soon as the snow melts, young shoots of a pale pink color appear from the ground, similar to tiny heads of ornamental cabbage. Later, as the foliage grows, it first turns white, and then turns green, but the young leaves on the tops of the shoots remain for some time with pink and cream shades.

By the time the buds are formed, the bright color completely disappears. This variety is one of the earliest among bush sedum, it blooms at the end of July, flowers are bright pink. Height 30 centimeters.

Features of growing bush sedum

Shrub seducers grow easily on dry to medium, well-drained soils, in full sun, but they can also withstand light partial shade. Plants tolerate drought and heat, but they need more frequent watering than the creeping sedum species.

One of the main conditions for successful cultivation is good soil drainage. Plants thrive best on sandy or rocky soils with moderate fertility.

Ochitniks grown in overly rich soils or in shade produce weak shoots that will constantly tend to the ground. Some seducers are also prone to bush falling apart even when grown in full sun. In this case, tying the stems into bunches will help as soon as they grow in mid-spring.

You can grow bush sedum from seed, but a quicker and easier way is to split the bushes in the fall or early spring as new shoots emerge from the ground. To stimulate the best growth of the stonecrop, divide the bushes every three years.

The use of bush sedum in garden design

Shrub seducers are excellent companions for ornamental grasses that bloom in the fall, so it is very difficult to imagine a modern mixborder without the use of bush seducer species of various varieties.

Even when other perennials take a break or complete flowering, the bright stonecrop, thanks to its colorful foliage, always remains a stable color spot in the flower garden.

Cleansing plants are also good in combination with roses, which have a second wave of flowering in late summer. The ochitnik and its brethren work equally well both in a perennial flower garden and as accents among evergreens or planted in a bunch of containers.

Often there are whole beds of sedum plants along the paths. Thanks to the rich variety of foliage shades, you can create interesting shading by planting varieties from the darkest to the lightest.
