Mint (lat. Mentha) is a genus of plants in the Lamiaceae family. All species are highly aromatic, most of them contain a lot of menthol. Plants of the Mint genus differ significantly in the chemical composition of volatile substances - metabolites, the so-called LAV, which are formed during the metabolism, which manifests itself in a different smell and in a different composition of essential oils. The name of the genus comes from the name of the nymph Minfa (or Minta), the goddess of Mount Mente in Elis, the beloved of the god of the underworld, Hades (Hades). Hades' wife Persephone turned her into a plant - a fragrant mint.

Varieties

The most popular is "peppermint" (Mentha piperita). It grows up to 1.2-1.3 m in height. Elongated leaves with a serrated edge sit on a pubescent stem. Inflorescences are located at the ends of the shoots. The flowers are usually four-petalled pink or lilac in color. Numerous garden forms have been bred. Here's another description of several varieties of mint.

Water mint (Mentha aquatica) can often be found along river banks in natural conditions. The color of the peduncle and leaves has a purple tint. They give off an unpleasant odor.

The stem of green mint (Mentha viridis) is smooth. Leaves are oblong, oval, pointed, with a jagged edge. Purple flowers are collected in loose spike-shaped inflorescences.

Round-leaved mint (Mentha rowndifolia) - a plant 30 cm high. Ovate fluffy leaves of light green color. Small flowers are white or light purple. The plant has a strong aroma and is widely used in cooking.

Spikelet (Mentha spicata) grows up to 70-80 cm in height. Leaves ovate-lanceolate sessile (attached directly to the branch). Pinkish flowers are collected in an inflorescence, in which flowers and leaves alternate. Peduncles are reddish.
